Politico posted a tweet that said "Bernie Sanders might still be cheap, but he's sure not poor" and a link to their article about Bernie Sanders' wealth. They later deleted the tweet and posted an apology.

Original tweet:

If you paste the twitter url into google you can still view the google cache version.

The new tweet and the apology:

Bernie Sanders has three homes and a net worth approaching at least $2 million.
In a strict, bottom-line sense, he has become one of those rich people against whom he has so unrelentingly railed.

For the record: This replaces a deleted tweet that needed more context. Our apologies.

They have not changed any of the images.

Some background on the use of $100 bills aka Benjamins as political commentary from February.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...-tweets/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.7c0840eff5c2
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the entire Democratic leadership on Monday condemned Rep. Ilhan Omar for suggesting that Israel's allies in American politics were motivated by money rather than principle, an extraordinary rebuke of a House freshman in the vanguard of the party's left flank.

The Minnesota congresswoman's Sunday evening tweet — "It's all about the Benjamins baby," a reference to $100 bills — drew immediate denunciations from Republicans and fellow Democrats, especially Jewish members of Congress. Within hours, Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the leadership issued a joint statement calling Omar's "use of anti-Semitic tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel's supporters" deeply offensive and insisted on an apology.

Some context for those who do not know who Bernie Sanders is

Transcript from Youtube video
I learned a great deal about immigration as a child because my father came from Poland at the age of 17 without a nickel in his pocket, without knowing one word of English. He came to the United States to escape the crushing poverty that existed in his community and to escape widespread antisemitism and it was a good thing that he came to this country because virtually his entire family was wiped out by Hitler and Nazi barbarism.

This is part of a larger trend of antisemitic incidents that have increased in frequency since the 2016 election.

The jump from 2016 to 2017 was, per the ADL, the largest single-year increase in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in its 40 years of collecting data. The report doesn't break down incidents by ideology of the perpetrator, but a separate ADL research paper found that 49 of the 50 extremist murders in 2018 were committed by far-right extremists (rather than, for example, far-leftists or jihadists).

It also so happens that the surge in anti-Semitism began as Trump's fortunes rose politically — and it's very hard not to conclude that there's at least some connection there. This is certainly the sense of what's happening in the Jewish community: A staggering 81 percent of American Jews describe themselves as becoming "more concerned" about anti-Semitism in the US since Trump took office, per a 2018 GBA Strategy poll conducted for the left-leaning Jewish group J Street.

Can ⁦@politico⁩ explain to us how photoshopping money trees next to the only Jewish candidate for president and talking about how "cheap" and rich he is *isn't* antisemitic?

Or are they just letting this happen because he's a progressive politician they don't like?

What are they doing over at Politico? I thought they were a serious newspaper. They need to issue a proper apology and denounce this garbage. Are the mainstream media going to turn into Breitbart because a jewish candidate is running for president?

You have some form of wealth, therefore you cannot criticize the capitalist systems that create inequality.

I honestly don't believe the writer at Politico thought this far.
I assume they simply connect Bernie with being rich to "discredit" his attacks on the wealthy and progressivism in general.

Oh he advocates for equality but is himself RICH!! etc...

Can someone explain to me what "anti-semitic" means? I mean, I thought I knew, but as of late it seems that the definition has become extremely loose.

Name a politician in America who isn't rich? Why single out Bernie just because his message/policies might target other rich people/be based on socialism and things like tax brackets which increase as you get richer? Nationalised healthcare, free education, etc, etc. No shit taxes pay for all of that. Bernie's rich... okay... but he still supports those things?

Are we going to get one of these articles done for every other Democrat candidate that is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars/millions if not have multiple homes/businesses?

It's not a good look to target the Jewish guy and play on rich/greedy tropes. Made even funnier when it's one of the few Democrat candidates who even slightly resembles socialist policies for America.

Similar to the critique that he levied against Hillary, focusing on getting paid for speeches by bankers instead of criticizing her policies on financial industry regulations.

The issue is the fact that omar said shit that was less than or at most on par with this stuff and people jumped down her throat for it. The point of raising issue here is to show the hypocrisy of it all. Maybe the outrage at omar was driven by something other than sensitivity to antisemitism?

Calling him "cheap" (what's that supposed to mean here?) seems like it could be a dogwhistle, but I'm a little confused about how the imagery is antisemitic. Is it just because it's him with money?

I mean, would you say a picture of Obama with a bunch of fried chicken and watermelons is racist?

Yes, but you can talk about a politician's wealth and how they earned their money in the context of their politics. Bernie Sanders talks about wealth. We talk about Trump's wealth all the time and even ask for more information on it. I don't think fried chicken and watermelon is particularly relevant to Obama and his policies, so there would be no reason to put him next to those things unless you're trying to use the racial image.

What does AIPAC have to do with this? Do you believe every jewish person is somehow beholden to that organization? Hell AIPAC attacks Bernie

But keep handwaving antisemitism away for your political convenience

They're saying AIPAC won't defend Sanders because their previous attacks weren't in good faith.

Maybe actually read posts instead of instantly going for the fight like your first post wanted.

They're targeting Bernie precisely because he's basically the only one who's really going after the wealthy so much.
Wall Street is scared shitless of him and to a smaller extent Warren
http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/04/wall-street-democrats-2020-candidates.html

There's tremendous fear," said one banker who was there

Nearly everyone else in the field, the financiers felt, was being pulled leftward by Bernie Sanders (the preposterously well-funded contender they considered too crazy to even imagine in the White House) and Elizabeth Warren

so much fear that such investors often speak of the U.S. senator from Massachusetts, a former law professor and consumer advocate, as a co-front-runner with Sanders. "How do we come up with an alternative?" asked one person at the dinner

few believe that, aside from Sanders or Warren, any contenders are likely to make an aggressive new push for regulation as president

"They're too far left! They're too far left!" said Alex Sanchez, CEO of the Florida Bankers Association. "I mean, honestly, if it's Bernie versus Trump, I have no fucking idea what I'm going to do," one Democratic hedge funder told me. "Maybe I won't vote."

A lot of the donor community is worried about losing their presidential perks and ambassadorial gigs to baristas,"

So when the rich are scared they will of course focus their attacks and try to discredit anyone who might threaten the status quo.

And that sums up how disgusting America is when it comes to money and being a 1st world country.

Still, it shouldn't be a revolutionary concept to people that rich people can simultaneously be rich and still be for lots of policies and protections that actually help everyone around them.

Of course you can talk about his wealth (though really I don't see the point, he's barely above middle class, this article is clearly a hit job) but if you're gonna do it you don't need to use imagery or terms that reflect racist tropes to get the point across.

Right? This is a stupid fucking article, having over a million dollars net worth at age 70 is not that rich, especially for a lifelong politician, but is every time a Jewish person and a dollar bill in the same picture going to be anti-semitic now?

This is significantly lighter than what Omar got in trouble for, and that was bullshit too. Can we not play alt-right games?
