All in all, my amusement is slowly turning into disgust at what is essentially revenge porn by who is most likely a Republican.

This is one of the key reasons why the GOP march in lock step. The moment you step out of line, you get a bayonet in the back. Only a few of them, like Romney and McCain, get away with occasional dissent.

It's also because it's easy behavior to make an example of. It assumes, correctly, that people are going to fall back, and quite smoothly, on other biases.
There are so many ways in which we see that Republicans are racists, liars, charlatans, hypocrites and adulterers. And not only Republicans, but even a lot of people on the left, will handwave it under the pretense "Yeah yeah Republicans are bad everybody knows this whatever."
So it's been interesting to watch this unfold. Because it's not just a matter of a Republican being hammered down for stepping out of line. It's how they stepped out of line. Cawthorne's behavior is salacious. That makes it a story. Would it have happened to someone who's less a piece a shit, it might have stirred a conversation about why this behavior is seen as particularly salacious.
I was talking to my wife about this on the way to work and I told her that it is shit like this--the understanding that powerful people can and will find dirt on you if they don't like you--that would make me to never want to run for public office.
And I don't even lead or have led a salacious life by any means. But to have my private life exposed to such a degree because I didn't fall in-line with the elites or I became a liability in some way would scare the shit out of me.

i don't think this specific sort of smear campaign happens every day. like before the video, yeah, that seems pretty standard, but the release of the video is a massive escalation (especially coming from your own party)
These smears normally don't happen to this extent because I doubt many candidates are this careless with their behaviors prior to running for office. Escalation only occurred because this stuff was available.
Cawthorn jumped into politics without any forethought. He can't claim he was young because he still is at, what, 25? Maybe if he had waited another decade and built a decades worth of foundation doing grassroot stuff or running for local offices then, A) he'd have learned to keep his mouth shut, B) could obfuscate all the smears by pointing to his actions as a politician. Problem is he's a rookie with absurdly unrealistic ambition, a loud mouth, and no accomplishments to fall back on.
