This shit is so depressing, when the only viable opposition party doesn't even have your back on the bare minimum, what do you even do? Obviously push for things outside of electoralism too but man. Reminder that this problem did not start under Trump and will not end under Trump.

Some of the bills that are likely to be shot down

The Deadly Force Accountability Act (Assembly Bill 1506). This bill by Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, would allow local law enforcement leaders and district attorneys to request that the California state attorney general investigate police shootings. But despite the fact that the bill enjoys support from a large coalition of groups, including the NAACP and the California Police Chiefs Association, it has had one very powerful opponent: California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, a Democrat who has repeatedly made it clear that he's no friend of police reform.

Police Decertification (Senate Bill 731). This crucial bill by Steve Bradford, D-Gardena, would allow California to decertify police officers who break the law or engage in serious misconduct. Forty-five states already have the power to do this, but not "progressive" California, where dangerous or criminal officers can simply take their badge and gun and move to another police force. "Criminal Cops," an investigation conducted by a consortium of California media outlets including McClatchy, highlighted the problem last year.

Police record transparency (SB 776). This bill by state Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, would increase AB 1185 for law enforcement. It would require departments and agencies to turn over records related to officers accused of racist or discriminatory behavior or who have been repeatedly accused of violating rules to conduct searches or arrests. It would expand on Skinner's previous bill, SB 1421, which required law enforcement agencies to release records involving shootings and other uses of deadly force. Police groups fought SB 1421 tooth and nail, and some law enforcement leaders refused to comply with the law after it passed, including Attorney General Becerra.

Vote these fuckers out. Can't believe any "democrat" would actually oppose any of this. Maybe enough of the city wasn't burned down.

This opinion article seems to only name AG Becerra as opposition explicitly...does anyone have anything that explains his opposition (aside from any obvious "he's an AG/cop" type stuff)? Legitimately interested if there's some sort of legislative reason he'd oppose this, or if it's literally straight "fuck this, lol" here.

This is why anyone telling you to

"Vote"

is feeding a line.

You have to get the right people, because entrenched Democrats are a major reason we are where we are right now in this country.

People who pay lip service and actively undermine real reforms.

You have to protest these people just as fervently as you protest Donald Trump because they too are the enemy of progress even if they have a "D" next to their name.

Remember, if they're above you in the current system, they're probably your enemy.

Not being from California, I also found the article lacking. Outside of the AG, the only dems named are the ones that authored those bills that are under fire

Again I ask, if "liberal-bastion" California can't pass any watered down police reform, why in the hell should protestors listen to folks advocating to vote when a burned building gets change faster.
It may only be that AG, but why haven't the Dems statewide gotten ahead of this? BLM has existed for 8 years. This renewed energy has been since May, and it is now August. Will it take another Black person per city to get change?

Article: "Let's hold them accountable"
Also article: *almost no information about who's holding up these bills*

Thanks, Sac Bee.

The article didn't detail what happened with any of these. Have they actually been voted down/blocked by the legislature? Or is this too premature?

It's not only the AG. Dems in the legislature are against it too, just don't know the names of them.

Remember this story the next time some online lib tries to shame you for not voting Dem and being cynical about electoralism.

From the second article you posted it seems many are trying to kill the bills before they even go to a vote.

Also it's interesting (in a bad way) to see how a so-called progressive state is one of the most regressive when it comes to police accountability and reform.

I wish I had a better source, both that one and the other don't actually name any opposition besides the AG and a random attorney. If someone finds a better article that would be great

It's going to be voted on in the legislature according to the 2nd article. But had a tough time getting to that point. Apparently. Idk the details are lacking for sure.

I'm sure Democrats will tweet "Vote Blue No matter who" as a way to give George Floyd and many other justice.

Moved to LA from Atlanta in 2006. This city is the most segregated place I've ever seen. A lot of rich white people who are "fine with gay marriage" but depend on cops to keep the status quo going.

Remember that these liberals are in fact as much of a disease to reason and compassion as the conservatives. The difference is one is more blatant and extreme, but both, fundamentally, have objections to a genuinely fair and reasonable society.

This is literal #BothSides.

California reelected Diane Feinstein, they'll elect Xavier Becerra to the Senate as well to replace Harris. As the so-called leading progressive state they don't inspire much confidence.

People always think I'm playing but we're seeing now isn't "civil unrest". It's a precursor to the real shit that will happen if politicians keep playing these games for money and power. Heads on pikes, shit will get pretty awful so long as they let tensions continue to rise.

Primary these idiots at the earliest opportunity. If they don't reform the police, reform their careers.
