they show the speed sometimes too, like it's a video game but I am pretty sure what you're talking about is mile markers

He left LA county 45 minutes ago. They're in Orange County now.
It's the entertainment capital of the world. Might as well put on a good show before they take you in.
I can't help but laugh when they all stop, get out of their cars and then the guy drives off while they're standing in the street.
I was cruising about a quarter mile behind this scene from Culver City all the way down to Westminster. I'm glad the cops didn't decide to make their move before I hit my exit.
Ahh right. I wonder how long they will stay on him though. iirc once they get far enough the LA news choppers likely wont stay on it

Why haven't the police just gotten in front of him to deploy caltrops, an oil slick, or possibly a smoke screen?

The only thing that really stops news chopper coverage is fuel.
Nice to see that TV personality training kick-in with the constant need to form a narrative.

They'd probably work out a thing with a San Diego affiliate to continue coverage if fuel becomes an issue.
Everybody knows to escape a car chase in LA you just gotta drive into a Staples Center parking lot right as a Clippers game ends.

That one time where he was stopped and they all get out and he just drives off is just something
Could be a real human bean though, we haven't seen him clearly enough.
