Pokkén Tournament DX
Publisher:
Nintendo
Developer: Bandai Namco
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release Date: September 22, 2017 (Worldwide)

BlA8Gkq.jpg

Phases

Each match has two phases, Field Phase and Duel Phase, which are triggered with certain attacks - for example, landing a physical attack combo in Field Phase will cause a shift to Duel Phase, and landing a number of combos in Duel Phase will shift the match back to Field Phase. Field Phase has full 3D movement and is more projectile/zoning based, whereas Duel Phase is on a 2D plane and is more focused on close range physical action.

Combat Basics

There are three types of attacks : strikes, throws, and counters. Strikes (aka regular attacks) beat throws, throws beat counters, counters beat strikes. Yes, it's literally rock paper scissors, so it's pretty easy to pick up.

There are four base attack buttons: Light attack, Heavy attack, Special attack, and jump. Press Light and jump together to throw, and heavy and special together to counter. Hold the R button to block.

Unique attacks can be done by pressing a direction along with a button, similar to Smash Bros.

Synergy

Taking damage, landing hits, and triggering phase shifts builds your synergy gauge, which you can then activate by pressing L and R at the same time to cause a Synergy Burst. Press L and R again while in Synergy Burst mode to use your character's super. Supers are incredibly damaging but also easy to block, so use them wisely.

Pokemon Types

The playable Pokémon are split into four types, Standard, Power, Speed, and Technique. Standard Pokémon, like Lucario and Pikachu, are beginner friendly and easy to pick up. Technique Pokémon, like Darkrai and Gengar, are considerably more complicated and require a lot of practice. Power Pokémon are slow and strong, while Speed Pokémon are fast but weak.

Support

At character selection, you can pick a pair of pokemon to bring in as support. You can pick which of the support Pokémon you want to use at the start of a round. Unlike synergy, supports are entirely time-limited (attacking/taking damage doesn't affect cooldown), and different types have a different charge time. Once the support meter is full, you can press the L button to call for support. Different supports have different properties, some of which are offensive, defensive, or even heal HP.

Ferrum League: This is the game's story mode. You compete in a series of tournaments to become Ferrum League champion while trying to solve the mystery of Shadow Mewtwo. It's pretty lengthy, but also very grindy.

Single Battle: Fight an AI opponent in a single match.

Local Battle: Compete locally in regular or team battles.

Practice: Learn the basics of the game and practice combos.

My Town: Customize your trainer (seen in the loading screens and between rounds) by buying clothes with currency you earn from battles. This is also where you change game settings, like Nia's voice/frequency.

Online: Compete in player or ranked matches online.

~~New to DX~~

Daily challenges: Nia will supply you with a challenge to complete each day with certain Pokémon or team. Complete it to get bonus skill points.

Team battles: Instead of having one Pokémon for a best of 3 match, you can now play in a format closer to the Pokémon RPGs: You choose three Pokémon to use, each of which come out one at a time, and play until either all of your Pokémon or all of the opponents Pokémon have fainted. You can play team battles locally.

Online groups: You can create or join groups of up to 100 players of a similar skill level to play against.

So, does this game play like Tekken?

Yes and no. Each fight shifts between two phases, the field phase and the duel phase. The field phase is ranged combat in full 3D, similar to the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games. The duel phase is on a 2D plane and is closer to Tekken. Certain combos and attacks will shift the gameplay from field phase to duel phase and vice versa.

Is this the same game as the Wii U version?

It's an enhanced port, meaning it's the same base game with a considerable amount of new content. This includes five new characters (four from the Japanese arcade version, one that's brand new), one new support duo, and a couple new modes like team battle and daily challenge. It also has a number of balance changes that never made it to the Wii U version.

Wait, weren't the new characters found in the code of the Wii U version?

Yeah, but they were never released. Probably so that they could focus on this version instead.

Do I still need to unlock Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo like in the Wii U version?

No. Unlike the Wii U version, all characters/supports are unlocked from the get go.

Will there be additional DLC?

I would say probably not, since Pokkén is already a two year old game, but who knows?

Should I get the Pokkén Pro Controller?

It's a great controller for 2d games, but I wouldn't get it just for this game. Pokken plays super well on the Switch pro controller and honestly it feels better to play with an analog stick in Field Phase. Having said that, I personally think it's well worth the $25 MSRP.

Nia's voice is the worst! Can I turn it off?

Yes, it is, and yes, you can. You can change Nia's VA to Japanese or turn it off entirely.

Does this game look better than the Wii U version? What resolution does it run at?

Yes, but not by much. The game runs at 1280x720 at 60fps in both docked and portable modes. In contrast the Wii U version ran at 960x720. The game appears to have the same textures as the Wii U version as opposed to the higher quality arcade textures.

How does local versus work? Is it the same as in Wii U?

No, this is a significant change in DX. Versus mode can now run on a single screen at 60fps. You can also do split screen, but it's 30fps and looks ugly as sin. You can also play wirelessly between two Switch systems .

Does this game support single joycons? What about the Wii U Pokkén Controller?

Yes and yes!

The Wii U version had a LAN mode for local tournaments. Does this version have it too?

Yes, but the code to activate it on the main menu is different, it's Down + B + L + R. It looks like LAN play is limited to single Pokémon battles for the time being.

Why isn't Hawlucha in this game tho?????

¯_(ツ)_/¯

NOTE: This is my first time doing an OT this extensive, and it ended up being a way bigger endeavor than I anticipated, so I apologize if this OT comes off as sloppy or unpolished. I know there's a couple things I need to fix, but I'm at work ATM so I'll fix it when I'm home. Like other OTs, this is a living document that will continue to be updated. If people have suggestions, feel free to shoot them my way.

So I played the demo last night with a bud a few times. It's a cool game. Is the community still lively? Thinking about picking it up, but might just wait a bit and ask for it as a Christmas gift or something.

I hope we get some DLC characters. Though I imagine the arcade version would get them first.

The patch, which is live now, added the expected elements and some smaller things. Losses are by default not shown (at least for friendlies?) which will hopefully encourage more experimentation and less rage quitting.

The replay feature works great, and the 3v3 mode is quite unique.

The password isn't working for me in the latest version of the game, seems like it is two characters too short. Am I missing something?

I just checked, and it is still 8 characters. The one listed is correct. You're sure it's not working?

Anyway, that room is something me and 2 other members use to practice together. It really doesn't work unless you have each other added as Switch friends or "schedule" outside Switch -- I've used PMs on here as well as a Discord lvl 99 Pixel set up. So far, we're all in separate continents with wildly different time zones, which is a shame. No lag on my end, though. Still active too, practiced a bit with RomanceDawn today and yesterday. It'd be cool if you joined us!

On the US version it won't allow me to press OK until I enter 10 characters, the character counter shows '8/10' for me after entering the password.

Lol, I went to edit the password and sure enough it needs 10 from me as well. New minimum apparently. I've added "00" at the end. Bigg, read this pls :>
I was going to close the discord thing since its never used. A shame because 3v3 battles are fun.
That's only because your AM is my PM, so we have like zero window. I'm into it. But if you do close it, we've still got this thread and PMs.

Where is everyone else, tho? Practicing with fellow members is great.

Wow, this poor OT didn't last long. Hopefully, it's rejuvenated for a bit thanks to the free trial. I'll be checking that out tomorrow, myself.

Yeah its a shame it didnt last that long, so much so that even I didnt notice it being around much even during the time of launch, hopefully this trail period helps it reinvograte interest even for a short while, it would be great to have some matches or provide advice to new players as well as some small tidbits of info on occasion too!

One example of a small tidbit is that, while in Duel Phase, if Charizard is in High Stance (holding Up on the dpad), he is immune to grabs - does not matter if it is ranged or close up grabs, either. He does not care.

In general, most characters' High and Low Stances often have small effects and details like this. some helping with synergy meter gain, parrying/immunity to certain types of moves, support meter gain etc, all depending on the fighter chosen.

Though if you want one that is a nice little nod to the main series, Garchomp's High Stance is basically his 'Rough Skin' ability. even down to it damaging opponents who are close up! Do note that this does not stop Garchomp taking damage from the attacks, and it does not work on most attacks, mainly some weaker ones and some projectiles, in order to keep it fair.

Thanks for the niche tips above. I really love the game's systems. It's cool as shit. This is like what I always wished Tekken was.

I wish I could get good at Tekken, I struggle with its controls admittedly, which is why I was so glad I could jive so well with Pokken's overall game feel, it surprised me in a good way, and it doesnt lose Highs/Mids/Lows either due to how the moves function in the game - its not like its been made shallower but instead its been carefully streamlined but still with plenty of depth to explore, Pokken is probably my favourite fighter just to play and watch matches of.

Its combo system can be a bit weird as for most combos there is a soft 21 hit limit, or certain moves used during duel phase stacks onto an invisible counter that will eventually force a phase shift anyway, though I probably wont be the best at explaining this little mechanic - this video does a better job than I ever could, its one of the few things the ingame tutorial never tells you about weirdly enough.

Haven't watched the vid yet, but I feel as though I'm already getting a pretty good grasp on these invisible rules, particularly phases shift changes. I can tell when I wail on someone which attack is gonna cut me off. Most FGs have stuff like that in it so maybe it's just that sense.

The setup to fight a friend seems to be UNBELIEVABLY stupid. Like the best way we can figure is making a group, and even then it seems like if we don't make selections within 10 seconds we don't get matched with each other and get matched with a CPU. What the fuck. No matter how good the game is, especially with a fighting game, that's un fucking acceptable.

UPDATE ON MY GOD DAMN SELF : I realize now the matches with CPUs are just to get you to the real matches, but it's amazing how poorly it's communicated.

Using 'Friendly Matches' and setting up a specific code for both players is a good way for quick matches, furthermore the game will still matchmake even during the AI/CPU fight. its usually pretty quick at finding an opponent/friend to fight though.

EDIT: Apologies, I didnt see you'd already worked that out, sorry! I'll make up for it with another tidbit regarding another fighter then :P

Scizor's High Stance can parry a very small number of moves, usually only about 0-2 moves per character.. yes there's some fighters he cannot parry at all, its a really strange selection of moves he is immune against. One of which his High Stance parry can shield him from is Decidueye's Charged Y, which is a projectile arrow barrage, as demonstrated here:

HOWEVER... in this particular instance, Scizor has a better option to deal with Decidueye's Charge Y projectile, his forward dash when held turns into a hover dash that the community have termed "grazing" since he can graze past projectiles (think near missing projectiles in a bullet hell shoot em up) and he can use this hover dash to graze past most projectiles, not all however, (if i recall laser type projectiles are out of the question, those will hit regardless) so do be careful!

More weird interesting tips above, thanks! I'm thinking of picking up Scizor so it's nice to know. Right now Machamp is my dude for sure, with Pika being backup but I'm not that good with him.

So Blastoise is my favorite Pokémon ever. I'm nearly sure I'm gonna be buying this game and the DLC with it, but I hear he's like fucking terrible? Is he THAT bad? Like if I buy him I'm still gonna use him fuck it, I love him. But just wanna know if I'm basically cutting off both of my arms by playing him.

Blastoise is often considered the worst, HOWEVER the worst in this game is still 'mid tier' - there are no real low tiers in Pokken since the cast is really well balanced all-round, his frame data is among the slowest of the cast but he does have some good albeit committal moves in his toolkit! and he can last a while due to having the highest HP pool in the game shared with Machamp and Garchomp at 660HP

That's a real shame, because not only is he my favorite Pokémon, but from what I've seen on him in this game it seems like he would be perfect for my playstyle too. Long range lockdown setups into close range heavy attacks.

But it sounds like he's still viable at least. I guess it's similar to the problem UMvC3 has with so many characters. Like why pick someone like Jill when Wolverine does what she does with less work? So if that's the case, I can hopefully make him work.

Yeah, people have definitely made Blastoise work, same with another fellow water starter in Empoleon, who is also consdered 'mid tier' but both these characters are definitely viable in some form. Infact two people used Blastoise in the Pokken DX Online Invitational last month (timestamped a later match) that though he didnt win the invitational, put up a damn good showing of the character! Furthermore to expand on the EMpoleon mention, the person who won the 2018 Pokken championships has used Empoleon a few times too to great effect, so dont let the fact that these two characters' percieved 'mid/low tier-ness' should stop you from playing who you like to play as! (I mean i've been playing mostly low tiers in Smash for most of my time and I dont care, I just enjoy using those fighters)

I'd be glad to do some matches sometime if anyone wants to as well, though the old Resetera ingame group has since disappeared, maybe a new one should be made?

I ended up getting it yesterday along with the DLC, and I fucking LOVE HIM. Played him for a good few hours yesterday. He's so fun to play. Still have a lot to learn but I can tell he's gonna be extremely rewarding.

And yeah those matches in those vids are really inspiring. Mewtater seems like a beast

yeah, Mewtater's been in the Pokken community for a long time, and while he does consider Blastoise to be the lowest of the 23 fighters, the fact that he can demonstrate how good Blastoise can be with careful move usage and techniques shows how every fighter can play well in this game in one way or another.

Glad to hear you got the game though! I've been trying to learn a few characters myself since i was PRETTY MUCH a Solo Garchomp main for the entirety of the WiiU versions' life since day 2, i've been trying to get better with Suicune but i've been really enjoying Chandelure lately myself haha, getting those debuffs and then using the ranged grab for stupid high damage numbers is hilariously satisfying, even if it can feel a bit mean sometimes, man this poor Pikachu didnt know what hit him
/spoiler]

Also, in the GIF above during the Field Phase portion - Chandelure's Charge X move is a sort of little 'dance/pose' that not only shortens Chandelure's own debuff timers, but it also extends debuff timers on opponents. It is also immune to all Low attacks, so for example the Yveltal assist move flat out doesnt work, However Chandelure is still very vulnerable while using this move as she cannot do any move cancel out of it.

I've been playing the free-trial and made it to D5 ranking today!

...As soon as I got to D5 I was match-maked to a B3 player with...let's see...1,860 wins in ranked mode.
OR: 8,953 matches total between ranked and friendlies. I did not win. I did at least manage to put up some fight; 2nd round I managed to get his Garchomp to 45 HP.

The game docked me ranking points anyways. Stupid game.

There were some incredible matches earlier tonight in the Top 8 Finals of the Pokken DX side of the Pokemon Players Cup just now! some really fantastic pokken action with a good variety of characters and high level play all round, definitely a great watch!

I've been thinking about getting into this game. Is the online community still active? Would I be able to find matches whenever?

Also, I live in Japan so I'm wondering if the that would be a help or hindrance to my finding matches.

Yeah im still able to find matches pretty quickly, there is definitely still a good online presence for the game still remarkably well.

Apologies for the mega-bump, but I just picked this game up earlier today and wanted to chime in to say that it's pretty fun. I've never been much of a fighting game fan (the most I really enjoy is Smash and Soulcalibur), but I really like the phase shift system here. It seems like that's where most of the depth comes from (as opposed to memorizing dozens of combo inputs), and as someone who normally sucks at these games, I think I can kind of wrap my head around it and hopefully get good at the game. That said, I made the mistake of going online for a couple of matches, and uh… definitely not ready for multiplayer yet lol.

I don't suppose there's any hope for a future to this sub-series, is there? I know Harada said last year that he'd like to make a new one if TPC would allow it, but have there been any indications that it might actually happen?

EDIT: Also, this is a really nice-looking game. I love the aesthetic they went for.

Oh not a problem, glad to see you like the game! its a personal favourite of mine too, heck there's still a dedicated community that still hosts events and stuff too.

and i also like the phase-shift system this game has a battle mechanic, as it allows the neutral to be reset and give players a chance to 'reset' in a way to get their bearings, it gives the game a lovely flow to proceedings :)

As for a potential future.. they'd arguably be dumb not to.. the WiiU version alone sold 1mil+ and combined sales were pretty decent all-round, but with the SoulCalibur director now heading Pokemon Unite, and Harada hoping they let him make a new Pokken, its a little uncertain though, (however the Pokken team did later make New Pokemon Snap so, they are still a 'team' so to speak)

Fingers crossed that they do end up being able to make a sequel. I think there's a lot of potential here.

Just finished the Green League in the story mode and having a great time! Only been playing as Suicune, so I'll have to try some others soon. Maybe Blaziken'll be my next one, I watched a few videos of Max Dood playing as it and it looked fun.

Ah fair enough :) and good luck through the rest of the leagues! i went through the campaign as Empoleon, in an attempt to get used to how they play, couldnt quiiite do it in the end and fell back to my WiiU main, Garchomp, though I have since gone out and experimented with Chandelure and Suicune myself. and yeah Max Dood's videos of the WiiU version was great, if anything im surprised he hasnt done a rate the super on it yet :P

I really enjoyed the basic mechanics of this game and got pretty into it for a bit there. Would absolutely love a sequel with a little bit more of everything. I feel like a new Pokken could go a long way with a story mode that had an overworld or more RPG mechanics.
