I never expected the game to get bad reviews.

Wait like an hour or so for everything to stabilize. It could easily go up.
There are caves, but they're not dungeons. They're linear paths through a cave environment.
That comment about handholding is interesting, the IGN article seems to imply otherwise. I guess different people interpret things differently but now I'm not sure whose opinion would better represent my future experience with the game.

Eurogamer review was excellent. It discusses map design/region design in a reasonably objective manner while comparing to older games (even Let's Go!), while still praising the creativity of the game's usage of its British inspiration. I don't see how people are reading it as a 5/10 when the reviewer has so many positive things to say in the first half.

As someone midly interested in this game (never played any), I wonder how good the game would be for someone like me considering I don't have the baggage of previous entries.

Does OpenCritic take "Not scored" as Zeros then as that average doesn't mesh with the review scores it has listed

It's reviewed on a curve. Even some of the more positive reviews lament some of the disappointing elements of the games but then turn around and go: "But it's Pokemon!!!!" and bump the score up.
So its the best game in years .. but things are 'easier compared to SM and Let's Go'?

None of the reivews I've read so far even mention everything that's been cut as a negative.
A lot of us do, because we fear a failure will be the only thing that will get GF to reassess the way they make these games and improve them.
It would still be incredibly linear ad easy, with a variety of technical issues and poor story pacing. Now whether those kinds of things will affect your enjoyment or not is of course personal.
They don't take unscored as zeroes, but I believe the review score updates slowly. I've noticed that it doesn't update immediately as they add reviews.

So... I guess now the Nintendo bias is a confirmed fact? I'll just take any major Nintendo release metacritic and subtract 10 or so points to get the actual score from now on tbh.
I've seen all the leaks, datamines and about 6 hours of streams.

I personally only noticed framerate issues in sandstorms in the wild area, aside from that it's fine. Pop in issues are a plenty.
It's better if you didn't play any others as you won't miss most of the stuff cut. It's all new and Pokémon games generally have decent enough single player campaigns.
