Grass is my favorite type, but water Pokémon tend to have better utility.

Gen 1 Fire
Gen 2 Fire
Gen 3 Grass
Gen 4 Fire/Grass though usually Fire
Gen 5 Fire
Gen 6 Water
Gen 7 Fire/Grass
Gen 8 Fire

So Fire for the most part, though I do like the occasional grass starter

Gen 1: Charmander
Gen 2: Cyndaquil
Gen 3: Treecko
Gen 4: Chimchar
Gen 5: Snivy
Gen 6: Froakie
Gen 7: Litten
Gen 8: Grookey

Fire - 4
Water - 1
Grass - 3

Predominately fire types it would seem. Though I'll always have a special place in my heart for Treecko, Snivy, Froakie, and Grookey.

Hehe I mean , everyone always gets all three eventually , Im just talking about the one people chose to start the game.

Well if I never planned on getting any other starter than this picture will be my answer. Mind you I haven't played SW/SH but I'd go with Sobble there too.

Fire - Charmander
Water - Totodile
Fire - Torchic
Fire - Chimchar
Fire - Tepig
Fire - Fennekin
Fire - Litten
Fire - Scorbunny

I'm a man of consistency if nothing else. Totodile was the only design strong enough to break my PokeArson streak.

Red- Charmander
Silver- Cyndaquil
Sapphire- Mudkip
(XD- Jolteon)
Diamond- Piplup
White- Snivy
Y- Fennekin
Moon- Popplio
Shield- Sobble

Healthy mix of Fire and Water. My usual reasoning for not picking Grass is that the starters usually don't learn Sleep Powder while nearly every other early Grass type does.

I: Charmander
II: Totodile
III: Torchic/Treecko (in later playthroughs)
IV: Chimchar
V: Snivy
VI: Froakie
VII: Rowlet
VIII: Sobble

Mostly Fire and Water, haha.

Almost always grass type. Some times water (X/Y & Shield) but don't think I've ever picked a fire starter.

Gen 1: Charmander > Squirtle > Bulbasaur (all great)
Gen 2: Totodile > Cyndaquil > Chikarita (all good)
Gen 3: Mudkip = Treecko >>>> Torchic (first 2 awesome, Torchic and Blaziken overrated garbage)
Gen 4: Chimchar > Turtwig >>> Piplup (first 2 great)
Gen 5: Snivy >>>>> Oshawott and Tepig (even Snivy is meh, worst gen for starters)
Gen 6: Froakie > Fennekin > I don't even remember the grass starter's first form (Greninja is the best)
Gen 7: Rowlet > the others I don't know
Gen 8: Grooky > Sobble > the other one

I stopped really playing Pokemon after gen 5

Always bird first, if not available water. Exception was charmander cause the dragon-dino-bird connection and wings and all.

Blue - I've played Blue about two dozen times. I picked Squirtle the most and Charmander the fewest

Silver - I had intended to pick Chikorita but was doing a quick run to grab a Cyndaquil to trade to my brother and restart. It ended as a shiny Cyndaquil so I stuck with him.

Emerald - Torchic, and he still follows me around via Bank all these years later

Diamond - Piplup. Empoleon is top 3 favorite Pokemon. It was close between Turtwig though, who's another top tier starter.

White - Oshawatt, just because it was the least bad of the three. Samurott and Emboar actually have grown on me some in the years since.

Y - Chespin. Best grass starter that isn't Bulbasaur.

Moon - Rowlet. The only good starter this gen. Incineroar making it into Smash Bros instead of Decidueye is a travesty.

Sword - Another gen where all the starters are bad, so I went Grookey as "least bad"

That gives me:

Grass - 3
Water - 3
Fire - 2

So pretty even, though Grass was not present until it swept the last three gens.

Exclusively water for all gens, ever since Squirtle in Red. Even when I prefer another evolutionary line (like Snivy in Gen 5), it's a tradition I just can't bring myself to break.

Grookey because drums are the best. Piplup because penguins are the best, and fire all the other times because all other things equal, I like fire the most as a type and usually I like the fire starter's design.

I always pick my starter based on the design. This somehow led me to alternate between Water type and Grass type except for gen 1.
So:
Gen 1 - Fire/Charmander
Gen 2 - Water/Totodile
Gen 3 - Grass/Treecko
Gen 4 - Water/Piplup
Gen 5 - Grass/Snivy
Gen 6 - Water/Froakie
Gen 7 - Grass/Rowlet
Gen 8 - Water/Sobble

Gen 1: Grass
Gen 2: Fire
Gen 3: Fire
Gen 4: Water
Gen 5: Grass
Gen 6: Water
Gen 7: Water
Gen 8: Water

I've probably used most of them on replays and in Third versions, but these were my initial choices.

Gen 1 - Bulbasaur
Gen 2 - Cyndaquil
Gen 3 - Mudkip
Gen 4 - Piplup (Dawn's hilarious Piplup in the anime back then was the reason why)
Gen 5 - Oshawott
Gen 6 - Haven't played yet (Probably Fire)
Gen 7 - Litten
Gen 8 - Haven't played yet (Probably Fire as well)

These choice were made due to which design I found most appealing, with Bulbasaur being the only grass starter I choose and my all time number one favorite.

Squirtle (Water)
Cyndaquil (Fire)
Mudkip (Water)
Puplup (Water)
Snivy (Grass)
Froakie (Water)
Rowlet (Grass)
And I never bought SwSh, but I can tell you I would have 100% picked Sobble (Water)

Seems I have a thing for water types.

Gen 1: Bulbasaur
Gen 2: Cyndaquil
Gen 3: Mudkip
Gen 4: Turtwig
Gen 5: Snivy (They all suck. One of my biggest issues with Gen 5.)
Gen 6: Froakie
Gen 7: Popplio
Gen 8: Grookey (They all suck)

So 3 Grass starters, 1 Fire starter, and 4 Water starters.

Edit: Here's a tier list:

Gen 1: Water
Gen 2: Grass
Gen 3: Water
Gen 4: Water
Gen 5: Fire
Gen 6: Grass
Gen 7: Water
Gen 8: Grass

So I'm pretty evenly split between Grass and Water. Tepig is the only fire starter I prefer, and that's not saying much (I love gen 5, but it's starters are awful)

Red: Charmander
Gold: Totodile
Ruby: Torchic
Diamond: Chimchar
Black: Tepig
Y: Froakie
Moon: Rowlet
Shield: Grookey

If given the choice now, though, I'd go for Treecko instead of Torchic, Turtwig instead of Chimchar and Snivy instead of Tepig.

Gen 1 Fire
Gen 2 Fire
Gen 3 Fire
Gen 4 Fire
Gen 5 Fire (even though Emboar is shit. Worst starter along with Delphox and Primarena. If the other Gen 5 starters were much better i would've picked them over Emboar but they were okay at best so I sticked eith fire. Samurott is the best of the three by a mile.)
Gen 6 Grass because fuck Delphox. CHESNAUGHT RULES.
Gen 7 Fire
Gen 8 Fire

Water Type all the way up until Gen 8, which I picked Fire-type because Scorbunny is -way- better looking to me than the final evo of the Water-starter.

Fire every time with two exceptions. In Alpha Sapphire, I wanted to create a Hoenn-only team without using any of the Pokemon I used in the original, which meant I had to choose a different starter, so I chose Treecko. In Moon, I thought since we're living on islands, I would need Surf a bunch more, so I picked Popplio, which is the cutest starter anyway.

I don't believe I've ever picked fire, except for Gen 1. And I picked all 3 back then on replays.

Only counting the first set of mainline games for each generation:

Bulbasaur
Chikorita
Mudkip
Turtwig
Oshawott
Chespin
Popplio
Sobble

I'd definitely pick a few different ones though these days. I consider Treecko to be my actual Hoenn starter and Tepig to be my Unova starter.
