The iconic Japanese Gen 3/4-era logo of the mainline games makes a return for the first time with Scarlet and Violet. Combined with the fact that Legends had a unique logo makes me think they want to make the distinction between "Pocket Monsters" and "Pokémon Legends" clear in the series branding.

They generally change up the logo with every generation, but that one and variations of it was used heavily, across 12 mainline games (including BDSP) as well as several spin-offs (Box, Pinball RS, XD, and more).
I wish they'd at least change the colors of the western version's Pokémon logo.

Well, one and done. All 3 starters look awesome. Outfits are cute. Graphics are impressive for a first-party Switch open world Pokemon game, they're fine. Gameplay hints at being close to PLA. It's everything I wanted. Will pre-order asap. There's nothing stopping them from getting my money.

They really need to ditch the old Pokemon logo. It's a disgusting relic and should have been replaced during Gen 5.

The following had three year gaps:

Gold/Silver and Ruby/Sapphire
Black/White and X/Y
X/Y and Sun/Moon
Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield
Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet
Fair does. I think the remakes of red and blue and diamond and pearl, plus Archeus made it seem like there has been no down time with the series.

I really get the impression that both legendaries will be snakes/dragons, the fonts have a curvy feel and you could easily use Scales + XXX and Viper + XXX to create their names

Finally watched the trailer. Can't tell if it's more open world than Arceus.

Looks like another iterative step, which is cool I guess.

Was thinking something similar. They probably want to distinguish between "traditional" Pokemon games and Legends because they have pretty different focuses. Pocket Monsters will probably be used to signal that a Pokemon game has the traditional battle system, a focus on battling in general, has you travel to various towns throughout the region, etc. vs Legends' focus on catching Pokemon and crafting, etc.

ATM I think people should prepare for something closer to SWSH in terms of game mechanics though god please do not have it take 10 days to enter a bloody battle I-
I think so as well. Pocket Monsters may be equivalent to the traditional Pokémon League quest, while Legends may focus on more action-oriented gameplay, especially catching. I don't think the overworld battles have to be exclusive to either style, of course.

So when do you think we get the next batch of info? My guess is probably in April or May?

They've stated its seamless open world, so it seems they've gone the full way with Arceus as a midpoint

Somewhere.
I see the pepper comparison, but I feel like Fuecoco could be based on an apple too. It's head looks very much like half of one. Maybe that's why I am particularly fond of it. XD

Image cool, but this image is missing the Let Go and Legends logos.

Starters are adorable, with Fuecoco being my highlight, and gen 9 reveal was a BIG surprise for me. Not a good or bad thing right now. I just think it is way too soon for a new gen since we just got Legends. It is also way to soon for me to judge anything about the game, but I think it is already fair to say that I'm disappointed with them sticking with 2 versions after Legends. While I think it is too early to be disappointed because it won't have Legends features, since I don't know which they won't have, I also think I would be a fool to expect them there. So I'll just wait and see.

I know that this is way, way, way early to be saying such things, but I hope the fully open-world structure doesn't mean there's, like, four towns or something.

Kind of hope they keep the catching Pokemon mechanics from Arceus here. Really enjoy being able to catch certain Pokémon by sneaking up without battle, and also having the battle option as well. Also the ability to move your character during battle and seeing the battle more from a 'trainer POV' (if that makes sense) is something I really liked as well, and would be nice to see here as well.

I think a mix of Arceus battle and catching mechanics with a 'modern day' Pokémon setting with bigger cities would potentially be interesting to me, IF that's what they're going for. Not quite sure what they'll do with the story and general gameplay structure beyond that. If it's another 'beat 8 gym leaders, take down evil organization, and clear the Elite 4' type deal, I'm not necessarily opposed to that, but definitely would welcome another shake up to that formula at this point.

Also, fingers crossed there will be some good trainer customization options in this one, especially going back to a modern setting. Default trainer looks fine, but definitely want to change up that hairstyle and outfit lol.

Yeah, I get the worry, but its not as if Aonuma woke up today, saw the trailer and was like 'Oh shit, delay Zelda!". This is something's that probably known about for years, particularly given Game Freak pretty much always make the dates they set.

Also, it's not as if releasing the two games near each other will have any impact on either. If anything, it'll give Switch a ridiculous holiday line-up, right around when its competitors will probably be getting more stock in.

The only thing that's going to delay Zelda is Zelda.

2009: Platinum
2010: HeartGold/SoulSilver
2011: Black/White
2012: Black2/White2
2013: X/Y
2014: Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire

2016: Sun/Moon
2017: Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon
2018: Let's Go Pikachu/Let's Go Eevee
2019: Sword/Shield

I do get where you're coming from kinda, fwiw. We've never had two games basically back-to-back before, which feels damn weird - even if, on a technicality, they're in two separate "years." But it might be worth noting, if you're not yet doing so, that we had a six-year streak already, with a year off followed by a four-year streak. They've been coming hard and fast since immediately after Platinum's three-year gap from Diamond/Pearl.

Sprigatito reminds me of Morgana from Persona 5 for some reason. Maybe it's the eyes.

But I think I might actually be on-board with this one. PLA brought me back into the franchise in a way that I haven't been for years. If Game Freak can successfully build on some of the concepts introduced in that game, then I'm in for this.

Yea i feel like this further confirms my head canon theory that sword and shield were originally just 3ds games that got ported up to the switch cause boy that jump is massive
It's impossible to think they planned to release a new generation on the 3ds in 2019. The console was already dead in 2018.

This feels too early. I really wish they took an extra year to improve the environments. Player characters look like those school children you beat the crap out of in the first routes of every Pokemon game.

I dig the grass cat tho.

It's just a weird hunch but I feel we might see a time jump of sorts? Like maybe that's why the MC designs are based on young ones.
I was thinking this too, they look like 8 year olds and they're dressed in school uniforms so idk it would be a cool idea to show the characters age and show that the journey to the top takes time. Or Youngster Joey is about to show us what a Rattata can do

I still can't get over the massive graphics jump from Legends. Which already blew me away compared to SWSH. GameFreak is catching up at lightning speed.

Fwiw, 2004 had FR/LG and Emerald release in Japan the same year. FR/LG in January, Emerald in September.
