Pokémon GO from Niantic has surpassed $3.6 billion in global player spending as the game celebrates its four-year anniversary since launching on July 6, 2016, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates.
The blockbuster title has remained the clear leader in location-based gaming, a category it trailblazed across the globe thanks to the mass appeal of the IP and its ideal fit to the genre. A challenger has emerged, in Japan at least, in the shape of Dragon Quest Walk from Square Enix, which has generated more than $540 million in player spending since its launch in September 2019.
Meanwhile, the next most successful location-based mobile game, Jurassic World Alive from Ludia, has accumulated $76.5 million, while Let's Hunt Monsters from Tencent has picked up close to $70 million on iOS alone in China. In terms of global appeal, no other title in this category has been able to achieve the level of success that Pokémon GO has.

Pokémon GO Surpasses $3.6 Billion in Lifetime Revenue as It Celebrates Four-Year Launch Anniversary

Pokémon GO generated $445 million in H1 2020, putting it on track to equal or surpass its best year ever, Sensor Tower data shows.

I'm the smartest person in the world and want to point out that not all that money goes to Nintendo. I may be the smartest of all time.

That's really impressive.

Kinda incredible how during that launch period where it was the biggest thing that happened in pop culture in decades you were immediately perceived as some sort of charlatan if you believed the game would be relevant at all beyond the end of that year. And then reality happened.

I don't play it at all but I'm happy for its success, never seen anything like it in my lifetime. It'll never (probably?) reach that cultural phenomenon state again but it's impressive how sustained its popularity has been nevertheless.

Summer 2016 was fucking weird man. I still remember just endless groups of people walking all over looking for various Pokémon. Even in my area where you don't see a lot of people walking outside they were in droves.

Pokémon Go: The game honestly wasn't all that great but Pokémon Go: The social experiment was something else.

I have no idea who still is using it.
It's kind of hilarious that Pokémon Go has Pokémon syndrome from the 90s where it's unfathomable popularity meant that it felt dead in comparison no matter how popular it still was. It's one of the most popular mobile titles.
I thought the game was pretty friendly in terms of spending. What's driving revenue?
Pokemon Gofest has already sold over 700,000 tickets at $15 USD a pop: https://nianticlabs.com/en/blog/pokemongofest2020-lookcloser/

They do different events you can only buy with cash rather than in-game currency. I've grabbed 2 or 3 of those.

People also often buy the boxes with raid passes, remote raid passes, and incubators. Inventory and Pokemon storage increases too. I haven't had to in a while but I definitely did some purchases when I felt the payoff was worth it.

It's not bad but it's the hardcore who play it all the time who really support and set aside money for it. I did it for awhile cuz them eggs won't hatch themselves and I need incubators 😖
I still have people in the group I occasionally play in talk about how they spend about $50-$100 a month.

I still love this game. I picked it back up last year and have played nearly every day. im trying to get the 50 excellent throws by tomorrow and I'm all out of poke balls.
I gave up on spending money for hatching. The remote raids when done will let me play with family members.
This game helped me a lot with my minimum step count.

Yeah, I'm at <$100 lifetime in-game I think which is kinda crazy given how much value I've got out of the game. I did purchase a Go Plus which I lost and have travelled for Go Fest before which I guess adds more. But like you, I know people who spent $50 - $100 a month sometimes to raid and such.

Jesus, imagine if they really tried to extract as much as possible from the users.

On another note, too bad they can't use the money to staff GF and not cut corners in their games

I would've expected it to slow down in 2020 due to COVID, apparently their updates for the situation worked out really well? Wow.
Their solutions for a lot of things such as raids required purchasing new things that are limited (you can only have 3 Remote Raid Passes at a time and they don't come in separate bundles)

Not completly related but I didn't know DQ Walk was such a sucess.

Colopl has also done quite well out of this deal.

Additionally even with the coronavirus in the 1H with lockdowns everywhere it's also noteworthy that Pokemon GO has adjusted with remote raids and so on.

Theyre gonna make a lot of money when Shiny Dialga, Palkia and Giratina-O come out.

I dont think theyve made any boxes with Remote Raid passes in them yet. They probably should though.

You can have more than 3 if you buy the bundle while having 1 or 2 on you already. It only stops you from buying it if you have 3 already.

That's really impressive.

What I love most about this is that Cengage's MyStatLab homework assignments still include a question written in 2016 about how Pokemon Go was a major success out the gate but slowed down more than investors anticipated. I don't recall what you're supposed to do to solve whatever equation was included or anything of the sort. But it's hilarious to me that current institutionalized online mathematics is pushing the narrative too.

But what I'm saying is that a lot of their play at home features have required more financial investment
Yeah, they started it off by giving out a ton of free stuff and giving away legendaries in Go Battle League but eventually moved to just monetising everything even more. If you're stuck at home, the only way to get a decent number of spawns is to buy incense and the only way to raid is to buy remote passes.

Yeah true true. If you're not near a gym, or you are near one and it's contentious (or you're in Australia) you're pretty much screwed.

I was so happy and surprised when we had the 1 Coin bundles and were offering things so easily. Then they got all money grabby with the play at home stuff.

Equal to 60 million copies of a $60 game sold at full price, by the way, or 90 million copies of a $40 game.

In other words, these are the Pokemon games that have released since the launch of Pokemon Go:

Pokemon Sun & Moon
Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee
Pokemon Sword & Shield

It has generated more revenue than all of these.

Combined.

Niantic has done a pretty good job adding to the Go experience over the years, and the microtransactions somehow feel in no way predatory or mandatory (most of the time).

Barely spend money on the time Ive been playing.

I still see a alot of people playing in parks really impressive, i tried many times to play but there is nothing much to do.

There is A LOT to do in Pokémon GO, the game lacks a proper tutorial for newcomer or returning players, so the perception that it's as empty as it was at launch is still there.

I still play and I do spend occasionally. Spending less during these times but them I'm fortunate enough to live right by an accessible stop that generates a lot of spawns. My village has three gyms and a bunch of stops along my daily walking route. I can get my 50 coins a day most of the time which gets me an extra three remote raid passes every 5 days or so.

Looking forward to the raid invite feature as I've missed out on the legendaries released since lockdown. But they'll come back around.

The monetisation, even with the recent changes for the stay at home stuff, isn't predatory at all. I feel they play to people's impatience a lot but they have done much to reduce FOMO over the four years since launch; everything that you can get quickly by spending comes back around eventually if you are willing to wait for it.

The special ticketed items are generally good value for money, I feel.

My daily routines consist of:
  • Complete the daily free field research to maintain my streak.
  • Send gifts to all of my friends & open any gifts to advance friendship/attempt lucky.
  • Increase my buddy's friendship level as much as I can.
  • Use my daily free raid pass.
  • Work through as many PvP sets as possible.
On top of that:
  • Take local gyms for coins (teams are amicable here).
  • Battle Team Go Rocket as they pop up at stops (and now balloons).
  • Walk to hatch an egg or two.
  • Work on any event special research that might be available.
And that discounts actually catching. assessing and sorting the day's spawns. It's a fairly passive game, but I think that's kind of the point - you set your own goals.
