I'll 100% admit I'm shocked this isn't using the Sw/Sh style, or at the very least the Let's Go style, but I honestly kind of love that we're back in the 2.5D style! I'm more excited about these games than I have been for mainline Pokémon games in a while.

When they say faithful I sure hope that includes teams and levels and whatnot. The last two remakes we've had absolutely did not.

I can't believe you can have so much money and yet produce something like this. Obviously it's because people still buy them so they don't give a shit but come on.

These remakes complete the shift in philosophy originally signaled by excluding Emerald's improvements from ORAS. Even if they do include Platinum stuff in these, the focus is now clearly more on bringing the old games as they are to a new engine and audience. The first two felt more like bringing Kanto and Johto up to the current gen standards.

On one hand, I get it. Gens 7 and 8 made more changes to the level design than any prior gen, which is less compatible with reusing a region; a remake that lived up to what weren't even very high expectations would've taken a lot more work than the beloved HGSS.

But on the other, I'm not really looking forward to remakes anymore.

...

I've literally said in this thread I don't like the visuals of this game. I am not even really looking forward to this game and doubt I'll play it if it's just a 1:1 remake with this artstyle.

What narrative am I making? I said I don't understand people saying something looks awful, but still going "yeah day 1". You aren't under an obligation to keep buying more Pokemon games if you don't like them.

RSE is my favorite Gen, but I didn't buy ORAS because I was burnt out on Pokemon back then and thought the artstyle looked ugly.
Because people can think it looks awful yet still want to play it. It ain't a hard concept.

The Pokemon fanbase has reached a situation where pleasing everyone in it is completely impossible now.
Not really
1. Make games that graphically look in line with other games on the system
2. Stop cutting Pokemon/features every gen, and instead build up on them
3. Stop dumbing down the difficulty (I don't mean QoL features, I mean stuff like more linear routes, no dungeons, EXP Share not being able to be toggled)
4. Bring back the Battle Frontier, or an equivalent

That's it. That solves 99% of the problems. You guys can't intentionally ignore what people are saying for the sake of your arguments.

Fire type Elite Four member to have Drifblim, Steelix, and Lopunny confirmed. I seriously hope they have at least the Platinum dex.

Agreed though that I hope they don't reduce difficulty of the opposing trainers, but knowing how this usually goes...

I'm down for this, but I'm really worried it won't have the improvements from Platinum in it. Not having the story would suck, but the updated Pokémon access that Platinum brought was so crutial to the game.

Wow.

Really wasn't expecting so harsh a reception to the graphics.

If you see the image below without any context, what would be your honest opinion about it? That it looks like a modern game? I can't imagine many would think it looks good -- in fact, I'd say it cheapens out whatever product they are releasing, especially one that has been highly awaited. And thus a harsh reception is not surprising.

Someone appease my laziness...did they say anything about multiplayer for this? Either local like let's go or online?

Me and the wife had a blast doing the co-op on Let's Go and I ended up liking it about 1000x more than I would have otherwise.

This will literally be the first time I'm saying this to a mainline game - I won't be supporting this.

Story-wise, I'm expecting a postgame episode akin to what we've seen in the past rather than the "Platinumization" treatment from 2009. I'm not thrilled about that but I kind of liked the ORAS episode so whatevs.

The DP Dex is rough, though. Yeahhhhh. Hoping that's changed.

People have spent the last 2 years shitting on the SWSH engine. Don't pretend not to understand this
That doesn't change that the remakes were always in line with the current generation. With the advent of Let's Go!, part the discussion leading up to these games was "will they be traditional remakes or will they try a Let's Go! approach again?" I don't think anyone expected a 1:1 remake like this.

I think my first thought would be, "well, at least it has an actual background."

Okay? Doesn't change what i stated. They usually use the same engine, but with improvements, for remakes, so saying people were expecting games based on the SwSh engine, but with improvements, isn't some farfetched idea. Again, there's no way you guys don't get this

That artstyle is a two pack of ass. Looks like a 2014 mobile game. Really bizarre choice to outsource these games to an outside studio. I'm glad GF is making Legends Arceus but I'm not sure how I feel about them doing it at the expense of DPPT. Pretty sad to see Gen 4 not get the same treatement Gens 1-3 got.

I think the Pokémon company has entered the sonic team phase of throwing shit to the wall until something eventually sticks. After decades of almost identical looking games, every new Pokémon game is in a different style now. Some you'll like, some you will not.

What WERE people expecting? I want to hear a serious answer to this. Because all I remember regarding talk around remakes were sentiments about how the series was better in 2D and how Diamond and Pearl were at the peak of the franchise. But now that it's not in a 3D overworld and it looks like a faith D/P remake suddenly that's a problem. This isn't analogous at all to getting a burnt steak, its more analogous to ordering "steak" and getting upset at receiving a "ribeye" instead of a "new york strip".
I don't know anyone who considers Diamond and Pearl the peak of the franchise, LOL. They were incredibly rushed games that ran like molasses.

Most Sinnoh love comes from Platinum.

I love this art style. Love the top down 2D look and so happy they kept it for the remake. Day 1.

Also, I too hope this is based off of the changes introduced in Platinum. Would make this perfect.

The Pokemon legends game looks ambitious and amazing, even if rough, but this... this looks like fucking trash through and through. They will probably sell millions sadly.

Not in a fucking million years. Go and buy glasses.
Nah, I'll go and buy this remake and enjoy it since I know it will make you upset :)

Made a few quick n dirty comparisons based off of the images on the official site. Overall the environments look really nice, and the new lighting is definitely a big upgrade.

Cant compare the two. Do the remakes really REALLY look worse? How would that be possible? And how are these remakes and not ports? Can someone explain?

1. Thats fair, since I also don't like the visuals here
2. No, I don't want every dumb gimmick like Z-moves, Mega Evo, Gigantamax, slapped onto every game with a Pokedex reaching the 1000's. I'd fundamentally prefer a strong new 150 ish pokemon with little overlap from previous games because I caught and saw those pokemon before. I don't want to do it again. That's why "regional variants" is the best gimmick Pokemon has come up with post BW
3. Pokemon is still a game meant for children. I don't have the patience anymore for a cave where I can't see shit, I need flash to see, keep running into Zubats and training each pokemon individually. If you want the option to turn of EXP share, fine. But time waste dungeons/caves can die in the past.
4. Post game is fine

So there, I have issues with 2 of your proposed "fixes" that would make everyone love Pokemon. You can't just say "my list would make everyone love pokemon again". It would make you love pokemon, but 2 of your proposed things would make me hate it.

Honestly from what I've seen, the art here is more appealing to me than the other game. I would take simple but colorful and stylized over that sparse, bargain-bin BOTW look any day of the week

They don't look worse than Diamond and Pearl, although the chibi character designed are certainly an acquired taste. If you want a sense of the graphics its

Diamond << OmegaRuby << Brilliant Diamond << Let's Go << Sword.

Id say that's a pretty equal spread too. Brilliant Diamond is pretty much halfway between Omega Ruby and Let's Go

These are remakes rather than ports because they're made from the ground up, just very faithful to the originals.

I dig the 1:1 remake approach because I don't mind the games being a bit dated and loved Diamond/Pearl. Hoo boy is that art style ugly though.

This one looks weird to me. It's like they're going for a similar chibi style to LGPE, but lower fidelity, with less stylized textures that end up making everything look pretty drab. Almost mobile-gamey.
This game looks like it should precede LGPE. By a few years.
But the truth is the other way around? Very strange.

Sinnoh enthusiasts you have my sympathy today. Left to right this looks like a before and after...

XC1nYl9.png

Not every gameplay experiment from LGPE was a success but the game was very pretty. Chef's kiss artstyle as far as I'm concerned.
This one...not so much. It looks like development began on 3DS and got moved to Switch after a long stall.

At least Pokemon Legends looks like a pretty fun experiment. I'm still happy today because I have that and Snap to look forward to.
I also think it's generally positive news that they let another developer handle this remake so they could internally focus on a big project like Legends. Unfortunately the developer they chose...well... results don't look great.

I hope it's at least got all the platinum stuff. Yeesh.
yikes. Big step down.

The super chibi stuff is definitely a big turnoff. And generally, I don't think I need to go back to the old games. Not for me, but am excited about the Arc. Happy that people who aren't will get this.

I can't speak for the person you quoted, but I didn't read their second point as referring to the generational gimmicks like Z-Moves and Gigantamax. There are plenty of optional features that were cut for seemingly no reason throughout the years. Things like Secret Bases, for example. The games really need more things to do in their barren towns.

???

*Looks at Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby*
Based on what? Previous remakes haven't. Or rather they've had some amalgamation of some of the 3rd version content, but not all of it
HGSS had most of the new features of crystal. i guess you could be right, but the only thing i can see not making it is the battle frontier. the new dex, distortion world, new pokemon forms, i see all of those making it into this remake.
