Hell yeah, give me Tooka-Laylee. Impossible Lair was great, so I have full confidence in them to take another stab at a 3D platformer.

Didn't they promise DLC for the first game that never came out?

anyway probably another 3D sequel is my guess

I liked Yooka-Laylee enough to almost platinum it, if it wasn't for a bug in the Casino level that left me one pagie short, but it was overall not the best game... I just like platformers too much. Luckily Impossible Lair was a much better game for it's genre, so hopefully their next game pans out as well.

I don't know if this is about their next game but 2 of the 3 current job offerts on their website put "experience in online play" as "desirable". Though it's not specified as a "required skill".

!!!!!

Really pumped for this. I very much enjoyed what I played of YK1 and the very little I've played of Impossible Lair (so far). I'm sure what they have cooked up is going to be great. I wonder if it's a racing game or a game based on one of the NPCs in the first two.

I really want them to try 3D again. Impossible Lair is fantastic but I thought the first game was decent and laid a solid foundation for improvement.

Impossible Lair was a decent platformer with a god awful game structure. The whole idea that I have to play these linear platforming levels over and over again to find these hidden collectibles so I can progress onto the next batch of levels, only to have to do the same thing again, is horrible and antiquated game design, and I honestly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I hope I'm not the only one to have provided them with this feedback. It's needless padding and it really rubs me the wrong way.
I picked this up to play and was immediately put off by the game. Watch too much crap in between just playing levels. Haven't picked it up since.

As much as I like Yooka & Laylee I'd really like to see them move forward with their idea of having a shared Playtonic Universe and make a game starring a different character. Fingers crossed for Dr. Puzz or Schell. I wouldn't mind a kart racer either though...

Probably just someone larping, but there was just a "leak"/rumor posted a couple days ago that they are making a viva pinata game with microsoft.

I swear these guys just can't escape the constant rumors that they're working on an old IP no matter how often they shoot them down. They're a studio that literally only exists because Microsoft horribly mismanaged its talent and they've said multiple times that they like being indie, so I have no idea why people constantly think they're about to be acquired by MS to make (insert beloved Rare IP here) outside of wishful thinking.

I'm guilty of the acquisition speculation (see above) just because it makes a lot of sense - Microsoft doesn't do anything with its old IPs, Playtonic's games are good but don't set the world on fire sales-wise, which can leave their fate as a studio kind of up-in-the-air. And selfishly I just really want another true Banjo game.

I hope some day Playtonic will be next in line by Nintendo to collab on a new indie IP ala Snipperclips (SFB Games), The Stretchers (Tarsier Studios), and Good Job (Paladin Studios). I'm legit shocked it's yet to happen.

Hated what I played of the first game, but Impossible Lair is genuinely fantastic. Looking forward to their next game, if only for that.

The only improvement they could have made to Impossible Lair was having a map that lets you visit each platforming stage without having to walk around the overworld after you've beaten the stage.

Hitring Start brings you to an overworld map. Once on that map, You can hit L/R to quickly switch between levels on the fly. This works for any level you have already found in the overworld, so you dont have to physically walk between levels you already found. You can fast travel this way all over the map too.

You're not wrong, it makes perfect sense for MS to acquire Playtonic so they can keep making the kind of games Rare used to be famous for but doesn't want to do these days, with the added benefit of being able to use and revive the IP they originally made in the first place instead of having to make similar-but-legally-distinct versions. Now if only MS had any sense!

I remember being one of the backers of Yooka Laylee. I'm hoping for a new IP in the Yooka Laylee universe, maybe a Conker spiritual successor?

Currently playing Impossible Lair, and enjoying it. I'd like to see them do a game based on the top-down view of its overworld. Like a Touryst-esque platformer. Or just a more refined 3D platformer like NSLT.

Racing game would be sweet, too. Would like to see a DKR style racer again.

The Initiative's first game is a Perfect Dark remake. Even before then we had Battletoads.

I must have forgotten about that. Thanks for the reminder. That does sound slightly familiar to me now that you mention it.

Hopefully it's better than the first game.

I still need to play the second one, but found the first one boring enough I haven't even tried it, even though I've read it's much better. My one Kickstarter disappointment.

It's honestly not even just much better- it's night and day. I was in the same boat as you with Yooka-Laylee, but Impossible Lair is fantastic and one of the best 2D platformers out there.

That's two games, and if you add Killer Instinct to that then you have a grand total of three Rare series that MS has bothered to do anything of worth with in the past 12 years. Not a very impressive showing of commitment to classic IP. Meanwhile we've gotten eight Gears games, ten Forza games, and eleven Halo games in that same time.

Can't wait to see what it is! Glad these guys have their independence and I think talks of a MS acquisition are silly given their history.

If you want to play the blame game, blame Rare. Ironically, it's Microsoft that's doing the revival work for Rare's IP via third-party developers.

Hopefully they continue the path they started with Impossible Lair. The first Yooka-Laylee was a poor attempt at imitating Rare's golden era of 3D platformers. I think that's one of the biggest issues with these so called "spiritual successors," is that they often try to imitate old game conventions, and often poorly, rather than pushing their respective genre forward.

I think Playtonic realized this and the result was The Impossible Layer. It clearly had the intention of following in the foot steps of DKC, but implemented new ideas with things like the overworld map. It wasn't a perfect game but definitely a step in the right direction IMO.

If Playtonic take another stab at 3D platformers, or any of the genres from Rare's past, they should look to improve on the formula rather than making cheap imitations of the past.

It seems that the news are related to their rebranding rather than the new games they are working on.

Anyways, I'm always interested on the next thing from Playtonic. For all the criticism (mostly valid) that the first Yooka-Laylee received, I still consider it a really good game, and Impossible Lair is just excellent (I still can't believe how well the overworld and main stages with its alternative versions work together, along the concept of the titular lair), one of the best recent 2D platformers we had.

Hoping it's 3D too. They're just the kind of devs who would take the criticisms to heart and build on them, I think they would knock a second shot at 3D out of the park.

Loved both YL games, so I can't wait to find out what this is. Not sure I believe the Viva Piñata rumour, but I'd love to see what they could do with that IP.

Only really want a Diddy Kong Racing spiritual successor at this point.

If they make Yooka-Laylee 2, it better be on unreal engine instead of unity.

Wishful thinking but a Playtonic follow up to Tropical Freeze would be fantastic.

Either way this thread has inspired me to jump back in and finish Impossible Lair.

A lot of the best pieces from Impossible Lair aren't even the David Wise ones
