All I'm gonna say is that one of my best choices in recent years is picking up PC gaming as my secondary platform.

Sony will be fine. If anything, Japanese devs will unify behind them and drive the console.

I mean in much, much, much, much more minor news Danganronpa has just released on Xbox for the first time ever today, a month after the Switch release of Decadance.

Anything can happen of course but ATM the opposite of what you're saying is happening.

Can't be Square Enix. It has to be something that drives people to the platform. It will have to be Take-Two or EA. To get GTA or FIFA, you have leverage to keep certain games on the Sony platform from MS, but it goes both ways. It's not good for industry, but if Sony wants to counter with an acquisition it has to be someone with the IP that forces movement to Playstation. Square just doesn't have that.
What? Man this is getting silly now

Lmaoo. Gimme some of what you're having.

I mean, it's already happening in some places (like here in Brazil). The ammount of people buying PlayStations just for their exclusives is growing a lot. And it got worse after Microsoft invested heavily in Game Pass. It isn't rocket science, is it better to pay a monthly fee to play new games or use 1/3 of the minimum wage (yes, Sony games cost that ammount over here) to play Sony's ones?

This is a comment that I saw just now on a blog focused on PlayStation here in Brazil:

The difference between Sony and Microsoft is that Microsoft is acquiring studios to pump GamePass with more games for R$40/month. Sony has been pumping the dick in the ass of who needs to pay R$350 for remasters, director's cuts, and remakes.

Ugh, I get where you're going but I hate this concept of consolidation necessitates consolidation.
If they don't they're dead. MS have changed the face of the industry, for the worse, with their behaviour. That's simply the world we live in now. Sony either play by the new rules, in which they are at a huge disadvantage due to not being a trillion dollar mega corp, or they die.

Sony might be fine (but any COD hit will hurt). But to suggest devs will magically unify and drive the console is... sure is something. MS just needs to flash the cash and they'll flip. You think Capcom or Sega will back Sony no matter what? Both want to focus more on PC as well... and its not inconceivable that Xbox can get some sort of exclusivity with them. Or anyone really. Basically if Xbox wants it, and they are willing to pay for it, they can get that content. Sony cant just sit back and wait, if they do, it could be disastrous for them.

There are some scorching hot takes in here.

As long as PS still releases top tier games, I'm still happy, regardless if they become a smaller fish in the growing pond.

The reality is that there's limited things you can do when you're up against a significantly larger and more profitable organisation.

I think youre underestimating Sony's output here. MS has a ton of IPs that they can compete with as exclusives. Sony cannot compete when their studios release 2-3 big games a year and then develop for 4-5 years.

And also, this isnt the last acquisition for MS. And the fact that Gamepass is becoming an undeniable killer app cannot be understated either. There's no way Sony doesnt want that consistent revenue that they are lacking

It is functionally impossible for them to 'drive people' to PS. They need to stop the bleeding.

Like the chances of Killzone or Resistance could/would ever replace CoD single-player or MP, as might as well throw MAG into it.

256 battle royale even before battle royale booming.

Buddy, you are speaking my language! Still my favorite multiplayer experience on a Sony console ever!

SE doesn't compare to Starfield and CoD. It'd have to be GTA or FIFA. That's what he's saying at least. For what it's worth I don't really agree. I think the best play is just shoring up content so SE and Capcom both fit.

It is functionally impossible for them to 'drive people' to PS. They need to stop the bleeding.
Right, and more than that, they need to have some content so people still consider the platform. Even if it doesn't match CoD, you need IPs for your platform when things consolidate

I personally care about this acquisition really little, but it does make me nervous for PlayStation's future

What would be your take if Spidey was to release on Steam? Are potential SW sales good enough to take the chance despite potential HW losses?

Everyone's invited to chime on this topic, by the way.

I think MS has showed that releasing on Steam+Console isn't a huge blow, most people that buy games on Steam aren't starving to get a next gen console or anything

For that it's worth, Square Enix is probably the biggest reason I migrated from Nintendo to Sony's ecosystem in the nineties.

Nintendo survived the Wii U. I owned the Wii U and enjoyed it. Perhaps I'm delusional and not the right person to comment on all of this.

Sony and Playstation are going to be ok, they no longer compete with Microsoft anyway. The kind of audience they cater is different and it is always going to be there. I wouldn't be surprised to see Game Pass making in to their platforms tho, as a third party service and probably with some caveats.

How can you fight an acquisition war against a giant like Microsoft? It's not possible. They'll outbid every major deal Sony tries to enter.

Maybe if Apple acquires Sony but I don't see what's in it for them.

In your opinion, how do you think Sony will respond? They will most likely continue their organic growth of first party studios since it's become likelier that Microsoft will attempt to buy more publishers or stop them if they go after certain people.

Here's the thing.

I don't believe Sony is only interested in organic growth or 'closely-knit-acquisition', that's just a spin/lie/hoodwink.

I never said it here publicly because I don't like talking about acqusitions without any context or reference point to have a base of discussion on, but I always believed the few things below.

1. Sony as of 2018-2020 did not plan for major acquisitions. They expected to keep a lean organization/in line with how they operated.
2. But massive industry shifts in the past two years accelerated and changed the industry trend.
3. However, because Sony didn't account - both financially and strategically for major acquisitions in that period, they were not in both a headcount and cash flow position to openly engage or close deals.
4. They would only be able to do so AFTER April 2021.

And the below points are my speculation -

1. After April 2021, as I suspected, Sony started making acquisitions at a clip that was unlike how they were in previous generations.
2. However, I think a lot of 2021 acquisitions is more "backlog-oriented" - it's catching up to the fact that they were not in the strategical or financial 'allowance' ( by Sony Corp ) to make acquisitions, so they acquired partners close to them/already in talks in some capacity/have good working relationship.
3. We know that from Sony's financials, they emphasized 'strategic investment in mobile' as an area of focus.
4. I suspect that in coming months, we will see SIE embark on acquisitions/strategic investment that is more substantial and not part of the organic growth-family of "rationale."

To add to the aspect contributed by Activision/Blizzard:

- This is very much a 'we won't know until it happens' - but Sony is surely in conversation at the corporate level on the impact of the acquisition to their bottom line, and I would hardly be surprised if a conversation around reorientating their financial cap on strategic investments change, but that is purely speculative.

Sony technically has enough cash on their balance sheet to acquire
  • Sega
  • Square
  • Capcom
I'm not saying they will, or that I want them to. But if they wanted to retaliate they'd be the 3 companies I'd go for.

I get it FF is huge, but you need the counter to CoD. One gets you GTA, NBA2k, etc. the other gets you FIFA, Madden, Battlefield, etc. There's not enough regular FF out there to compete. But agree that's my opinion...I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

Sony cannot "get" sports exclusively.

It's more that this is a sign that Microsoft is determined to have a monopoly on the industry and doesn't care how much they have to spend, I expect one of the big Japanese publishers to be next. I don't even play on Sony hardware much but I don't like where this is going
They'll find it difficult to buy one of the big Japanese publishers, I personally think they'll go for ea and then call it a day for a while.

Somewhere the old guard at Playstation are saying to the new leadership "we told you so"....this was Microsoft's plan from the beginning and something the industry used to fear but they've rocked everyone to sleep with that sweet ol game pass deal and wanting games everywhere bs messaging. Whether we like it or not the industry will never be the same for Playstation this move will take away market share and it sucks I fully expect the games media to continue to cheer Microsoft on after every 3rd party publisher they purchase. Hopefully Sony continues to focus more on building its own ip they can't compete with Microsoft by swallowing up 3rd party publishers and it's not fair for people to expect them to compete with a 2 trillion $ company. Microsoft should've been broken up decades ago they've literally tried to do this in every industry they've participated in. To be clear Playstation isn't doomed lol they still make the best games in the industry in my book so they'll be fine but it's obvious to me that the business of Playstation is going to change and hopefully it's for the better.
