If Sony were to acquire SE, this is what would be included in the acquisition:

Popular IPs:
Final Fantasy
Dragon Quest
Kingdom Hearts
Tomb Raider
Life is Strange
Just Cause
Drakengard/Nier
Deus Ex
Star Ocean
Thief
Parasite Eve
Avengers (License)

Notable Developers
Square Enix
Eidos
Crystal Dynamics
Tokyo RPG
Taito
Luminous
IO Interactive (small stake)

Famous Manga/Anime/Film:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Black Butler
Soul Eater
Gangan Comics
Visual Works

Its a good hold and it could be a good counter to Bethesda, at least on the RPG side of things. I still don't think they would sell though.
I'm bored, time for more assumptions and lists.

Here's what a Capcom acquisition would look like.

Popular IPs
Ace Attorney
Breath of Fire
Darkstalkers
Dead Rising
Devil May Cry
Dino Crisis
Dragon's Dogma
Final Fight
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Lost Planet
Mega Man
Monster Hunter
Ōkami
Onimusha
Resident Evil
Street Fighter
Viewtiful Joe

Developers
Hmm Capcom?
There's a lot of division under them.

A bit weaker than SE but with a wider range of genre and IPs, definitely a huge for the fighters and action titles.

Bonus! Konami *sigh*

Popular IPs
Bomberman
Castlevania
Contra
Dance Dance Revolution
Frogger
Metal Gear
Pro Evolution Soccer
Silent Hill
Suikoden
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Zone of the Enders

Notable Developers
Konami Digital Entertainment (like Capcom, lots of divisions)
PES Productions

Additional properties
Bemani
Hudson Soft
Gambling Machines and Casinos

Weakest of all 3 for sure. Not sure if its worth buying the whole damn business just for 3 IPs and Gambling Machines. Best case scenario, they sell Digital Entertainment with the IPs included but with licenses for continued usage in their gambling machines. The problem is with mobile, they still make a lot profit with those games.

Could Bluepoint have been working on a second project all along or are they not big enough?

No idea.

Shareholders wouldn't be the ones leaking potential acquisition discussions.

M&A discussion typically gets leaked by:
- It is an auction type process, in which the seller's investment bank reaches out to a group of potential buyers and someone doesn't adhere to the NDA after they drop out of the process
- The seller or the seller's investment bank are looking for a better offer/bid in what was originally closed talks with the counterparty
- Investment banks that aren't the financial advisors, but are trying to get a piece of the financing or introduce another party into the conversations so they can claim advisory fees

The amount of employees for a company that are brought "under the tent" with regards to an M&A is extremely small, and it's usually only as needed to prevent leaks.

Many public companies are in talks regarding acquisitions or mergers constantly and it never leaks. M&A also depends on the deal and the parties. Some can take years to announce as talks start and stop for varying factors. I've also seen multi-billion dollar mergers take less than a month from initial conversations (if you're merging with one of your competitors who is also public, due diligence can be expedited since 1) A lot of the information is public and available 2) You know your competitor very well.

Sony very well could be having conversations with Capcom/Square Enix and it may announce with as little warning as the Zenimax deal. All depends.

Thanks so much for providing even more information and context. I was also thinking about the potential for leaks from buyers that backed out of the deal, but my post was already very long, so I didn't want to blow it up even more lol

There are definitely a lot of factors that can result in leaks, and most companies try to mitigate that as much as possible. It's certainly possible that Sony has been in talks with publishers with the intent to buy, or lock down more than just "timed exclusivity" for some of their titles.

Apparently something is in the oven and may it just be some kind of a Game Pass agreement. If MS is actually buying Sega that would be another nail in the coffin for Sony. I don't mean this hyperbolic, but Sony missing out Bethesda games from now on already is a huge loss and hurts, but losing Sega and it's studios as well? Oh boy... Microsoft really is on some kind of a roll right now. If this turns out to be true getting a Xbox is a must if you don't want to miss out those games. I'm a huge Sega fan and thus I would need to get a Xbox and I'll say this while I've already preordered the PS5 and Xbox.

Waiting for the lottery results to see if I've snagged a ps5 for launch is killing me. Anyone else here not got a preorder in yet? Anyone to share my anxiety with?

Here's a doozy of a rumour for you: Metal Gear Solid (the PS1 classic) is being remade (again) and it's coming to PS5 and PC. This is according to YouTube channel RedGamingTech, which has been known to provide some accurate leaks in the past, although they specialise in hardware information rather than software.

Still, according to their source — a source that apparently has a 100 per cent track record up to this point — this supposed Metal Gear Solid revival is a full remake, not just some kind of port or remaster.

Obviously just a rumour at this point.

Two questions: 1) Why would I buy the Series S if I'm going to invest in an Xbox at all? I'd rather get the Series X, thus getting the best version of the new generation console over a "stop gap" budget console. If I'm in, I'm going all in.

2) What if I'm not personally invested in Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Dishonored or Wolfenstein, or any of the Bethesda published IPs?

You'd think at this point gamers would understand that people's taste in games vary. Not everyone is into the same things, or the same genres. It's not a matter of the quality of those games, simply personal preference. For example, I'm not a Call of Duty fan, and I'm also not a huge fan of MP games like Overwatch or Fortnite. Doesn't mean that those games are bad, they just aren't for me.

I think Elder Scrolls and Fallout are cool games, but they aren't really sitting atop my personal list of "Best games ever." For some gamers, they are. And for those gamers, I imagine getting an Xbox Series X for those titles has become mandatory. For me, personally, I can live without them. Doesn't mean I'm not going to get an Xbox Series X at some point, just that those games aren't the reasons why I would (unless, somehow, they turn out so amazing that I might rethink giving those franchises another shot). I never got into Doom and Wolfenstein, and at most, I've only sunk a few dozen hours into each Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. I just always lost interest in them after a while, and never came back to them. It's not that the games weren't cool, just that I wasn't as absorbed into the world as others.

Not all gamers view every IP in the same way. I love Final Fantasy and Uncharted, and God of War, and Silent Hill, but some other gamer may have no interest in those IPs whatsoever, so even if, say, Final Fantasy became Sony exclusive, it wouldn't really budge the needle for them, even if they owned a PlayStation console.

Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing IPs in the world, yet I have 0 interest in Gran Turismo. It's just not my thing. Sports games sell in the millions, but I've never purchased a sports game in my life, because I'm not interested in that genre. Looking at the sales of games like Wolfenstein, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls, it's clear to me that not every PlayStation or Xbox gamer has equal fascination with those IPs. If it was the case that every gamer loved the exact same games, well, every game would be selling 100 million+ units lifetime.

It's part of why all the doom and gloom seems so overblown.

The tl;dr is that gamers aren't a monolith. For some gamers, this acquisition will be problematic, because they will have to invest in another ecosystem to get access to those games from Zenimax that interest them. For other gamers, it doesn't matter, because those titles going to MS mean nothing to them and their specific gamer tastes. And for others still, it won't matter, because they are planning on owning both the PS5 and Xbox Series X anyway (or have a gaming PC), and will have the choice of playing whatever games interest them that release on those platforms.

The answer to 1 is that I agree with you, but then I think of my situation a few years back and I would appreciate the option if 200 moneys could make the difference. I'm sure I'm not alone. As for 2, that is certainly possible and I'm not assuming people who play games are a monolithic entity.

This was, however, the tipping point for me, as Zenimax are an intensely (not exclusively) single-player publisher, and I'm not sure some of the stuff that got greenlit there would get a pass in other places. I'm looking at Arkane and Machinegames. Also Tango for still sticking to their weird horror guns, which isn't something guaranteed to sell. That's the kind of thing that I value a lot.

I know this isn't where I'll find the most passionate fortnite/mp community, which is precisely why I asked in the first place. People don't come to this thread to discuss sports games or mp in general, they come because they've come to expect a certain kind of game from Sony. High budget, cinematic, immersive, etc. ans they want to discuss those. I see Zenimax much in the same light (on a very different scale of course).

I wanted to know how this affected other like-minded people and their more immediate reaction to this news. Other answers I've gotten have recontextualized the situation and given me different perspectives, which is what I wanted.

If reporters are gonna say that some random person has leaked information correctly before, just say what they have been right about to give us background why this could be a reliable source. It's like saying that Roberto has leaked information before and then not saying anything about all the wrong things he's said lol.

Even if Take Two wanted to sell, no way Microsoft and Google would sit back and let Sony buy them, unless it was done in complete secrecy, and that's not going to happen.

Making Dragon Quest exclusive would by itself guarantee at least a few million PS5s sold in japan, a market they'll likely struggle due to not being portable. Still I doubt Square would be up for grabs.

There is still plenty of Series S stock everywhere in germany, so the people on ERA saying "Only gaming enthusiasts care about 4K or a disc Drive" have been extremely wrong, since the X was sold out immediately.

So in the END perhaps Jim Ryan was right with his statement last Week. Will be interesting to see where it all lands.

I find very difficult to see a MGS remake because it would be so much different. Could be done, with MGSV playability for example not to feel outdated from the gameplay perspective, but would have to have many levels redesigned the it would be really risky to retain the identity.

I think is fair to say that Sony probably has been in conversations with companies for some time now, same as Microsoft, same as Facebook with their focus in the VR area, same as big publishers wanting to grow even more, Google, Amazon,...everyone knew that in any moment this process of consolidation could gain traction and you gotta be ready to push forward the deals that fit better your strategy.

In the last months we have seen Sony trying to buy Leyou, Microsoft, EA, Activision and Take Two interested in Warner, Facebook buying Sanzaru, Beat Games and RAD, now Microsoft buying Zenimax, all of this has lot of work behind and there is always way more conversations that the ones we discover.

For someone like me, that also love the business side of video games, exciting years ahead even tho I'm a bit afraid about how all of this could end.

It really was a unique and beautiful game, the art direction while not having aged perfectly was really charming when it released too. I'd love a remaster as well though sadly it seems like the game/IP has been forgotten about for a very long time. I do still have my disk as well, have quite a few PS3 games. I don't use it often but my PS3 is still hooked up to my TV, mainly use it as a bluray player though.

Loved Folklore so much! Allways wanted a sequel or a remaster to the game!! And yeah it seems to be forgotten and will never come back :(
It's so sad that Game Republic had to close its doors. I often wonder if Folklore would have done better if it released a little further along in the PS3's life cycle, when the install base matured more.

Honestly, I think the art direction holds up pretty well still! I think the stylized look of the main characters, and the "Jim Henson Creature Shop" feel of the Folks could scale up nicely. Really only some environmental textures would need touch ups. The game had a very fairy tale book look to it that I think it would be beautiful if remastered. It's definitely never going to happen, unfortunately :(
It's a really shame the studio was closed down :(
And i agree that if the game was released further + better marketing it could have been a success.

While i usually fail at most predictions i have, i think both xss and ps5de will be the less sold skus by a wide margin. Series S even worse. A key point is lack of disc drive, that puts of many ', not hardcore' players imo.

Just checked two major Spanish retailers and both still have series s in stock,

They all ordered the superior 1TB One S instead, they'll be surprised to receive it almost 2 months earlier than anybody else, lol.

I would be impressed with a MGS1 remake tbh.
The game did not aged well, plus it was made to be played from top down.
So good luck to who makes that remake.

I'd rather developers focus on new experiences instead of elaborate remakes, especially if said game has already been remade earlier. Demon's Souls is a border case (it looks so damn good so I'll accept a remake for a game I've played to death), but MGS... nah, probably wouldn't want it unless it looks absolutely mindblowing.

Honestly to do a remake of MGS at this point, you'd need to make an entirely new game. And at that point, why even bother doing MGS1 at all?

Like you can't remake it in the FOX Engine, Kojima's not gonna work on it, so what would be the point? Who would even develop it?

I hope to god they're not remaking MGS1 over. Do MGS 4 if anything. There's so many other things that would Sony could benefit from instead.
Like Legend of Dragoon!
