A few questions: do you want or expect PlayStation to continue promoting Deathloop and Ghostwire as in previous events? Do you think it would be a right move? I was under the impression that this collab was happening because those games needed the exposure and Bethesda alone couldn't do the job; now it's obviously not the case. Would you keep investing time and money on those, when there are internal projects and other timed-exclusives to promote?

And nonstop for years, let's be honest.

It'd be nice to talk about it.... and this thread would be a nice place to talk about it. But it's made unbearable every time MS does anything. Or even doesn't do anything. We haven't stopped talking about how they're doomed for years; talks are nothing but acquisitions and how MS is outmaneuvering them. When people want to talk about first party, it's drowned out completely because it's hard to keep up when we get page after page on the inner workings of Sony instead of their studios.

The acquisition of Bethesda is legitimately a loss for Sony because this stuff was coming to Xbox anyway, but it still has nothing to do with Sony's first party studios.

I saw Chuck795 Loudninja --R Pai Pai Master Rover_ get2sammyb Chris Metal bryanee AngelOFDeath Carmelozi either express exhaustion over it or try to change the subject, and maybe they have a different opinion, but my view is:

This isn't a Sony First Party Thread. It's a Sony Corporate Strategy thread most of the time as Sony First Party is drowned out. We should either rename the thread or make a separate one for fans of Sony Corp in general.

Yep, I'm out.
This is a thread about Sony's studios who are set to deliver probably the best first year in Sony history, on a console that's selling out everywhere no less, but that's not what people are talking about.

It's ridiculous, there is so much to be positive about.

Yup, losing more people to this silliness.

I have no problem with the acquisition talk but it's the low-effort incessant doomposting and the obvious cross-post ribbing from other communities with stuff like "MS should buy ____ to rub salt in the wound" and "big jim asleep at the wheel lol" mentalities . I personally feel the staff post in the last thread was ignored quite a bit yesterday but didn't have the energy to bother reporting much, just beefed up my ignore list.

I think if acquisition talk existed in moderation, it'd be so much easier. But it's hard to post on the thread for any length of time because it goes right back to, "Who should they buy," "What should Sony do since MS did [insert thing]," "Is Arrogant Sony back," "Sony's sleeping," and very little talk about the games from Playstation Studios.

I put up a few posts for Ghost of Tsushima that went nowhere here, but of course, "Sony's corporate strategies must evolve!" gets the most play.

Yikes.

btw. Sumo has like ~750 devs and basically no big-ish IPs. Too mediocre for me. Waste of money.
yeah idg people going for the low ball that would "please gamers/consumers"

we lost that narrative along time ago with even the press not even batting an eye about "anti consumer" acquisitions

why waste your money on not getting big I.Ps when your competitors are doing so?

MS is serious, you don't counter with fear of displeasing others

ARM wasn't publicly traded ...
Zenimax wasn't publicly traded...

well, ... let us dream...

ARM was owned by Softbank which is publicly traded.
ARM was an asset of the whole conglomerate and they still sold the division.

The only difference is that you will know if there's going to happen a takeover for a publicly traded company and a bidding war can happen, when the company is private you won't. If Zenimax was public and MS was interested, you could bet everything Tencent and Google would join the bidding war.

Why does it matter if they're publicly traded or not? They can still be bought.

The difference is that you can just buy about 40% from the company, and that is of course only possible if the majority of shareholders accepts that
To make any decisions for the company on your own you need around three quarters of the company.
So you would have to buy also a lot of shares from other shareholders, most big shareholders are holding around 10% on the company.
Of course you can always ask the board about making a decision.

Just noticed Playstation Twitter went dead silent after the Minecraft tweet. They are usually trigger happy with them.

Yes. All Sony executives and top managers of their studios have not Tweeted anything since the acquisition. I think there were many meetings until dawn yesterday;)

Sumo Digital only make sense if they use all the studios as a support/outsourcing but being based in the UK it's going to be very expensive having over 700 employees dedicated to outsourcing and support with full time salaries

Yes, ARM wasn't publicly traded it was owned by a company.
That publicly owned company made the decision to sell them.

Apologies if I've missed this conversation already (there's a lot to sift through in this thread!) but do we think we might get some TLOU2 Factions news before the PS5 launch?

They could make a Twisted Metal game, continue the Little Big Planet/Sackboy I.P, help with a Getaway remake with Sony London.

I don't think so. If they were it would've been at the last event which makes me believe the game is maybe early 2021 at the earliest.

Maybe via another event/video post launch though. UNLESS the game is PS4 bound in which case I can see a SoP before PS5 launch announcing such.

With their work on LBP3 and Sackboy, I wonder if they really dig them and it's more than a job (they seemed like a good fit during the 2014 conference when they demoed the game).

Side note on The Getaway: my local flea market has it sitting there in a movies store, and I think I may buy it just to see what it was like. I never did get it because it seemed to have some forward-looking ideas (serious and grounded story, no health bar/you heal over time) that were done not so well at the time (you have to lean for a while to heal). And despite being open-world, it was apparently quite linear, I think? Something about flashing lights to show you wear to go IIRC.

I'd still like to get a feel for it even if I just play it for a little bit.

Whatever Sony have left to announce before the november launch, I think they need to wait until the noisy hysterics die down a bit. Maybe a couple days at least?

Somewhat dumb question but will the ds4 be compatible with the ps5? Thinking about getting rid of all my ps4 stuff to have some spare for the ps5 release but really don't wanna sell my classic ps4 controller :(

I think Sony themselves will stay quiet for most of this TGS week & let the third parties make their announcements. TLOU2 Factions announcement on Outbreak Day will kick off a week full of Sony news on UI/BC etc I bet.

DS4 is only compatible for PS4 BC games

Recent events are directly related to Sony and first party studios. PlayStation went from larges to by far the smallest content creator in big 3 in last few years.
No mater how great the top studios are, Sony's biggest games sell 10-15m, not 40-50m+ and each studio produces at most 2 AAA games per generation, not to mention VR support with dedicated teams.
It is a legitimate concern and can be a good indicator to future outlook.
When people say Sony is going to be "fine" if they "continue what they do best", for Sony fine means expanding PlayStation business and increasing revenue from current state, any degree of stagnation or decreased growth trajectory let alone decreased sales will be alarming for their business and will raise huge concerns for investors.

I think the same and it frustrates me a lot because I wanted more news this week.

If only pre-orders would open in my country, that would be great but doesn't look like it'll happen any time soon.

With TGS this week I wonder if they will have anything planned for the PS5's JP launch. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't, 'cause it feels like that market is too far gone. Or maybe my infrequent visits to the MC threads have corroded my brain.

Would love to see Konami coming back, but i don't think that will happen.
The anniversary collections were a nice thing.
Yeah me too. Konami have great IPs in their vault and I don't see them doing nothing with.. Either they will start to create games as next-gen represents new opportunities, maybe not at AAA quality but at least with decent budget or they will let other studios using their IP, it seems like what Sony do with Silent Hill -if the rumors are true of course-.

They know every twitter response will be about buying studios or publishers so I don't think they'll post anything big this week lol

So, forgive me if it's a silly question but I see talk of how "Sony should show the UI" and, is it really that important at all ? I can barely remember them showing it for the PS4 prior to launch and even though I only got a PS4 for christmas 2014, the UI was a complete surprise to me, I had paid zero attention to that prior to buying it.

I highly doubt that anything besides Ghostwire and Deathloop are coming in the future, maybe there will be exceptions, but it's gonna be few.
It doesn't make sense, as I said, one of the reasons for this type of acquisition is to hurt the competition, I won't trust on Phil's goodwill on this one.

And about Bethesda's quality, I have to agree to an extent, everyone knows that their quality was in a decline, and if they are indeed changing NOTHING(like Phil and Todd are saying), I don't see why this is going change, but there aren't games like Bethesda games, as buggy as they are and as worse they are becoming(compared to the older games at least).

And then you have Arkane, ID software, Tango gameworks....these ones are big losses(or wins, depending on the POV).
I agree, I don't trust his goodwill, he's in the business to win. As for the quality, MS is stepping up to a whole new league of budgeting and project management. Bethesda has at LEAST three $100 million + projects, outside of Halo and maybe Gears sometimes, MS doesn't have many $100 million + projects.

It's quite funny that few months ago the spiderman DLC was an enormous anti-consumer practice and now half of the posts in this forum are about MS buying the whole games industry including Sony itself.

Yep. This is a buyers market now. War, as always, in a big industry. Not is the time to go big.
Yeah worst purchase ever lol
So true 😅
No I.Ps would make them a cheap buy
Yeah, but we are talking about "no IPs" and being a "mediocre dev" here ;P

You simply go and buy out the company. It costs more than a standard private-owned company, but still, just acquire them. Yes, it takes longer, you have to reach an agreement with the shareholders to sell, etc.
But in the end, simply buy the company and swallow it.
