This thread seems to be the ultimate example of the era-bubble.

don't worry I'm sure the people tasked with marketing campaigns for these billion dollar companies and products didn't stop to think if they should continue making commercials for a product that sold out. Probably never crossed their minds.

In Stockholm, Sweden they had airplanes painting the sky with the Playstation symbols on release day. Pretty cool.

Dublin, Ireland
Their marketing budget for this launch had to be pretty damn massive because they threw around enough dough to do shit like this around the world.

Which ironically seemed to have gone mostly unnoticed on Era.

A guy I know did the projections here in Dublin, they were pretty cool. Unfortunately with the pandemic, I don't think as many people got to see the outdoor projections as they might have.

Regardless of the fact that the PS5 was going to sell out anyway, they have created a fever pitch feeling around the console, it's about having those people want the console enough to wait for it to come into stock and not pick up an Xbox if they get the opportunity.

Complete waste of money.

A PS5 at launch will completely sell itself.

Start the massive ad campaign when you start getting massive supply.

I know it's traditional marketing awareness for that kind of spend but the people who spend $500 on a launch console were already very aware.

The mind share is a really big deal. The new systems being sold will add even more to it, as it will make the systems more desirable. This reminds me of the PS2 launch and the original Wii. Those 2 systems were sold out for months. I think the PS2 had stock issues, but for the wii there was just too much demand.

PS always goes big with the Marketing. Renaming and Rebranding the Underground must have cost a nice bit of pocket change. This type of marketing gets a lot of coverage and attention, even in the pandemic.

What? The point of marketing is to let potential buyers know what they're missing. Even if you can't buy one now, Sony want you to keep that interested in buying when the chance comes.

It's about awareness and buzz for people who will buy next year, the year after. About helping to establish PS5 in the wider mindset as the hot new console, the one to get etc. A certain amount of it is also post-sale buzz for those who have already bought.

The more expensive a product is, the more its marketing is about seeding non-immediate purchases. On the one hand you have cheap everyday products whose advertising may indeed be about reminding you to pick something up on your next trip to the grocery store. On the other you have products like cars, whose advertising is really a long-term awareness play rather than about an imminent purchase. PS5 isn't a car, but it's a relatively high-cost, rare purchase. The marketing for it is about planting seeds in consumers' minds and growing them over time, well in advance of purchase and after purchase too.

It's not. It's about mindshare and setting the tone for the gen

Would be more interested to see overall spending rather than just a small window before launch. Either way, both MSFT and Sony are in a really good place with demand right now.

This thread is a great exemple of Era users who don't understand anything about marketing.

Unless you have a product with a limited shelf life marketing is usually about building awareness. Advertising the PS5 now makes perfect sense, Sony know there's not enough machines out there but they want those people without one to feel like they're missing out on something big.

That the big problem from Xbox since Xbox One generation.

The marketing is simply poor. Especially in Europe

Nothing about Series S, Nothing about Game Pass, nothing about first party release.

Nintendo & Sony put lot money for ads. In france I see more ads in TV of Hyrule warriors than XSX ads.

"It will sell itself" would be the ultimate arrogant Sony lol

They are competing with 2 (3?) consoles, PC and streaming services from Amazon and Google.

I mean..yeah...in Singapore here, Sony singapore actually engaged some singapore popstars here (JJ Lin) to endorse and advertise the ps5 before launch and that garner tons of mainstream attention.

Also, PlayStation korea actually endorsed and sponsored the original 'plash speed 4' video that was originally just meant to be a sketch.

This.

It's almost like MS think word of mouth with gamepass is enough to sell it. I've seen little to nothing in the UK about the console, gamepass or anything other than that Twitter ad that keeps popping up in my feed.

All access is an amazing deal that should be doing wonders here, but instead barely anyone knows about it.

Havent seen a single ad here tho in the Netherlands tho. Not like a "pure" one. The things i saw was with COD and then the PS5 logo afterwards and AC Valhalla with the line "play it on the new xbox" afterwards with a picture of the new consoles.

I think Game Pass is a reason for that, it's probably 1 of the biggest positive from the corporation's perspective, a service like it advertises the games, so you could probably cut a pretty significant amount off your marketing budget the more established it is.
MS still need to get bette at marketing elsewhere though, especially with Nintendo finally fully cracking Europe and Sony having huge growth in emerging markets in the Middle East and South-East Asia. I've seen more Samsung advertising Xbox, than Xbox itself.

Yup, not just in big cities like london, even a small island state like singapore here, Sony sponsored a light show in the biggest casino in Singapore to celebrate the launch.

I've seen ads for PS5 in Japan, I could not tell you it was a PS5 ad though unless I saw the end/on youtube before hand though. Sony is weird as heck with their ads.

I imagine a fair chunk of their marketing spend would have been on Halo ads. Halo in the past has normally had a very large TV ad presence.

Either way, I don't think it's unexpected for Sony to outspend them heavily on marketing. PlayStation has always had a huge marketing presence in Europe, e.g. champions league sponsor/ads.

DAMN! PlayStation paid must have paid a lot to advertise in Westworld.

All jokes aside. Singapore (Alpha+) is just a notch below London (Alpha++) in terms of global classification of cities. New York being the only other Alpha ++. Not surprised they went all out there as well. Singapore is a such a beautiful city state. Curious what type of marketing stunts Sony planned out in other regions of the world now.

Imagine if they had spent that money on ps1 - 2 - 3 bc ! Okay they might not have gotten all the way there with all the consoles but still. As a playstation player since 1996 I'm just disappointed that it's a lot of flash and less substance lately than what I'm used to seeing from them.

Marketing builds awareness, consideration, purchasing intent and advocacy. You do this throughout the year, with or without stock and especially during new product launches. PlayStation is looking to be as ubiquitous as the terms "Google" and "Amazon" and "Apple" in the gaming industry. That brand power alone can sell your products without games and overshadow any deficiencies.

This all looks super fucking baller. Sony trying to sell their product to the world like "You don't just want this... You need this injected in your veins NOW!" type.

On UK TV during launch day they had booked out entire ad breaks exclusively for PlayStation game ads.

I wouldn't call having three well-received new games out at launch as having little substance. That's more than any previous PS launch has had.

Not to mention, giving 22 games to play; Astro's Playroom, Bugsnax, and the Plus Collection. Those are an additional cost to them as well.

I saw the standard PS5 one and the CG miles morales one.

I don't understand why they have had a CG TLOUc, GOT and MM ad when the in game footage is already so good
