I wonder how much of this you could count as a backlash to the poor emulation, the PAL games, etc.....

If it were a solid AF emulation device, would it have sold much better? Word of mouth does matter a lot, I guess, but it also might just be that nostalgia for the PS1 isn't quite what it is for classic Nintendo consoles.
Had they done the less stupid thing, and stuck a PS TV in a PS1 case with either an actual selection of games or access to PSN, I'd have bought one in a heartbeat.

Instead I just point and laugh.

I think the long and short is that the selection of games on it is trash and missing too many of the classics people would want. No Crash. No Spyro. No Gran Turismo. No Tony Hawk. No Tomb Raider. All huge franchises that were emblematic of the PS1 and completely absent here.

Super disappointed since this was finally going to be my first PS console. Start right at the beginning. I still want one, but I'm waiting for a $30 or less deal.

Given that i have the tools and knowledge to hack the PS classic(really is pretty easy in my experience hacking the NES/Snes classic) to somewhat make something out of the disappointment of a product this has proven to be. That actually is within the range for me to bite separately. I would choose the classic in my rare instance.

I guess Nintendo games tend to age better

b3i6e14.gif
i mean NES classic sold more in december 2018, two years after launch, than PS classic in its launch month.

Gonna take that 2nd controller all day every day

Hacking the PS sounds cool and all, but they'll be even cheaper sooner than later.

the poor software lineup and using PAL versions of most of the games are what really killed this product.

maybe 20%. the general audience wouldn't have much of an idea about those. it was mostly the game selection and just not being an appealing product.

I think you both have a point about game selection.

With NES and SNES Classics you got the heart of the library, no doubt.

Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, too many timeless games. And the N64 Classic is gonna go crazy
i feel like 3D games, specially early 3D games, just haven't aged well. the timeless look of pixel art classics like yoshi's island or super metroid just doesn't age, but mario 64 or OoT won't look that nice on a TV screen. i actually think that's the reason why nintendo isn't too quick to put out a N64 classic, they're not too sure how well it'll be received. it will of course sell a fuckton more than PS classic, but maybe they don't want people to see those early 3D games, warts and all, on their high res TVs.

I'd take the DS4. And I'm not saying this to be edgy, I'm serious

Even though I have two DS4s (one for my PS4 and one for my PC) - I would take a third DS4 over the crappy PS1 classic

They sold them for many years on an HD console though, and at a much worse value than what a N64 classic will be.

Anyone know where the lowest US price for one of these is? With bleemcast it seems like a fun thing to have at the right price.

I remember a Gamestop employee telling me they had pre-orders and it was going to sell out even faster than the NES Classic.

I was tempted but couldn't pull the trigger without a full game catalog. Dodged a bullet there.

Same. Gamestop actually cancelled my preorder, man am I glad I held out, definitely going to get it when it's cheap enough in the US. This defintely is a good sign that's going to happen sooner rather than later.

Is it even all that good after its hacked? If the base emulator is bad at emulating the ps games already does hacking it unlock and more power?

There's a port of Retroarch which basically updates the emulator and adds support for dozens of consoles.

Because the emulator itself isn't bad, it's just the newest non-Retroarch build available and Sony just used that instead of developing one in-house.

I'm waiting to get one at about 30 bucks to hack it and make it useful.

But yes, this thing was an epic flop. I'm amazed the discounts haven't gone deeper yet here in the States.

I personally havent had any performance problems, but I guess that depends on the sensitivity of the person.
The hacks go pretty deep now, IIRC, you can even install other emulators.

Having like 200+ psx games on one little psx looking box with psx controllers is a neat novelty. especially with how portable it is.

Congrats Sony, your lazy rushed cash grab on something Nintendo started has failed spectacularly. Who could've seen that coming.

The thing about buying this at 30 dollars CAD is that you still have to deal with the crappy original PS1 controller.

Hot damn. Besides something like Battleborn this has to be the biggest flop of the generation. Hell I might not be giving that game enough credit.

Also I'll take the controller.

Its the best little box that emulates PS1 games and also looks like a little PS1.

There are a bunch of better alternatives out there if you want a little box that emulates PS1 games and doesn't look like a little PS1.

PS Classic sucks real bad out of the box, but the modding is so easy to do and makes it so good that it's well worth getting if it's not gonna cost you anything with this deal. I've got one with ~100 games loaded onto it and it's been so handy I've started ebaying all of my shitty old PAL PS1 discs.

Fuck Sony for making it so shitty but the device itself is pretty good when you hack it (It's a pretty painless method too). I'd get the PS Classic tbh.

Agree, Bleemsync has made it a really fantastic machine. I'm still trying to get a decent analogue stick solution working on it though so I can make proper use of the N64 and PSP emulators.

Controller.

Gotta wait for that sweet Greatest Hits $19.99 branding for a Classic.

And then still not care.

No way is it the biggest flop of the generation. It's not the best but at least you can play some good games on it. But really, it's just a collectors item, miniature PlayStation and that's about all the good I can say about it.

then i wonder what the reason is. trying to only offer retro games through NSO subscriptions? maybe two n64 controllers (which will for sure be more expensive to produce than NES and SNES controllers) making the package not as profitable at low prices?

Are there any cases of people trying to scalp these things and getting stuck with the product? I remember this happening with the Wii U.

I can only speak for myself, but if it had good/great emulation and a slightly better selection of games (nor PAL bullshit) I wouldn't have canceled my pre-order. With those improvements I think the word of mouth would have been much better (for example the Giant Bomb Quick Look was the final nail in the coffin for me) and it would have sold much better, as it was the lack of hype among the target audience (who were actually informed) meant it was DOA.

I'm still baffled by many of the decisions with this device. It doesn't feel like something that anyone who works for the core Playstation brand had anything to do with.

Well deserved. Even modded the PSC isn't a great purchase. Mine has been turned on exactly once, and at this point only serves as an expensive decoration.

I'll definitely grab a classic once it hits like the $20-25 price point.
But yeah, as everyone else has said. Once the list of games and the emulation came out, it was a done deal for the thing. It was easy to tell that this was more chasing trends than trying to be a love letter to the system and its history. The best thing to come out of the system was the commercial for it.

I'll never forgive the person who went "Rainbow Six has got to be on there"

The full sentence was actually "Cut Dino Crisis because no one cares about that... Rainbow Six has got to be on there"

PS Classic for me.

I went with a N64 instead of a PS1 back in the day. I know I missed a lot of games that I should have played but it's been so many years now and I have no nostalgia pushing me and if I go back to that time on my own, I'm playing N64 games I used to own. If I had a PS Classic I'd feel obligated to play it and I'd finally get to play those games.

I live by myself and my friends have PS4s so I'd get like zero use from another DS4.

Thats what happens when you use the good old PSBR "Make the same thing Nintendo did, but like...worse" approach
