When you all say PS5's rest mode is borked, do you mean it's unsafe to put the console into rest mode in the middle of a game, or that it's unsafe to use rest mode period, that it crashes the console entirely or something?
There's a few things that contribute to this and it starts from when the console was released:
Problems with games: Miles Morales was crashing at launch, it was fixed in a patch. Returnal also has crashing issues which are still being patched (as per the notes for the upcoming patch). Some of these manifest during normal operation as well as when using rest mode.
USB Storage: The PS5 appears to be very particular as to what USB storage you can use with it. Certain chipsets were basically unusable in rest mode, and there's been several stability patches released improving external storage. This may still be an issue, I've not kept a close eye on it.
Console issues: Some folks continue to have issues with multiple games and don't use external storage. It's not clear if these are faults with their console or they're an edge case and there are still issues with the OS that most of us aren't seeing.
In pretty much all scenarios the worst case was your console restarted in safe mode and had to repair its database. I
think there was one case of a console bricking but it was so long ago and my hazy recollection is that it was an isolated case.
I don't have any personal anecdote to add because I stopped using Rest mode as soon as the USB storage issue was identified. There's been a couple times I've had to keep playing to get to an appropriate place to stop playing but I've mostly had a really good time powering the console down fully as it powers up from cold in less than 30 seconds.
