I still can't think any of that sounds like it was a good idea, but I certainly miss the few months I spent in Japan in college and am a little jealous of that amount of constant dedication/effort put into achieving what they wanted. So... I guess good job on that much, huh.

I knew he was struggling from what he mentioned in Discord, but I had no idea it was like that. I thought he was joking about being deported and the part about not going to Japanese language school and doing uber eats for a while. 25,000 yen a month in Tokyo is hella cheap. Lost 25kg. Wow.
It kinda sounded dire for a while, but glad everything worked out.

Damn that kind of dedication and suffering of hardships is definitely praise worthy.

If dude happens to be an SNK fan and feels qualified for game dev job at any point tell him I can try to get him a chance!

My entry points into Japan and the industry were a cake walk in comparison!

Compared to what I have to do to get in Japan next year, that was hard af.

Please people, do not follow him like that, have a good plan and support system to get there, or to move to any country with little to no language knowledge. People romanticize those hardships, but they're not worthy at all.

I did something comparable to OP's original plan, also not a native speaker, so reading through the first pages was kinda weird to see everyone so negative. I do understand though. But it's really not that improbable, although I'm really happy I went with some money to last me for a while.
Shit is doable, just plan it out real well and know what you can accept.

I just moved to Korea in February. I had a job lined up and contract signed, my housing taken care of and paid for and someone I work with charged with looking after me some.

It has still been the craziest, most stressful time of my life even if a lot of fun. I had to learn to deal with a new culture, new language, being the very-obvious-looking foreigner and all the other madness that comes with being in such a radically different place.

I wouldn't recommend doing what you're thinking of doing, OP. Have a bit of a firmer plan.

OP already did it and seems to be succeeding. This thread is years old.

Jesus, there is no way I could live in that room it'd break me. I'd just feel so confined and cramped all of the time.

I had no idea he made thread about the decision to move to japan, I met with him back in Nov 2019 when I was going to japan for holiday and since we play and talk about the same hobbies I thought I'll met up with him and others from ERA.

Really fun person to hang around with.

I have to commend the resilience. 25 kg lost due. But I'm glad he found proper footing now. Hope he has a much larger apartment now haha.

It's been a little wild, and full memes, hearing about just the few antics of his on discord that he's shared. Definitely a headscratcher

Yeah I'm sure we've chided him on this more than once too.

Wow! Who knew?

I'm impressed I can't imagine doing that! I've only just got over culture shock and stopped waking up every morning like "where am I and what the hell am I doing".

edit: I'm not sure if I could endure what OP endured to get there, though. I like living in Korea a lot and would probably do the same thing I'm doing now in Japan at some point but I'm not so into the idea of either country I would put up with such ardour.

Seems like it was extremely reckless to go with so little savings instead of waiting a bit longer, but I'm glad it worked out in the end.

Things also seem to be improving which is definitely good, particularly considering Corona situation.

What kind of research job did he find?

Reading all of that it kind of goes to show how important it is to actually have plan laid out if you plan to do a big move, especially if you were planning to hop to aother country. Glad things seem to be finally working out.

Man, reading some replies from the first page, many people telling him not to do it, i get what they are saying but sometimes i wonder what would be of me if i just followed that voice in my head telling me to do something, instead of going for the "safest" option in life.

In the end it doesn't matter how many things you got, or if you did what everybody considers normal, but what makes you happy.

Im glad OP is doing ok, and if he can read this, please post more videos about your life there.

I mean, the original plan presented by OP was a disaster waiting to happen. Only after the initial negative feedback did OP come up with a better plan that's more feasible, and they still faced a lot of hardship with that plan. So feedback is important.

Mad props for actually doing it. That story with him getting three jobs [and the 2 x 2 room, wtf] is absolutely wild.

Am I missing something? Why was OP banned?

For wanting to move to Japan?
... If only that was all it was.
