Since Onward is coming out later this week, thought it would be a good time to review these 2 animation titans last 10 years and figure out who you think had the stronger output for the last decade.

Here's a visual aid to show all the films the companies have released during the last decade.

Pixar:

Fun Factoids:
  • Toy Story 3 and Frozen were the highest grossing films of their respective years (2010 and 2013)
  • 7 films have grossed over 1 Billion Dollars, Toy Story 3, Frozen, Finding Dory, Zootopia, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4 and Frozen II.
  • Frozen II is the highest grossing animated movie of all time (Unless you count The Lion King 2019)
  • The highest rated Pixar Movie on Rotten Tomatoes from the decade is a tie with Toy Story 3 and Inside Out at 98%. The highest rated Walt Disney Animated Studios Movie on Rotten Tomatoes from the decade is Zootopia at 98%
  • The highest rated Pixar Movie on Metacritic from the decade is Inside Out at 94. The highest rated Walt Disney Animated Studios Movie on Metacritic from the decade is Moana at 81
  • Pixar has won the Animated Award for Best Animated Feature 5 times this decade (Toy Story 3, Brave, Inside Out, Coco, Toy Story 4)
  • Walt Disney Animation Studios has won the Animated Award for Best Animated Feature 3 times this decade (Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia
  • Pixar has made 7 Sequels this decade (Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Monsters University, Finding Dory, Cars 3, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4)
  • Walt Disney Animation Studios has made 2 Sequels this decade (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen II). 3 Sequels if you count Winnie the Pooh.
  • Cars 2 is the only "Rotten" film on the list. Cars 2 and Cars 3 are the only films with a "Mixed" metascore.
I will save my full analysis between the 2 for later on, as posting it upfront may result in some bias with the results.

If there is another animation studio that you think had stronger output this whole decade combined than ever of these two, please post about it as well. I feel you can make a very solid case for a company like Laika, but will need a lot of explaining if you put down a company like Illumination.

I haven't seen all of those films, but I think I've liked Disney more out of those that I've actually watched.

Jesus, just looking at that line up, Pixar's best days are really behind them, aren't they?
Only Coco, Inside Out, and parts of Toy Story 4 made me feel like I was watching a Pixar Movie. All the other ones, you could've told me it was a Disney movie, and I wouldnt' doubt it.

As for Disney, they play it safe, too safe... but that also means their worst movies are never really that bad so...
I'm torn, but I give it to Disney. At least they didn't sink as much...

Disney has been much more consistent, but Pixar had a few individual standouts.

Stealth best Disney movie Tangled breaks the tie in favor of Disney for me.

It's a close one. Which sadly speaks to Pixar's downfall from being an unimpeachable studio (and WDFA's rise to a premier CGI studio).

If I average out their output Disney wins because Pixar's lows are so fucking low.

Hmmm... Disney was more consistent but Pixar had higher highs and lower lows. Tough choice

It's impossible for me to go against Wreck It Ralph and Moana, so Disney.

Inside Out is literally the only Pixar movie on that list that I ever rewatched. Rest were meh for me.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. Weird. I'd give it to Disney, handily, as much as I love the Toy Stories, Coco, and Cars 3.

Pixar has lower lows, but i think they still win with the trio of Toy Story 3, Inside Out, and Coco
the only disney movie that reaches pixar highs is moana. the rest are more consistently good, but not amazing

I'm gonna give it to Pixar, but being real the output from both have been pretty fuckin' weak.

Coco and Toy Story 3 are the only things even relatively close to Tangled, Frozen, and Moana imo

Cars 3 had the best teaser though

Disney's is more consistent for me and the fact that they made Moana makes it a no brainer. I legit forgot about the good dinosaur, holy fuck that truly is a forgettable movie.

I'd say Disney, but Inside Out and Coco are still some of the best Pixar movies. Frozen/2, Tangled, Moana, and Zootopia are stellar movies that I truly think rival (and even surpass) the output from the renaissance era.

For me it's basically Moana and Tangled vs TS3/4, Inside Out and Coco so pixar wins

Pixar for sure. Coco, Toy Story 3-4, and Inside Out are far and away the best movies listed from either company. Zootopia and BH6 are solid though

Yeah, WDA takes it this decade. That said, Pixar's animated short game is still on point. Lava and Bao were probably better than almost all their features this past decade.

Disney probably has the better average.

But I value the best more so Pixar wins for me. TS3, Coco and Inside Out are the best 3 movies out of everything by both studios.

Disney and it isn't even a close one for me. Besides Winnie, I've watched all the Disney movies in theatre, and enjoyed all of them. For Pixar I've seen Toy Story 3, MU, Brave, and the Incredibles 2. Did not like Toy Story 3 so I passed in the 4th one; I enjoyed Finding Nemo, but the sequel never really drew me in enough to want to see it; don't care for the Cars franchise at all; Inside Out and Coco I've heard good things about, and I'll probably watch the latter some time; and until now I had totally forgotten about the Good Dinosaur.

Easily disney. I enjoyed Picard output but it's like Picard talent from the previous decade moved over to Disney.

I'm gonna give it to Pixar, but being real the output from both have been pretty fuckin' weak.

If Disney and Pixar's outputs are weak, then what are Dreamworks, Illumination, Blue Sky, etc.?

With the exception of the occasional Laika film, Disney and Pixar are still the top of animated theatrical releases.

Though I think most of the best stuff in animation exists on streaming/tv right now.

The very fact that it's a question is a sad comment on Pixar's decline. They're both ultimately pretty mediocre overall though I still think Pixar comes out on top with toy story 3 and incredibles 2

Disney takes this pretty handily for me, on the Pixar side I'd say TS3, TS4 and Monsters University stood out to me.

I absolutely adore Wreck-it Ralph, BH6, Moana and Zootopia.

This is tough. Both have incredible highs and mostly manage to avoid lows. Disney was more consistent. I also slightly prefer their highs the past decade (Tangled, Moana) to Pixar's (Inside Out, Coco). I think they also had the lower low, though. Neither Frozen II or Cars 2 are very good, but I at least understand what Cars 2 is trying to do. All that being said, I think I have to give the edge to Disney. They also had the best short the past decade with Get A Horse.

Kind of surprised I'd answer this way, but Disney.

Pixar has TS3/4, Inside Out and Coco going for them. I also liked Incredibles 2 a lot when I saw it.

I would consider just about every Disney movie up there a classic though. Would maybe exclude Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Big Hero 6 from that sentiment.

Disney by a mile. The Toy Storys and The Incredibles 2 are all Pixar had while Disney had a bunch of great stuff.

Toy Story 3/4 were all I really cared for from Pixar that decade (Inside Out was okay I guess too, the rest I didn't think were amazing/didn't see), while Disney seemed to do much better overall.

While I think they are good fun, nothing on Disney side comes close to something like Toy Story 3, Inside Out or Coco, so Pixar (even though 10's Pixar output also doesn't come close to 00's Pixar).

Pixar:
+ Toy Story 3
+ Toy Story 4
+ Coco
+ Inside Out
- Cars 2
- The Good Dinosaur

Disney:
+ Tangled
+ Winnie the Pooh
+ Zootopia
+ Moana
- Frozen II

While both had quite a bit of mediocre films, the only outright bad film of the Disney bunch would be Frozen II. Even then, it's not Cars 2 or Good Dinosaur bad. Saying that, nothing Disney made has reached Toy Story 3 levels. It's really hard to say, but I'll give it to Disney on this one solely due to not being responsible for the trashfire that is Cars 2.

Really tough, because some of those Pixar movies are really good. I particularly liked Cars 3 as a proper sequel to the first.

But WDAS wins it for Zootopia and BH6 for me.

Pixar has only made 2 good movies in the 2010s (Inside out and Coco) while Disney has been incredibly consistent with a few standouts. Easy Disney win.

Disney by far.

When I look at the Pixar output, the only two I have fully enjoyed were Inside Out and to a lesser extent Coco.

If you were chosen to erase one of the studios' output for the 2010s and would only have access to the other, I think I would choose to keep Pixar simply for Toy Story 3 and Inside Out. Toy Story 3 is the greatest animated movie of all time.

Zootopia
Inside out
TS3
Moana
Coco
Wreck it Ralph

Rest are forgettable. Kind of hard to choose since they're about the same so I'll just go for other as a tie.

That's an easy choice

Pixar has some lows but Zootopia is the only Disney movie that might be in Pixars league (maybe Moana).

And surely nothing Disney comes close to Toy Story 3 and Inside Out.
