A unique piano which was treasured by the Canadian virtuoso Angela Hewitt as her "best friend" was broken beyond repair when it was dropped by specialist instrument movers.

The expensive accident happened late last month after Hewitt finished recording Beethoven's piano variations at a studio in Berlin. She said it left her in such shock that it took her 10 days before she could announce the news to her followers.

In a Facebook post Hewitt said her F278 Fazioli, the only one in the world fitted with four pedals, and worth at least £150,000, was "kaputt". She said: "I hope my piano will be happy in piano heaven."

Specialist instrument movers? No way they're ever getting hired to move something valuable again.

I'm going to assume that a specialist piano mover is going to have insurance for any damage caused? Sucks that this is an irreplaceable instrument though.

Don't think that mover is going to enjoy the negative publicity here, but at the same time...

Doubt it'll have major repercussions for the shipping company (and it shouldn't). It seems to be their first big write-off in 35 years. No company is gonna have a 100% record.

And they insured it properly, so she'll get her money back. And the creator of the piano is still around and making pianos. Hopefully she finds one that connects with her again.

Shit happens, that's what insurance is for. Pianos are a pain in the ass to move, even for the specialty companies.

Oddly, grand pianos tend not to be that expensive relative to other classical instruments. Losing an instrument is upsetting, but $150k isn't a huge outlay for a classical instrument in the world of virtuosos.

Never had anything of much value moved. The most expensive was a washer that got its paint stripped to hell and back trying to get it out of a basement

Pretty upset that there's no pictures of a broken £150,000 piano in the article tbh

If I were her, I would at least salvage the keys and get them installed on a new one so the feeling is familiar. That sucks

I moved a couple of years ago and not only did the movers break a bunch of my furniture but once I got settled I realized that they'd stolen a box full of coins my grandfather spent most of his life collecting and had given to me 😫

I blamed myself for not putting them in my car though.

"What kind of music does it play?"

"Mostly baroque."

Boooooooo!!!!

I mean sure, but also reputation. Maybe not in the long term (unless it happens again) but certainly in the near term people are gonna do their research and see they had an accident and maybe look elsewhere.
How many specialty moving outfits do you think are out there that can handle a $200,000 half ton piano?

Oh I had a speciality firm doing it with my grand piano. Three guys came and they carried it to the third floor. I think it cost around 500 euros (it was included when i bought the piano. The piano cost 15000 though.)i have to say I was madly impressed.
