Specialist instrument movers? No way they're ever getting hired to move something valuable again.
That's rough - no legal recourse for her to claim damages?

Forgive me if I'm being presumptuous but would not the selling point of a "specialist" mover be to not fuck up stuff that regular movers might fuck up.
Good stuff, though obviously not directly replaceable hopefully can go some way toward a new unique one to treasure.
Doubt it'll have major repercussions for the shipping company (and it shouldn't). It seems to be their first big write-off in 35 years. No company is gonna have a 100% record.
And they insured it properly, so she'll get her money back. And the creator of the piano is still around and making pianos. Hopefully she finds one that connects with her again.

Accidents happen even to specialists, that's what insurance is for.
Oddly, grand pianos tend not to be that expensive relative to other classical instruments. Losing an instrument is upsetting, but $150k isn't a huge outlay for a classical instrument in the world of virtuosos.
150000 is a lot but many grand pianos go up to that number and more. cheap ones of course can be bought for far less.

I mean sure, but also reputation. Maybe not in the long term (unless it happens again) but certainly in the near term people are gonna do their research and see they had an accident and maybe look elsewhere.
If I were her, I would at least salvage the keys and get them installed on a new one so the feeling is familiar. That sucks
I moved a couple of years ago and not only did the movers break a bunch of my furniture but once I got settled I realized that they'd stolen a box full of coins my grandfather spent most of his life collecting and had given to me 😫

How many specialty moving outfits do you think are out there that can handle a $200,000 half ton piano?
Oh I had a speciality firm doing it with my grand piano. Three guys came and they carried it to the third floor. I think it cost around 500 euros (it was included when i bought the piano. The piano cost 15000 though.)i have to say I was madly impressed.
