What is Phantasy Star Online 2?

Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free to play MMOARPG developed and published by Sega and originally released in 2012 for PC in Japan. Over the next 8 years, the game would receive ports to the PS Vita (2013), PS4 (2016), and a streaming only release for the Nintendo Switch (2018), however not one of these versions, including the original, would see an official release outside of Asia. That was until E3 2019 when Microsoft and Sega announced they would be bringing the game outside of Asia for the first time and to North America via Xbox One and W10 in 2020.

How can I get in the Beta?

After downloading and installing you can sign up for closed beta access in the "Insider Content" submenu by selecting "Phantasy Star Online 2 Closed Beta Test" and applying. If accepted, the game will appear with the option to view in store in the same section when pre-loading becomes available, click tat option to be taken to its store page and select install. You will receive a message from Xbox Live when the beta begins. Keep in mind that although you can download the insider app and register on W10, the closed beta is only available on Xbox.

70 gigs? Jesus. It's a good thing I finally got around to finishing all the Halo games this weekend to clear off hard drive space.

Thanks. Can't wait for this. Sucks though as I work this weekend so I'll miss some of the urgent quests.

I'm still not really believing this is real - been waiting for this to come to the West forever.

Very excited for the Dreamcast cosmetic + that progress carries over to the full game.

What race/class is everyone playing?

If they let us have 3 characters like the JP version, I plan to make a just for fun newarl fighter/summoner, and a min maxed caseal braver/ranger

So how is this gonna work? I assume we have to make Sega PSO2 accounts just like the JP version. Do we have to do that via the xbox browser or something?

OP should probably mention this. This gets asked a lot.

As far as we know no, you won't be making a Sega ID, just need an Xbox Live account like PSU did.

No idea - need to play with character creation & weapon choices a bit. Robot, man and lady all sound potentially cool.

I don't want to cast magic, so I just need to see if melee feels weighty / shooting feels good.

Do we know with how many episodes it will launch?

We do not.

Speculation on the PSO2 subreddit is that since the game has group chat and that feature wasn't implemented until episode 6, that we should at least be that far along. However, there is a possibility content could be gated and introduced to the NA audience part by part.

No one has gotten a message yet afaik, shouldn't recieve a message until it starts.

Hope you fellas enjoy.
I've dedicated over 3000 hours to PSO2 since launch in July 2012.
My very first live streams on Twitch were of the Closed Alpha in January of that year.
There's a lot to get into with the game, and I'm happy for so many people to FINALLY get a chance to play it in earnest.

Thanks - any tips for someone who wants to shoot rifles and swing a big sword / punch people real hard?

I am thinking Ranger / Hunter or Fighter. Not really interested in min maxing, just a versatile character I can have fun with depending on my mood (ranged or melee).

Also, I know MAGs need to be built thoughtfully so you don't need respec. How do you suggest leveling that up?

The closed beta is around 70GB, so presumably most
Thanks for that, now the only question is whether I will play a bouncer again, or if I try something new...

If you want to be both a ranged and a melee character, braver has a skill which converts MAG dex into ranged and physical damage, and they can naturally use bows and katanas. Katanas are great at mobbing, and bows do huge single target damage.

If you want to use guns and a big swords, you'll probably want to be ranger/hunter (not hunter/ranger, mind you). You'll mainly be using machine guns and launchers, but you can equip a multi class sword and just have fun with it.
