Legit. A pso2 with the core of what makes the original good but all the annoying stuff redesigned with what they've learned has the potential to be a goat.

I think this is an overhaul that's aiming to reboot PSO2 so new players join in and Sega can shake off any systems that they deem unnecessary or outdated. I see it as PSO3 in everything but name. The name and update path - if it does ends up being an update and not a separate client - is probably a decision made to keep the same player base engaged and avoid losing them by requiring moving over to a sequel/new client.

I just wonder if they'll keep a version of the existing PSO2 around or if it will be deleted from existence and replaced by New Genesis.

I got 14k+ hours on pso2 jp and am extremely well versed in its mechanics. This is what i noticed:

-Day night cycling exists which could also suggest beats from PSO1 is back as a measurement of time, but could just be simple day and night cycling.

-In the video the weapons you can find being used or in the cgi are: sword, rod, assault rifle, twin daggers, knuckles, wand, twin machineguns, and jet boots? (slightly unsure but appears to be doing vinto gigue at :54 https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=54) Edit: This is probably just backhand smash even though its more dramatic with a kick she also attacks with the back of her fist and you can see fists on her back as she dashes in.

- The character is not using a class that exists currently. He is able to use rod, sword, and assault rifle on the fly and its not just editing as the cg also shows him doing it and the cooldowns on the video show that some sequences happen in the same area. It's possible classes will be reworked on how weapons are being used. This could also be why some successor traits are built into other weapons now.

- While using a sword, the main character steps an attack and does what appears to be a counter normal similar to hero

- The laser https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=75 is not a wand ET move it's helix proi. It's likely not a placeholder icon or anything because if you notice you dont see a mag anywhere. Mags could be different here and photon blasts seem reworked to be powerful personal attacks or mags are just represented differently and still exist somewhere.

-Elemental Weakness is back

- Damage numbers are way lower even for the low lvs they have. tutorial Damage on current pso2 with a lv 1 character can hit over 300 damage where here you hit single and double digits a lot and rarely go past 100. Helix proi was doing 200ish damage a hit which means that photon blasts are very strong here almost like compound attack level.

-Single party has a max of 4 players but the field they are in seemingly has a cap of 8 players as the icon in the top right changes to orange when 8 players are fighting the Didal Sword.

-The 8 player cap suggests this area likely is a free field that has been reworked and expanded into a huge area. I speculate that multiple kinds of areas like ruins, enchanted forest, and naverious have been reworked into one giant zone to achieve this. You can see what appears to be a sign post https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=31 which indicates that there might be several points of interests to travel to.

- https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=18 the blue rectangle icon near the water could mean fishing and gathering is back, but could also be for something else. Other green icons are around on the ground as well which are reminiscent of mining points but that's just speculation.

-It appears some PA's are skills with cooldowns now. If you look at diffuse shell here: https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=82 it doesnt take any pp and after its used you see a sparkle as its consumed and it is now greyed out. This could mean certain pas are now repurposed as weapon skills now forcing you to use other pas. It's also very strong if you compare its damage to other pas and moves.

Edit: It appears that the diffuse shell actually builds up over time based upon the damage you do to the enemy which you can see here: https://youtu.be/8iR5IKhomK4?t=72 once you watch the back pallet youll see once the piercing shell hits the diffuse shell use bar builds up a bit here.

Here's some various pas from the old game:
https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=52 - twister fall
https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=71 - piercing shell
https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=71 - rising edge
https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=74 - rafoie? (foie is on pallet but they already pressed something else before showing it and foie usually travels)
https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=77 - Edit: While I thought this was satellie cannon it appears to be another photon blast that looks like satellite cannon.
https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=82 - diffuse shell
https://youtu.be/-k7MzIcPC8M?t=86 - Edit: After watching again it looks like a weapon action for rifle that consumes no pp and is used for attack and avoiding at the same time. Its reminiscent of the parallel and impact sliders, but it's just a weapon action of sorts now.

Can we expect a North American Switch release? I thought that PSO2 just had a timed console exclusivity with Xbox and that Playstation and Switch would get a NA release eventually. Is this update extending the timed exclusivity in NA?

It's possible, but people are thinking it will hit Steam before the other consoles. The Switch version in Japan is a cloud-based version, so an NA port would be a lot of work for the NA branch. SEGA doesn't have that kind of infrastructure here, so that's why they're using MS' servers. I just don't see a Switch version getting hashed out because of the entanglements, but I can see a PS4 version early next year.

OK than I guess I'm not playing the current version of PSO2 anymore I'll wait for this version to come out on PC.

The "weird fan work around" is pretty easy to set up and once it is it's just a basic launcher that handles all updates and things.

Don't miss out dude, just go here https://na.arks-layer.com/ and follow the instructions. You basically just download a launcher that does everything for you. It's super easy and works like a charm.

So I've looked into it and yeah it's not that hard but I'm still gonna wait until this update launches. Starting an MMO is a lot and there's too many games/too little time. Looking forward to this though!

So our characters looks, cosmetics, weapons, mag evolutions, and units will also transfer over. SC and AC as well but nothing else.

So what's the point of PSO2 NA if our character growth will not carry over? I spent a lot of time maxing all the classes. :\
You can still play regular PSO2, which will also be updated at the same time (though obviously not to the same extent, as the character models won't reach NGS's level of quality). Tons of stuff is carrying over as well - weapons, units, mags, emotes, cosmetics are all still relevant. They're just resetting progression since, presumably, NGS is doing something entirely different from base PSO2 in that regard.

So that trailer basically confirms that the entire game is going to be updated with the new graphics engine. That is just insane.

This is absolutely insane and looks amazing.

Figured I'd hop on PSO2 and play tonight as this really got me hyped, but seems it's been deleted from my PC for like the third time... Really hoping that Steam release is soon

Am beginning to wonder why even bother updating the old game ?
It feels like something that should have come out now. Not at the same time as NGS.

Your character model will still look outdated compared to the newer ones.

Why not call it PSO 3 at this point ? Story ?

Yea PSO1 came out in 2000. PSO2 in 2012. PSO3 in 2021 woulda been perfect. One for each decade.

So my only way to play this in Europe is to import a Japanese copy for my PS4, or grab the US Xbox version? Ok, are the servers region locked or anything at present a la DQ10?

I love the ambition of what they're doing here. It's a sequel/total overhaul that will exist in parallel with its predecessor. It's something I speculated FFXIV was going to do following FFXI and it's really cool to see the idea given shape here.

Yea kinda bummed about our characters tho. Why come out and say we wont lose our characters if we lose everything but our looks? That was a little lie on their part. They knew what we were asking. But whatever.

I think this is everything that I ever could've asked for in a PSO update.

EDIT: I suspect most, if not all, customizations will eventually make it into NG. There are essentially thousands of items that have to be upgraded to account for the new character models and graphical update. That coupled with development of the update itself is a pretty massive order.

PSO2 is Sega's biggest and most profitable game right now I believe. I don't have the numbers for it but I wouldn't be surprised if it's generated more revenue than every other PSO game before it combined. They're most likely sticking with PSO2 in the title to maintain the brand.

In terms of story it appears to be a fairly direct sequel too, so there's that as well.

Wow, this seems like a Final Fantasy XIV overhaul! Great to read. Calling this to release "globally" and then leaving out Europe is... a misstep though.

I get why people want their old cosmetics to come over but the new ones look so much better. Really like the mix of materials. the combination of carbon fibre/latex/armor on the female costume is really cool (yes, if a bit fetishy...)

So the video says: emotes and registered data will travel with us between games, and as we see the chest plate consumable piece in the new creator footage it seems the fashion we have registered to us will come, but what about outfits that can be sold?

If registered fashion can come, then we still have use for earning meseta as we can items to take with us to wear, and even jump back to buy stuff from the older game if we want.

This part desperately needs some clarification, though. They know fashion is a huge part of the game, this should have been much clearer.
