Jin is an edgelord, but those flames really had to go.

FR's new costumes are mostly good, some great, some kinda bad, but S2+3 redesigns are absolutely top tier.
I mean, look at this:

Massive improvement.

Tekken 7 designs are fine, plus you can just use the older outfits for a lot of characters. The only person that got screwed over design wise is lei. Dosen't even look like him but fortunately I don't use him. Nina on the other hand looks sick in her new outfit. Glad it was patched in too.

I think Tekken 7 redesigned outfits are hit and miss. Some of them are great, some of them are bad.
A lot of them are busy and edgy, which isn't necessarily bad. But I can't believe how they butchered Hwoarang.

I still think from design standpoint, Tekken 4 was my favorite.

I can put up with a lot of silly designs, most of the ones posted in this thread I'm fine with, but good lord does Lars look stupid

Tekken has always been over designed to convey that the characters are purposely flashy. They just went to far in 7 and too much of it reminds me of people that wore the loud dragon ball z shirts in the 90's.

Jin's new outfit (and them making him act like Lelouch) sucks. T4 Jin still the best and always will be.

Kitwe, Zambia.
Redesigns for the base characters from TT2 are 50/50 for me. Some work, others don't. edesigns for the DLC characters are all fantastic. New chars are a mixed bag.

Char by char
Akuma - Is akuma
Alisa - Big improvement. Got rid of the weird asymmetry
Anna - As good as the original if not better. Looks really sick and contrasts well with Nina's new outfit.
Armor King - Just flat out cooler looking.
Asuka - Both designs are kinda dumb but the old one was more recogniseable
Bob - Much better. The tucked in shirt was dumb imo. New casual vibe sits better with me.
Bryan - Just as good. The mask and coat are sick. Single robot arm is a bit much.
Claudio - I like his alts better, especially the one with the swag Jaguar coat.
Devil Jin - A bit too much. The chains on normal DJ felt like they hit the right balance for edgy Jin.
Dragunov - The hat is top notch. Looks cooler than the old design. Also like the blue coat over the brown uniform
Eddy - Will not be as iconic as the yellow, but the out fit is good imo. The coat fits him well and looks swagger.
Eliza - Don't care for this character's design. Not offensively bad at least.
Feng - About even with his OG design. The scarf is a nice touch to a kinda bland design but the chains are a bit much
Geese - is Geese
Gigas - Euugh
Heihachi - Every single design he's gotten is good imo. T7 isn't an exception. Outfit looks boss.
Hwoarang - I respect the bancho energy but wtf is going on with the eyepatch?
Jack 7 - Is a Jack
Jin - My least favorite new design because of those god awful boots plus the way he zips up the outfit. Yuck. T6 Jin was the best.
Josie - Just enough bling to sell that she's a model. Like Claudio she has even better alts though.
Julia - Controversial but I like the new look. Way more than the old one at least.
Katarina - Euugh.
Kazumi - Best new character design in this game. Knocked it out of the park.
Kazuya - Love the new design. The shine on the coat never stops pleasing me.
King - Not much of a change. They just added a cape lol
Kuma - Tekken Force Kuma is alright, but normal Kuma is better.
Lars - White and gold colors are miles better than his t6 outfit.
Law - The changes don't feel substantial enough.
Lee - Fantastic. Fits him being a baller way more than his default T6 outfit. The detail on the jacket is great.
Leo - Like Jin, I hate this one because the old one was so good.
Lili - The dress is nice and has cool physics but it's not a substantial enough change for me to prefer one to the other
Lucky Chloe - This character actually looks decent if you remove the cat paws. A mess otherwise.
Master Raven - A mess. The weird thigh gap still bothers me.
Marduks - Big improvement. Looks like a badass. I only dislike the dyed beard.
Miguel - Slight downgrade because the orange shirt was so good.
Nina - Decent outfit. Story mode outfit is even better though.
Negan - is Negan
Noctis - is Noctis though he has one fantastic alt that I wish was in FFXV
Paul - Unnecessary change, but not terrible. Old one is better.
Shaheen - A bit boring for a new design. Only noticeable thing is he's handsome lol
Steve - Badass look and I prefer it to his old boxer outfit. Fits well next to his other stellar outfit with the trousers and long sleeve shirt.
Xiaoyu - Much better overall. They didn't do too much but only just enough to get to where we are.
Yoshimitsu - Gross.

It's like you're mad that people put on shirts. How were Hwoarang's strappy leather chaps not overly elaborate? And there isn't a Tae Kwon Do stylist alive who would ever wear a dobok that cuts off at the belly button as he did in his original appearance. Then that man had the nerve to have his name printed on his belt AND both gloves in Tekken 4. He's been simplified if anything. I never thought I would see the day when Jin's fire pants were suggested to be subtle. That's what karate tournament demonstrators used to wear in 1987. And Marduk's crocodile skin shorts and knee pads? He must be Australian! Jesus Christ.

Also, regarding Katarina's design, google "Why Katarina is the most Brazilian character ever created and why nobody outside of Brazil knows that", it's on r/kappa so I don't think I can link it here.

I agree that some characters fell into overdesigned hell, at least you can customize their looks.

Yeah, a bunch of them are pretty overdesigned, but that is not always a bad thing. Some of the earliest legacy characters lack visual personality, so I can see where they were going.

Marduk was one of the ugliest fighting game characters I have ever seen before, but I actually think his design in Tekken 7 is pretty good. Lili, Julia and Asuka's redesigns are equally fantastic to their original designs and I love how Lei is even more directly based on Jackie Chan.

Hwoarang's redesign is a goddamn nightmare though.

Real talk: Hwoarang's military look in Tekken 4 was a neat change to the character and they should progressed on that front rather than the odd Yakuza-esque reject in T7.

Love T7, but you're not wrong. Always hated Jin's new look, Hwoarang's is a goddamn travesty, Anna's is just complete overkill, etc.

Marduk looks alright, though.

I mean this kind of over-designed characterization is a trend in Japan, isn't it? It's all over anime, it's what people complain about in newer Pokemon designs, it's reared its head in more than a couple Final Fantasy games, etc.

For games, I always blamed it on the fact that it was due to character designers no longer feeling limited to smaller resolutions and trying to design hyper-detailed characters that would work well in high-def. I mean, that's literally what Inafune said when he designed Mighty No. 9 and gave him all these coils and bolts and a visor. I think somebody at Game Freak said that's why Pokemon are so over-designed these days, too.

"Simple", "readable" and "clean" characters don't always show off pixel density super well even if they might look nice in other contexts

Shrapnel from a grenade.

In regards to the topic, some of the new designs are a tad tacky. But, some of them are pretty cool. People bugged Harada for years because they kept reusing the T5 designs for a decade. So now no one can ever complain because Harada will exact revenge in some ridiculous fashion. You have to delete the topic. lol

T4 has the best character and stage designs. I wish more of that game evolved with the rest of the series.

But T7 is more hit or miss to me. Better than 6 though.

I'm with you OP. Was a very monkeys paw situation with me, as I was tired of them using the Tekken 5 designs, which they'd used for the majority of the cast for the previous three games as well as the arcade debut of Tekken 7. I thought they'd be able to come up with something both decent and fresh, as they had from Tekken 1-5, and with a lot of the bespoke customizations in Tekken 6.

Instead it looks like they've got a quota on how many accessories a character must have. Everything is so busy and discordant, it looks less like a thoughtful design and more like the work of someone who compulsively fills up every available section in a character creator. Like this monstrosity I made in SoulCalibur VI when I tried to do just that (and to see how many physics items the game would let me slap on):

There's a lot to be said of having just a bit of restraint, but half of these character's looks are out-Yoshimitsuing Yoshimitsu.

Zafina looks good though. And a handful of others work for me, like Steve.

Some are just busifying the old designs without much real change at all. King is just his Tekken 5 look with a cape slapped on. Law is just his Tekken 5 look (sans mustache, courtesy of Tekken 6) with his pants made golden. Jack-7 is just his Tekken 5 look with more garish coloration.

Absolutely, I've just never been a fan of overly busy designs. Part of why I don't like a single character from Guilty Gear or BlazBlue. Tekken was always crazy with some characters like Yoshimitsu, but you also had the more grounded, actual martial artist-like looking characters which is something I miss.

Character designers and graphic designers are not the same thing. And do not abide by the same rules, often the rules of character design change depending on what the project is and what people want out of the project. Some project require crazy " over designed " designs. This is ontop of what is over design is in the eye of the beholder and unless it is a almost universally hated design is usually something that can be argued.

This is actually really funny , because there's an illustrator meme about or family members asking us to design logos and shit and us telling them, we aren't the people to do that.
Overdesigned just tends to mean that whatever point that the design was supposed to make was made about 5 or 10 accessories ago. By definition no project NEEDS anything overdesigned since to overdesign means that you've gone into the realm of needless. A good question to ask is what is this design trying to show about a situation or character? If you don't need 12 belt buckles to show that then there's a chance that the design has too much going on.

I like Jin's Tekken 7 outfit but I still think they perfected that hoodie design in 4;

b2d1e57bec48c19e06cff28763df5212.jpg

Otherwise, I think Hwoarang is the only example in the OP that's objectively bad. The others are fine and some of the better redesigns in the game.

I was about to say I like Jin's T7 design because of the hoodie but this is straight up better. Damn.

The issue with this, simply put. You could just think it looks fucking sick. There are so many designs I love with things that would generally be deemed as needless that looking fucking. Sick, they have no practical use, they say nothing about the character. It just looks fucking sick. Sometimes designs have a lot of thought put into them, sometimes more than people give them credit for. A good example is sonic characters, those characters are designed generally really well and are captivating to the eye, the character designs being so strong simple are how the series has survived for so long I would argue. The strength of its visual design.

There are other things that just look cool. And some people like " It looked cool " , that's it.

I'm not really sure how anything you said highlights any issue with my initial statement. I'm not saying that it is impossible to make something good by just being mindless about it, but just like how it's possible to hit a target with your eyes closed; it's hard to argue that it is the best method or a recommended one at that. I can't think of any design that would be WORSE if more thought was put into it.

The only character I think looks like shit is Jin in his leather romper. Otherwise the game just needs more default costume options. The limited tournament legal costumes is wack.

I don't really think its hitting a target with your eyes closed, but by that alone I can already see we think way differently on this and I don't really care to argue this really

I wish the Tekken team would work more on narrative continuity and character complexity more so than visual redesigns. The old designs are iconic, they'd be fine with graphical updates.

Tekken always hints at something deeper behind it's characters stories but never travels those roads. That's a missed opportunity.

I say all that to say Tekken still has no peers.

Dead or Alive is heading into that disjointed design route with Honoka, Marie Rose and Nico looking really out of place.

I feel they've become a lot worse over time, generally. A few are still okay, I guess. But a lot of the new characters are pretty hideous like Claudio who has a neck like he's swallowed Viagra which started working in his throat. And they've always had massive hands and feet. Though I've seen worse.

Ever since Tekken 5, a large majority of the Tekken cast had the same costume for over 10 years. Tekken 5, Tekken 5: DR(recolors, but still the same costumes), Tekken 6 vanilla, Tekken 6: BR, Tekken Tag 2 and even Tekken 7 vanilla had the same characters wearing the same costumes outside of a select few who actually got new costumes. Then, Tekken 7 gets it's console release and all those old characters finally get new costumes, and I feel that they're all great new costumes.

I guess I was spoiled by Soul Calibur giving their cast completely new costumes in every new iteration, because I was wanting the Tekken cast to get new costumes for a pretty long time, and Tekken 7 finally gave them some, and I loved it!

Crazy and overdone designs are something I actually enjoy a lot about fighting games (though I rarely play fighting games). But I get where you are coming from. I am probably one of the only people who found some of Persona 5's menu and hud transition way to busy and irritating (especially the one after a battle is won).

I loved Tekken 4, and it had the best Julia design.

Best look for sure. She's got her best personality now, though. Goofy streamer is way better than lame serious scientist.

Tekken 4 appreciation thread?

As it should be, Tekken 4 is awesome!

I really wish patches were a thing back then. Nerf Jin's JFLS and 2,1, maybe nerf Steve a little, and the conversation around that game is completely different.

I really miss this design for Hwoarang. Taekwondo >>>>> Biker Dude, and it worked really well as the "Player 2" design to Jin, who was supposed to be his rival in Tekken 3, which I guess got dropped at some point.
