Xenoblade DE is the blurriest game I've played in the modern era, to the point I'm waiting for Yuzu resolution scaling, so I'd choose persona 4 on pc just so you can actually see what is going on lol

They're very different games. If the lifesim aspect is more appealing, go with Persona. If a sprawling, grand adventure in large scale environments is more your speed, go with XC.

Xenoblade if your into open world and epic story.

I just got used to it, but I agree that portable mode can look ridiculously bad at times.

If you like Dragon Age and Final Fantasy XII, I would recommend Xenoblade DE. The battle system is not like exactly the same as those but it feels a bit inspired by those and maybe certain MMORPGs to me. It felt like a more frenetic FFXII battle system but without the gambits and a focus on controlling a single character while your party members are AI controlled.

Both games are really good, but if I had to recommend only one of them, it would be Persona 4 Golden.

There's just something incredibly special about P4G, an almost magical quality that very, very few games possess. The cozy atmosphere of Inaba and the characters of the game will stay with you for a long time. There's nothing else like this game.

Depends on what you want. Persona is more about interpersonal relationships and has a story on a smaller scale with a turn based battle system. While Xenoblade is more akin to the classic grand adventure with an active battle system. You cannot go wrong with either. I personally would pick Xenoblade since it is among one of my favorite JRPG's of all time.

I urge you to make your decision based on what the replies in this thread say about the two games and not the voting results. P4G is a good game but it's one of this forums darlings and would probably win against any other RPG in such a vote barring possibly FF7 or some variation of it. I enjoy both games for the record, but they are pretty different so read the replies where others have laid this information out pretty clearly.

Are there decent character interactions in Xenoblade? Is it comparable to something like a Dragon Quest? I know the sim elements are typically why folks love Persona games.

^^^ You build affinity/relationships between characters by helping them, having them in your party, etc., and there are scenes that you can enjoy based on how strongly you build them (there are also other benefits to this as well), but it's not in a "sim" way that you're describing. I think they add considerably to the character relationships and various backstories and are worth seeking out. I'd say the way the characters interact is closer to DQ (more traditional JRPG-style). But you don't "spend time" in daily life situations with characters the way you do in Persona. I think they're both quite good in that respect.

Updated the OP cause it has come up a couple of times but I already own both digitally (P4 - PC / Switch - Xeno) so not concerned with the cost component.
Xenoblade would take it for me for the handheld factor alone. Kinda pains me that I can play Catherine now and P5 Strikers next month on Switch, but not P4G. I have P4G on PC too, but I've come to really dislike sitting in front of my PC to play it when my first experience with it was on Vita.

Never played DQ so I can't comment on how similar the sim aspect is to XC. But I can tell you that XC has characters build affinity towards each other though it's excellent combat and pretty mundane item trading. The character interactions themselves are a delight so my only gripe with it is how uninvolved building character relationships is.

How much did you like the social stuff in Three Houses? Persona has something similar, but I think it does it much better than Three Houses.

There are "heart to hearts" where in certain areas and with certain party members, you unlock special side interactions. They're just text in XC1, but are fully voiced in XC2. Some of the party members kind of fade into the background once their arc is over, but they occasionally come back out and have some good moments. If you do a lot of side quests, you can get character specific reaction quotes too.

In xenoblade one sadly no the character stuff is severely lacking in the main story, the side characters in the story become hugely irrelevant after it progresses past their initial introduction or if they have one their arc. It does have a mechanic called heart to heart that can offer some decent moments but to see most of them you have to GRIND HARD to see them, it would take less time to do all of p4's social links then it would to see all of xenoblade 1's heart to hearts just from the sheer grind to get them

Easily Xenoblade. I really, really, really liked my time with Persona 4: Golden, but at the same time I really grew tired of the dungeons and combat to the point where I cranked down the difficulty to non-existent. It works great as a social sim game, though.

These two are probably my favorite JRPGs of the century (if we exclude Dark Souls etc. as JRPGs), but out of the two, my favorite is Xenoblade. You're in for quite a ride with either, and I'm kind of surprised you played neither yet!

Golden is a great game, but let's be real. That game is a visual novel with a dungeon crawl every couple hours.

Xeno is a marvel of world building and exploration on top of some really fun systems that will keep you engaged. Few RPGs do better.

They are wildly different experiences but I would recommend xeno first.

If you a like a simple (story, gameplay, etc) jrpg go for Xenoblade. If you wanna something more complete and challenging go for Persona 4 Golden.

P4G has some of the best characters in a RPG...I was legit bummed at the end to not have more time with them...it was a happy and sad feeling after 90ish hours

Both are must play.

Xenoblade is more about an epic journey on a unique and vast setting. Persona 4 is more about slice of life relationships in an urban supernatural setting. Depends on your mood, really.

Honestly surprised more prefer P4G. I love both but I would handily recommend Xenoblade over P4G. Both have great gameplay albeit real time vs. turn based, likeable characters and an engaging story but P4Gs dungeons are sooooo fuckin bad it bogs down the entire package. You have both so you can't go wrong with playing either first, but in my opinion Xenoblade is the more solid experience.

Currently going through P4G for the first time and... i kinda stopped playing because i got distracted with other games. It was fun while i played, but i felt more like a visual novel at times than a proper RPG i guess...

So i say Xenoblade Chronicles. That game was truly magical and i played it start to finish over the span of 3 months. It was probably the best RPG i have ever played and i played a lot of them.

If you liked FF12, you will love Xenoblade. Its a similar combat system but much more positional and each character feels super different to play

Also the Story and characters are my favourite in any game ever, so that helps lol
