I honestly think this is a fascinating and extremely complicated topic, and that many of the arguments put forward in this thread are all partially correct in the context of a much larger picture.

One that's gets me is Norm and Cliff from Cheers. When the show started they were in their mid 30s.

Kelsey Grammer wasn't even 30 when he first showed up in Cheers.

Eh, that isn't outrageous it's mostly the awful haircut. If he shaved it off he'd look a decade younger.
You know some old ass looking 26 year olds if you think him shaving his head would be enough to look that young

There's also something to be said for how phony and vain everyone is today.
Spoken like someone who probably looks old af! And I like how it's vanity and not people taking better care of themselves

hairpiece, or plugs?

yeah plugs. back at the old place there was a whole thread about it (i think somebody leaked studio shots from Casino Royale, or maybe it was the following two Bond movies, i can't remember).

but yeah it's a fairly commonplace thing. like watch any movie jude law was in around the 00's his hairline continuity makes no sense

appreciate the answer! As I approach my 40s and begin thinning out a bit on top I'm increasingly fascinated with how actors do it. Ryan Reynolds is really starting to recede but still clings onto his trademark hairstyle (for example)

I mean that's undeniably part of it, are you saying you disagree?

For example, male leads in movies before the 80s looked like human beings. Now everyone is on some level of steroids.

I've been watching episodes of This Old House from the 80s with my partner, everyone on the show looks ten years older than what I imagine.

Surely this is a guy nearing 40, right? Nope, he's 25.

To be honest, it really doesn't seem that much different nowadays either. I see plenty of people with deep forehead wrinkles, laugh lines, etc by their mid 20s, and people that start balding in their teens. Male pattern baldness makes any guy look significantly older.

Is having wrinkles by your mid 20s genetics or just a poor lifestyle?

I don't have any signs of wrinkles whatsoever, but I'm only 23 and you shouldn't have any at this age anyways, BUT I've seen people in this age range with wrinkles. I'm terrified of aging, so when I see people not much older than me look significantly older than me, it scares me. I use a facial moisturizer with SPF, avoid too much sun, use body lotion, drink plenty of water, and I'm mindful of my sugar and sodium intake. I don't drink or smoke either. For exercise, I mostly do cardio work. I'm white as snow so I know it's probably inevitable, but I don't want to see a single fucking wrinkle on my face until I'm at least 30.

I sweat to god Daniel Craig must've been born 40. I saw a clip of him in his early 20s from A Kid in King Arthur's Court (yeah, he was in that) and he looks EXACTLY the fucking same.

Even in the late 90s early 2000 seniors high school students looked like young adults. Nowadays seniors look like 9 graders.

That picture of Archie Bunker is crazy. I'm 2 years younger than him. He looks like he's 60-70. Legit like he's someone's grandpa.

The math on this never made sense. Bart is only 10. Marge and Homer got pregnant pretty fresh out of high school, didn't they? Which is why they rushed into marriage. So at most he should be 28-30?
now try to figure out how 54-year-old Dorothy from The Golden Girls has a son in his 20s when she got knocked up in high school

The observation about smoke is on the money - smoke fucks your skin up bad, even second hand. People were swimming in it indoors until the 80/90s.

Also, fashion. Middle aged and even young-ish people were dressing in what we would see as senior citizen clothing today. 80s fashion REALLY changed things there.

Yeah? I don't remember them giving either one ages, but it's been awhile since I've watched the shows. I know in the few appearances she has, the daughter doesn't look that old, either, from what I recall
yeah, in the episode where he's marrying an older woman they mention he's 23

but in an earlier episode he's 29

the golden girls timeline is complicated

There's also something to be said for how phony and vain everyone is today.
I watched a couple of old MTV clips from the 90s about a week ago and completely disagree. The way people acted in past was so damn phony. That was back when people still believed in the cult of the celebrity. You could tell everyone was just copying whatever they were fed on TV.

At least these days people are much more honest and candid about the issues they face like mental health. There's also just a lot more diversity in the content people can consume rather than the manufactured celebrity shit they see on TV. Anytime I see a clip from the TV era it just makes me roll my eyes.

Former NBA player Sam Jones looked in his fifties when he was in his thirties.

I've thought the Whispers were old all my life. They were in their late 30's here.

The dude on the left, Leaveil Degree, has aged really well though. I think he's 73 now.

Ok wait, are we sure the pic on the left is from the first season? Those ladies look 75, almost 80... not 55. O_o Especially the 2nd from the left!
I don't think this one is a totally fair comparison. Sophia specifically (the second from the left) wore heavy makeup to make her look older than she did. And they were already in their 60s during the first season, not 50s. Bea Arthur was 70 by the time the season finale aired.

Some of these aren't as crazy to me as some people are saying in here. Jerry at 35 looks 35. George doesn't really either. It's mainly his baldness which basically isn't a thing in Hollywood anymore because anyone aspiring to be on TV/movies gets hair implants.

and the Rudd one is a little sad in a way showing how image obsessed we are now. Maybe he won the genetic lottery, but it's likely hair transplants and hair dyeing.

I decided to give the Golden Girls a makeover with more modern hairstyles for women in their 50s, though the clothes still date them.

I do I have a feeling that fact that most people drank and smoked a lot more back then played a role. I've noticed that of the people I was in high school with, those that don't do much of either look great now that we're all 30. Meanwhile I knew a girl that did hard drugs starting as a freshman, I saw a recent picture of her now and she looks like she's almost 50.

Yep, a lot of it is this. A lot of people smoked and used dip back in my hometown, and instead of looking like they should (late twenties/early thirties), they look like retirees. That shit takes legitimate years off your life.
