The strips are gold. Other stuff ranges in quality but none of it really captures what made Charles originals so great. Glad he made sure it was finished and his forever.

I could never get into the animated Peanuts but the comics are pretty solid.

The humor is more subdued than more recent comics, not as quick to make their point or get to the punchline.

That's not a bad thing necessarily but it stands out when you go back to it.

I love Peanuts. I watch the Halloween and Christmas specials every year. I've read countless comic strips. i just love these little characters.

Man, remember when they took a trip to France without any adult supervision?

James Gunn' PG Porn "Peanus" parody is all I can really think of every time I see Charlie Brown now. I think I've been scarred.

It's incredible, I love it, the only thing better than Peanuts is Calvin and Hobbes.

If anyone knows Spanish they should also check out Mafalda.

Calvin and Hobbes fans should note how much Watterson built on Peanuts.

Calvin is part Snoopy (in daydream mode), part Charlie Brown and part Lucy. Hobbes is Linus.

Some of the early strips even crib from Peanuts, like Calvin in the bathtub.

Anyway, here's probably my favorite Peanuts strip.

I love the series but in terms of animation Walt Disney was running circles around Peanuts (and really a lot of the "cheap" animation of the 60s and 70s) some 30 years prior since animation budgets were later hacked to death across the entire industry.

I watched "The Reluctant Dragon" on Disney Plus this morning and holy shit was the whole animation process back in the "golden age" a massive undertaking. It's no wonder that didn't keep up when everything moved to television.

If you watched Peanuts for animation quality you are missing the point.

The strip is the best ever. Read em chronologically to really get the richness of the storylines. Get on of the Fantagraphics Complete volumes from the 60s to start, for instance.

I loved the Peanuts as a kid and still love them. It also always had a good balance between staying true to its messages and selling out. It many not shield it against anything like "Calvin & Hobbes", but it also never became as terrible as "Garfield". It pretty much allow Schulz to get recognition on a bigger scale ... and his children to life from his work after his death.

I really need to read more of the original strips. I loved the animated movies growing up. My favorite Peanuts moment is probably the end of A Boy Named Charlie Brown:

Nonstop bullying and abuse for Charlie Brown from his friends and family. Making WW1 cute.

I really disagree.

You have no idea what you're talking about. This is a completely nonsensical takeaway from Peanuts. Zero basis in the text. Peanuts is a tremendously positive strip that never endorses the bullying as acceptable (although sometimes as inevitable). And there's a strip in this very thread that puts the lie to the idea that Charlie Brown is abused by his family. There's more to Peanuts than Lucy pulling the football away. All you need to know that is to read this thread.

Classic Schulz humor right here:

The animated specials and movies never approached the wit or poignancy of the strip at its peak.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown comes damn close, but overall yeah, the strip is another level from all other permutations of the property. At his peak Schultz was devastatingly truthful about a great number of things in life, and he got it all into a daily gag comic.

While i agree with you 100 percent, i will also tell you that shouldnt bother with trying to explain this.

I recently-ish treated myself to the complete Peanuts on Comixology. I'm still working slowly through it, but this comic from 1965 really struck me with its prescience, given the age Lucy would be now:

Peanuts, both animated and in strip form, is a timeless treasure.

And you know what, that CG movie they released isn't half bad either even when they're trying to modernise it and give it as happy an ending as anything Peanuts could ever really have in 90 minutes. It's really wonderful stuff that lives beyond its time unlike, let's say, Garfield. Which I loved as a kid, and now I barely tolerate, my love for Peanuts endures. Although animated and longform Garfield at it's peak is so much better than the strip.

I also really enjoyed the CG movie. It's way better than I expected and they did an amazing job translating the classic art style to CG.

It's not nearly as clever as some of the shorts or the old series, but still I had a good time.
