You can learn riposte("counter") and it's timing based on bladed weapons, like the daggers in Bound by Flame.
Traps are back, and there's different types (explosive, magic, poison) damage types- different enemies are vulnerable to different types.
All enemies (and allies. And you) have an armour value that reduces the HP damage they take, until you can "shatter" the armour. A few of the Guardian bosses have ridiculous amount of this armour and I struggled with those- granted, I didn't try using heavy 2-handed weapons like mauls, clubs or makes, because I don't like 2 handed weapons in general- I find them too slow for my reflexes, and I'd rather keep chipping away at enemy with a quick poisoned blade, but that's just me. Guns can do MASSIVE damage though, which is always fun to watch.
There's both block and a dodge-roll, and it's pretty forgiving. You build up a "focus" meter in combat that can allow you to a "charged", un-blockable attack to do HP damage- but you can also miss and swing at air with it, which is less fun. No stamina bar, so you can keep blocking, but some attacks are un-blockable.
There isn't much you can do in terms of your companions in combat, besides telling them general things like " be more defensive" or "be more aggressive". You CAN however give them equipment (and take theirs away to use yourself) and they level up, though you can't direct how they allocate their skills. Oh, and you can heal them, if you know how to. Or give them healing items so that they heal themselves.
Generally, combat's good against humans or small numbers of strong monsters. But more generic stuff like large groups of wolves or bears- not so much, especially early on. A lot of the times you can thin out their number by stealth, though.
