Hey, if people don't want to use Game Pass that's fine. I'm still subscribed, but also buy games on Steam. It's a lovely combination for me. I even play some games on GP and then buy them on Steam if I want to keep playing them.

I don't really feel the time pressure with gamepass tbh, I don't think I've ever seen a game leave in 2-3 months of appearing on it. And when games do leave you get a few weeks notice.

Picked up Scarlet Nexus in the current sales and actually really enjoying it. Just started Phase 3 of Yuito's story and was honestly half expecting to go for a refund an hour in. It's still ridiculously anime but not in the typical character tropey way that I find really off putting. Less clumsy female character falls on her ass showing her pants and more anime weirdness story progression.

Was gonna buy a secondhand laptop with a 3070 today, but now I'm thinking if I really need one for the next couple of years. My current laptop has a 1060 6GB and if I play around with settings I can play every game I own or want to buy. What games are "upgradeworthy"

I am in a similar situation with PC upgrades. The real problem is that the performance leaps are getting to be so significant with each generation that the thought of getting a bigger jump for less $ a year or so down the road stops me from buying something in the present, rinse and repeat, especially with as you say how basically everything is still comfortably playable on a 1060 with some compromises.

The games I have my eye on on the horizon would be Forspoken and maybe a Cyberpunk replay when all the DLC is out at max settings. Other than that, I dont see a whole lot of games coming out where I wouldnt be able to play them on my current setup.

I just discovered Amid Evil, which for some reason hasn't registered on my radar before now. I was looking for games with RTX features and there it was. I've been playing it for a bit and it's damn good.

You gotta look all New Blood games if you liked Amid Evil. All of them are great games (mostly shooters) that plug some really nostalgia string.

so you bitch about the price, but also bitch about gamepass.

you need a new gimmick Dex

honestly yeah; it's fair to complain about price if you want but its baffling to then complain at the cheaper alternative that is available.

the game pass arguments are constant and never changing from so many folk that ultimately always end in "I don't like subscriptions", and yet I bet the same people use netflix, spotify etc with no complaint
The fight for media ownership was lost a long time ago, and that we're debating it over digital licenses is even more farcical

I bought the double pack with Dusk, so that's a good start :) It's been a while since I've played a shooter of this type. The first few levels in Amid Evil have been really well designe, imo. I played Hexen, Heretic etc. back in the day, so it's great to see a revival of games that prioritize atmosphere and intricate level design over huge, expensive production values (and linear, cinematic levels), while still looking great. I also like the modern approach, but getting these kind of experiences back is great. I've missed them.

Amid Evil is great and DUSK is even better. Quake remastered though is just *chef's kiss*. Feels like I am in retro shooter heaven these days.

The way video games and film/series are consumed are different though. Setting aside that you often invest a lot more time into video games, watching a movie -- even one that resonates deeply with you -- does not involve quite the same degree of ownership and self-insertion that a playthrough of a game does. It's just an inherent factor of the medium. Things like these lead to different mentalities toward different types of media. I don't think that analogy works here.

I'm sure I sound like a broken record at this point, but I haven't been this excited for a game since I was kid and I'd tear small holes in birthday/Christmas wrapping paper just to get a peek at the retail box.

Just three days to go.

Edit: I'm a dumbo and forgot to link the actual video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbvzs2g69c8
Really excited for this. Rift Apart wet my whistle, but this is the real shit (for me).

I have to disagree, I don't see how it's really different quite frankly. Media is media.

But if we do go down that line of thinking then it's certainly comparable to time invested in a tv series, and people barely buy them anymore, that's all consumed on demand and streaming.
Or another case would be books, and the obvious alternative for buying there is libraries.

I'm not saying it's foolish to buy though but the yearning of "I don't like subscriptions" at seemingly games alone feels bloody hollow

Maybe it's the same for you, but it's not for me and that's one of the reasons why. I'm sure it extends to others as well. It's in a way comparable to model building or Lego for me. I don't just toss the models when I'm done building. Something like that. Certain games I've invested a lot of effort in have similar associations even if they sit there on my shelf, digitally or physically.

If you want to scratch the itch of old-school FPS + RTX even further, there's the RTX mod for Quake 1 and Nvidia's raymaster of Quake 2 (you'll need to buy the OG Quake 2 to access the full campaign).

I played the shareware level of Quake II RTX and I think I'm good. The gameplay hasn't aged that well for my taste. But then again, I see that Quake II is only 1,49€, so I might as well give it a chance... I haven't played it since it came out waaaayyyy back when.

Amid Evil scratches this newfound itch perfectly for now. I'll definitely start following this type of game more on Steam.

Have tried a few streamed Xbox Cloud game via my PC (mostly for the convenience of not having to download and just to try it out as a service really).

Perhaps a slightly controversial take but I have very little interest in using it as a serious platform as long as high detail areas in games continue to look like this:

dEwzGm6.png

I have fast fibre internet and the stream isn't exactly pushing my connection (latency & responsiveness is all good). I just think the compression / blocky-ness looks so bad and as more games are pushing small particles and detail that causes streams to crumple it isn't a good experience at all.

Some suggestions: Prodeus, Dusk, Project Warlock, Strife, Ziggurat, Hard Reset Redux, Blood Fresh Supply, Immortal Redneck, Ion Fury, Shadow Warrior 1 and 2.

Re Quake, is the Steam version fine then? I remember seeing mention here and elsewhere something about the soundtrack not being correct?

I am so glad that I bought Route 96. On my first run I had serious Life is Strange vibes. There is a scene where you arrive at a trailer park at night. Even though you are trying to flee the country, the atmophere in that camp is quite cozy. There you meet another young person on the run, who really likes the trombone, and you have a sweet and fun evening with her by the campfire. All this is accompanied by Indie folk music in the style of Sufjan Stevens. I wanted to hug the game. In general, the writing is really good. It is always interesting and exciting to meet old and new faces on the road. I am really vibing with that game. Maybe that is because I like road trips or the breezy pace of this trip keeps me hooked. It's a great game that deserves more buzz.

I was playing The Ascent earlier on Game Pass and the game crashed. No biggie, it was time to take a break. I just came back and both of my characters are gone; one for my single player campaign and one for co-op. It's a Play Anywhere title so I figured it would have cloud saves?

Had a really good time with 12 Minutes. Played it with a bunch of friends on discord. Anything else yall would recommend in the same vein as that? Looking to get Her Story.

Her Story is an excellent game. If you enjoyed the time looping aspect, I would suggest looking at The Forgotten City too.

"Its a kinda of game that only comes arround to scan a few times per console generation. In a industry that sometimes feels like its just regurgitating the same cynical product repeatedly. Psychonauts 2 is a beaming ray of unbridled imagination. One that hopefully gets the love its due"

Been playing Psychonauts 2 the past week for review and it's such a nice change of pace from generic Game Pass game A and B. The variety in the game is amazing and you can really tell they upped their budget, so much (funny) voice acting and the worlds are huge. I read some reviewers complaining about mid-2000s platforming but personally I found it charming although not that challenging.

What's mid-2000s platforming? Some hidden subgenre I didn't know of?

King's Bounty II out tomorrow. Pre-ordered it so happy to answer any questions once I get some time to play. Still looking for that perfect HOMM game. I don't think this will be it.

Surprised there is no Naraka Bladepoint OT actually, been playing it past few days and really enjoying it. Doing all the character missions to earn free stuff and it's amazing. Got my first 3 parries in a game (and the game after too lol) and slowly ranking up towards silver. A lot of potential with this game.

Minecraft on Steam would be so nice. I own it but I always forget about it since I don't even have the client installed right now. Would pop in much more if it was on Steam.

it is, but I think it was before, I even tried performance mode in dlss, and I have a 3090 so shouldn't be that bad, unless they added more rtx to everything.
I will try to delete and reinstall
There is a bug right now, so it is caching the shaders somewhat slowly on first boot, but after that it should be good. With RT on its heavier, but without it it should def be smooth.

Damn, Quake is just such fun.
I'm going through the remaster now after not having played it since 1996-97 and I'm having a blast. I was but a wee babe back then and used cheats to finish it but now I'm playing it on hard mode as it was intended.

I find with these sorts of games (Quake, DUSK, Amid Evil, etc.) I can only play for short periods before I need a break because the pace is just too relentless. Thankfully the levels in this type of FPS are typically only a few minutes long, so it's easy to break it up into manageable pieces.

I am bizarrely in the mood for a racing game. Project Cars is like 90% off on fanatical. Would you recommend it for the casual player? I remember really enjoying TrackMania Turbo on PS plus, so that's an option too.

Project CARS is more on the simulation side of racing games. It's not super sim like some other games, but it's not an arcade like racer like TrackMania. The best arcade racing game on PC is Forza Horizon 4. I can't recommend it enough but it's still pretty expensive (or on Game Pass). Burnout Paradise remaster is pretty decent as well if you're looking for something more casual. But I don't think you'd enjoy Project CARS if you're looking for a casual racing game.
