What's that term or phrase in political science, where one side will continually push a narrative that is more and more extreme to make their side appear closer to the center?

Overton Window?

There's definitely elements of it that pervade gaming (and other geek cultures/subcultures), as a means of pushing a narrative. Easy mode, Loot Boxes and Steam/EGS all have extreme views pushed as "the norm" in order for the Overton Window to shift Right (against an easy mode, for Loot Boxes and against Steam, respectively).

"Hold on as long as I could" is not a phrase I would use for a PSU. I would bail at the first sign of trouble. Wouldn't want to risk it.

Quality components wont fry the rest of your hardware.
My last PSU (Topower 650W) lasted 8 years and went out with a huge bang while I was very focused playing Tiny & Big. Nothing else got damaged. Replaced it with a Seasonic 620W.

Buy quality and save yourself later trouble.

These twitter threads are so annoying because there is no room for learning or admitting your mistake. Anyone who disagrees will be looked at as a crazed Steam lunatic who doesn't know what they're talking about.
Twitter is already a cesspool that rendered nuanced discussion moot to begin with. Threads that started with (strings) of tweets of course wouldn't stray much from the toxicity.

As someone who tries to stick up for gaming journalists, I'm completely baffled by their hilariously bad takes on EGS & Steam.

I mean god damn! Do five minutes of research! It'd make a world of difference.

Maybe I'm just frustrated in general. I've been writing about games for over a decade, and it absolutely feels like nothing has changed. All I want is for gamers to think for themselves and approach subjects with even a modicum of curiosity and understanding. Instead it's just a constant deluge of bullshit.

I honestly still wouldn't be surprised by a RDR2 deal. It's a similar situation to Ubi, where they've already been trying to move to their own launcher. It gives them a pile of cash and cover for doing something they clearly already want to do.
I doubt that.
Rockstar is still a subsidiary of TakeTwo, and they unlike Ubisoft don't have universal launcher for all of their games. Actually, it is only Rockstar AFAIK that had separate launcher for their Social Club. Moreover TakeTwo is more aware of their position in the global market unlike Ubisoft who seemingly still myopic to US and Western Europe. I got that perception from the fact that: TakeTwo have better regional pricing (for my region mind you) and also regional game launch time. Thus with those three points in mind, I don't think TakeTwo going to ditch Steam soon, at least not yet anyway because we don't know if they ever going to turned Rockstar Social Club into their own separate launcher.

Also it's most likely that TakeTwo have their own revenue split deal with Valve anyway that's much cheaper than creating their own storefront and the infrastructure needed.

Most of Era are "liberals" who are nowhere close to being actually left leaning. Some are also just rightines judging by people having a real one and screaming BUT MUH SOCIALISM when someone mentioned that capitalism is bad in another thread like 2 days ago rofl.
Me and my friends usually calls them 'socially progressive, financially conservative' lmao. The end goal for them is rainbow oligarch, but still oligarch nonetheless.

Most of the hot take, under informed journalists I see in gaming media do not have a journalism or writing education*, background, or training, and write in that provocateur style made popular when blogging was all about the same kind of click bait "OH NO HE DIDN'T" drive by reactions now prevalent on YouTube (just scrolling through YouTube thumbnails really makes me worry for the younger generations).

* not that a journalism degree is needed or would make them better, lots of journalists started in some other specialized field and then decided to write about it after all. It does suggest a certain level of discipline and understanding of the process however, which are things many of the kinds of journos we're discussing seem to lack. I mean, it's clear some I'm reading on Twitter now aren't actually heavy PC gamers or seem to grasp the situation at hand - I.E. they failed to do their research

how do workshop / subscribed mods work? are they automatically updated when the creator updates them, like if it was the game itself auto updating?

You know what grinds my gear?

"look at those 2 reddit Posts/tweets from an anonymous person on the internet and write an article about how awful gamers are."
Especially if those tweets or posts were downvoted or ridiculed by the fanbase themselves. But you get an article who only point to those 1 or 2 posts and condemn the whole fanbase.
And more extreme, you are disliking a company/game/person's view and some dipshit makes a racist/*phobic/misogynistic remark and suddenly you are a gamergater.

You can effectively shut down constructive critique and real concerns with pointing out 1 dipshit and generalizing the whole group.
This is what I really hate from Era or gaming journalism. I won't deny that there are a lot of toxicity in gaming, but laser focusing on the worst wouldn't solve the problem and in fact will only worsened it. I study media, and what are they doing right now is basically this and that is extremely dangerous.

Yes, it's automatic update.

The way hordes of game journalists repeatedly post easily refutable lies and misinformation, ignore any and all call-outs and just go ham on the obvious idiots instead just really reminds you of Trump and the Alt-Right.

And unfortunately, we all know how successful this rhetoric is.

Finally killed Behomoth woot, dude was cart city for almost everyone until I finally found a good group and got used to hiding behind the comets.

Can't believe we haven't gotten any info on Iceborne and are probably going to have to wait half a year after the console players anyway. World has the worst end game since the original ps2 entry and it's just a fucking grind.

Duke's Archive in Dark Souls 1 sucks way more than I remember

I didn't want to say it, but Epic's strategy and obsessively misinformed fanbase really reminds me of the GOP.
I thought they were trying to push xenophobia. When did racism become the big focus?
They're basically the same thing. Wait, what are we talking about here, Epic?

Yes. But turning this into a race thing is pretty fucking ridiculous. But I guess if you're dismissing concerns over a video game launcher as racism you're not the most logical person around.

This was posted in a discussion about if console manufacturers should lower their 30%. This is what the average console player thinks.

There were other comments like "Valve doesn't make any hardware" or "Valve has no R&D costs".

Hello, me and the rest of the internet gaming committee had a meeting today and we decided that nobody is allowed to ever talk or write about a From Software game again because it brings out the worst in people everywhere. It was either that or no more From Software games.
Please adjust your posting habits accordingly, thank you.

I remember defending it back in the day but I've finally joined the second half of Dark Souls is terrible club. Tomb of Giants is a stand out but the other areas are just a parade of linear bullshit with enemies who get you caught and stun locked or wide open areas that seem like they forgot to fill in before shipping.

Is there a way to "save" a Sekiro savegame?
I wanna get the Shura ending and just save before it in NG+, so I do not have to replay the first half of the game again for the other 2 endings.

I saw the MW2 jpeg pop up last night before logging off and thought "tis gonna be good" only to see the fallout blow back to this community....predictably. Cant believe this Epic shitshow is legit turning into some weird culture war now. I was not around for the Windows live shit but I wonder if it was the same back then too.

Pour one out for Lashley, Echo and Techno.

Just discovered Slay The Spire mods...

I should start looking into those. Stuck at A18 and I have given up on trying to get to A 20 or beating the heart. Now I just do custom game A20 and sealed deck runs.

I know these people aren't actually "journalists" and maybe I shouldn't be but i'm still constantly surprised by just how many of those stupid tweets that get posted here are from people in positions like senior editor

a random writer is one thing but i'd expect a minimum level of knowledge out of a position like that(or at absolute minimum more hesitancy to reveal the apparent depths of their ignorance)

I guess that's too much to expect out of the editors at what at this point feels like the majority of these sites

To be honest, both Private Division and 2K are also subsidiaries of Take2 yet both of them has "defected" to EGS. All with their latest releases and as we all know, Rockstar hasn't released a game on PC since it all started, not that I really think they would go EGS only. But BL3 did.

The most concerning thing for me in all of this is that there doesn't seem to be a single games journalist, editor or site being even remotely critical of the Epic Games Store. What are the chances of that? The EGS wades into the PC gaming scene throwing cash around, and there's not a single article (that I've seen) that analyses the situation – you'd think that someone, somewhere, would be interested in writing something about it that didn't just amount to "it's competition".

I think it all boils down to one part ignorance/misunderstanding and/or one part bloggers (there are very few video game journalists, if we're being brutally honest) not wanting to rock the boat of the developer behind the biggest game in the world.

Seems like people complaining about a multi-billion dollar corporation making exclusive deals with other multi-billion dollar corporations and employing anti-consumer practices to quickly grow their market share is now Gamergate: Redux.
