You know, after the prequels were over we all laughed at how stupid the Jedi had been as well as the general public. Palpatine is so obviously a Sith Lord. It's absolutely clear he plans to attempt a fascist take over of the Republic with himself as its permanent leader. Yet, no one actually wants to label him as a Sith Lord or fascist, for some weird reason. Mace Windu at one point literally says, "The Dark Side of The Force surrounds the chancellor." But despite this, he still can't bring himself to believe that Palpatine is a Sith Lord until Anakin straight up tells him. And Anakin can't see it either until Palpatine fully reveals himself.

We all thought this was a bit dumb, at the time. Now, it makes absolute goddamn sense. All these Jedi who had guarded the galaxy for "a thousand generations" fully bought into the power of themselves and the institutions that surrounded them. No, how could Dooku be part of the plot to assassinate Senator Amidala? Don't be silly, dumb senator. Count Dooku was once a Jedi, he would never do that. Again, blind loyalty and trust to an institution. Dooku straight up tells Obi-Wan that a Dark Lord of the Sith controls the Senate, and what does Obi-Wan and the Council do? Nothing. They refuse to believe it. Obviously Dooku was lying, the Galactic Senate is an entrusted institution. There is absolutely no way anyone could gain influence over its Senators.

Hey man, the Dark Side of The Force surrounds the Chancellor, he's extended emergency powers, again, he keeps moving the goalposts regarding the ending to the war, he keeps personally involving himself in Jedi matters and has installed a monitor on the Jedi Council, did I mention the Dark Side surrounds him? But no, you're a fool to think he's some fascist Sith Lord. Listen, he may be corrupt, a liar, a cheat, a power-hungry bastard, a manipulative politician, a Dark Side follower, a Sith Lord, but he is NOT a pornstar!

Palpatine proceeds to take over, kill all the Jedi, declare them enemies of the Republic and everyone gobbles it up and applauds him. He then systematically erases their history such that people basically forgot they existed some 30 odd years later or believe they were terrifying religious nuts. Which is STILL more believable than Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden being part of a shadow cabal of pedophiles that engage in satanic rituals involving the drinking of baby blood and that the Deep State is preventing the Dear Leader from exposing all of this but he is slowly putting people in power to make large scale arrests. Oh, and vaccines are evil and part of a ploy by the government to give you autism. And the election our leader badly lost is rigged against him but the Deep State is hiding the votes and mailed in hundreds of thousands of fake votes for Biden to ensure he lost so you must take matters into your own hands and...you know how it goes.

Whether Lucas intentionally saw that real fascist coups are rarely "smart" or history just kind of retroactively made the writing smarter, the end result is that Palpatine's coup seems way less stupid than the reality of today.

The prequels were miles better than the last jedi garbage.

The whole politics, intergalactic commerce, Clone Wars began due to galactic-equivalent of trade agreements being disagreed and later forming a separatists due to popularism, etc... so relevant to today's world.

I watched all 9 movies with my wife over the holidays and I found that real life has made The Force Awakens less stupid, too. Oh how we all mocked the First Order in 2015!

If I were to meet George Lucas eating at a mall I would apologize on behalf of all SW fans. Prequels are high art.

Lucas based it on events in Germany.

America is basing it off events in Germany.

It's just a different adaptation of the same story.

Not even gonna quote it, but 2 posts in and people already want attention.

On topic, I don't think there was ever anything actually unbelievable about the politics of the prequels. Its just that they were little more than politics, melodrama, and kid jokes.

To be clear that isn't exactly a mark against the prequels.

Prequels>Sequels.

The only thing I liked more from the Sequels were the fact that they went with more practical effects.

If the prequels were written and directed competently, they'd be sci-fi classics. Honestly, they're incredibly well-conceived in the wide view, which is why stuff like the Clone Wars were so successful playing in the sandbox they created.

After everything that happened last year and last week, basically almost every apocalyptic/sci-fi movie doesn't seen so unreal. People are just so god damn stupid.

I always felt this way, another part of the jedi subconsciously refusing to see through Sheev's ruse was that it would mean they were wrong and got played for fools unlike anything else in their history. No one wants to admit they get suckered into a scam, the far more likely reaction is to double down and deny reality.

They saw all the evidence that pointed to the worst case scenario but were too entrenched in their position. Yoda literally saw a vision of Order 66 and didn't tell anyone, he was so scared to rock the boat or do anything that inadvertently might make the vision come true, had too much blind faith in the systems and the Order that shit would just turn out fine....then he got Sheev'd.

Honestly I rewatched these while going through a breakup with my ex who developed Borderline-Personality disorder, and as stupid as it sounds Anakin's illogical behaviour and weird heel-turn suddenly became way more believable. Like I doubt mental illness is what they were going for, but if you read into it that way it's a lot easier to buy the melodrama as real.

Eh, TFO still seems too stupid specifically because the sequels are devoid of politics, specifically JJ's output. But, that's a separate topic.

There's a lot of analogies in science fiction that seem more on point these days, an infamous one in Babylon 5 comes to mind.
They're all inspired by WW2 which is even worse.

I don't know, it still seems pretty stupid to me.

Having your protagonists completely ignore or be oblivious to an obvious threat makes for a story that is not at all compelling. The threats posed by people like Trump, Bolsonaro, Duerte, etc were all completely recognized and called out both nationally and internationally, they were just able to plow ahead through populism. Except Palpatine never seems to have any kind of charisma, fire, or huge cult of supporters.

From what I remember about Babylon 5, the rise of fascism within the Earth government seemed way "smarter," basically our conventional, hindsight view of how the Nazis took over. Whereas the prequels seem closer to reality regarding how batshit insane and looney the Nazis were that no one took seriously until they were suddenly being hanged and shot by them while a crazy moustache man ran the country.

Even after the events of the 6th we still have people saying we suffer from Trump derangement syndrome and are overreacting.

The overarching plot was actually decent for the prequels, the execution was just abysmal.

Palpatine is shown as a backdoor dealer kind of guy, especially in the Clone Wars TV show. He's your best friend, he'll get you whatever you need...just as long as you do him a little favor. And plenty of people call him out, hell even Padme criticizes him to Anakin when she's like, "um, yeah the Republic is starting to seem fascist can you get the Chancellor to stop. I think the Separatists have a point." And then Anakin blows up like, "STFU, traitor. Don't talk ill about Dear Leader."

Then you've got the while Jedi Council who are constantly Murkowski levels of concerned about Palpatine's actions. But don't worry, they put their crack trusted agent Anakin on the job to keep tabs on him. Nothing can go wrong.

"A white supremacist?!"
*Cut to tis treason then scene, where Mace is killing Palp with his own lightning*
Palps: I was right! The Jedi are out to witch hunt and coup the government!
Mace: You have lost!
Palps: *Exact line from the movie works fine, literally just edit Trumps head on him*
*lightning*
Palps: Racist!
Mace: No, you're the racist!
Palps: I have the power to MAGA! Choose me! HELP ME!
Anakin: You can't do that. We need to heal! You can't just hurt a White Supremacist like that, if you do that you're part of the problem.
Mace: He has control of the Senate and the courts, he's too dangerous to leave alive!
Anakin: We need to heal and come together! He must live!
*Mace lifts saber*
Anakin: I need my god-emperor! NOOOOOO!
*Mace gets murdered*

I need that edit.

The Clone Wars has an episode where a group of bounty hunters just casually infiltrates the Senate Building, one of the most important places in the entire galaxy filled with many of the most influential leaders of the Republic. They then proceed to take a bunch of senators hostage, execute one when he defies them, and free a political prisoner they had been hired to bust out. Fun episode overall that I imagine might feel a little different these days.

There have been articles about how Anakin shows plenty of signs for Borderline-Personality Disorder.

Replace Sith Lord with White Supremacists and Jedi w/ Democrats

Obi-Wan: I have failed you, Anakin. I have failed you.

Anakin: I should've known the Democrats were plotting to take over.

Obi-Wan: Anakin, President Trump is a Racist.

Anakin: From my point of view, the Democrats are racist.

Obi-Wan: Then you are lost.

America is basing it off events in Germany.

It's just a different adaptation of the same story.
The Empire was always America, Lucas was pretty clear about it.
ANH is a metaphor for the Vietnam war.

It's even more on the nose in the prequels, like Revenge of the Sith is a very explicit anti-Iraq war movie.
