Europe + ANZ
Top 5 Retail + Download for Week 1, 2021

vdZdGe1.png

CY 2020

211.9 million games were sold across UK & Ireland, mainland Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in 2020, according to sales tracker GSD.

[...]

For these markets, 123.7 million games were sold, which is a 19% jump over 2019. 58.7 million of those games were downloaded, which is a rise of 47% over the year before. Despite lockdown restrictions causing High Street stores to close, 65 million boxed games were sold across the various markets, which is a rise of 0.8%.

In order to get a more accurate reading of the market share between boxed and digital, we have to remove countries that do not count both boxed and digital sales. We also have to subtract companies like Nintendo, Bethesda and CD Projekt, who do not share digital numbers with GSD. After doing that, we can see that 59% of games sold by tracked publishers were downloaded, with the remainder coming via physical sales. In 2019, less than 48% of sales were digital.

[...]

The biggest publisher of boxed games across Europe was Nintendo, with a market share of over 28%, more than double EA in second place. In terms of digital, Ubisoft is No.1 with a nearly 18% market share, again ahead of EA in second place.

In terms of consoles, PS4 was the biggest platform for downloads across the tracked publishers, accounting for 52% of sales -- PC was in second place with 27%. It's worth noting that the majority of the publishers that are sharing digital sales are primarily known for their console releases. It's also worth noting that Game Pass sales are not included with this data.

In terms of boxed games, it is still PS4 at the top with a 43% market share, although it is only narrowly ahead of Nintendo Switch, which has a 41% market share. This does vary across the continent. In France and Germany, Switch is the top performing console for boxed game sales, whereas PS4 is strong in Italy and Spain.

[...]

In terms of consoles sales in Europe, GSD takes in data from Benelux, France, Switzerland, Nordics, Spain and Italy. Across these markets, 5.59 million games machines were sold, which is a slight 1.9% drop over the year before.

It will come as little surprise that Nintendo Switch was comfortably the best-selling console of the year. Nintendo's console spiked in sales by more than 22% over the same period a year before. It sold almost three times as much as the second best-selling device: PS4, sales of which dropped 42% over 2019, which isn't too surprising when you consider the next PlayStation was released in November. PS5 was the third best-selling console of the year, followed by the Xbox Series machines (including both S and X iterations) and then Xbox One.

Although the number of consoles sold year-on-year declined, the revenue from these devices actually grew 12% to €1.7 billion. This is due to the higher price of the newer machines.

Switch dominated European sales, except in the Nordic region. In Denmark and Finland, PS4 was the best-selling console, while in Sweden PS5 was the most popular device.

[...]

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is No.1 once again, for the fourth time this year, despite a 13% drop in sales. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe stays at No.2 for the second consecutive week, with a 1% slip in sales.

It was very nearly a Nintendo top three, but Ring Fit Adventure missed out on third spot by just 52 units. The fitness game's sales rose 34% week-on-week, but couldn't quite topple Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which held on despite an 8% sales drop.

The only significant new boxed game to come out this year (so far) is Hitman 3, and that game is now down at No.17 with a 54% slide in sales week-on-week.

There was one new game in the charts, and that's Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthbound at No.36. The game was published by Maximum Games in the UK.

Lacrimosa of Dana only sold a couple of hundred units at launch if I recall
Depending on the week this would be enough to chart i guess. But yeah expectations are probably low and it doesnt help that the review code has been crashing like crazy on PS5 systems. Plus some people might just wait for the NSW/PC versions down the line.

Why even bother releasing new games at this point of you're Nintendo?

Craziness.

Ys not charting isn't a surprise at all, I can't imagine the Switch release in June will do any better either when you look at how the popular back catalogue games with legs hang around forever.

Didn't the Nioh Collection release last week, too?

We need those platform-specific charts again.

51 Worldwide Games just passed 100k in December and then 200k a month later.
It needed more than 6 months for the first 100k and then one month for the next.

December sales must have been insane. My guess is sales were getting somewhat close to 100k before December, and then also close to 200k at the end of December. Just needed a couple more January sales to tip over that 200k mark. But that would still suggest December basically doubled the game's sales, which is crazy! In a good way, of course.

STOP BUYING GTA V, I want GTA 6, which won't happen if V keeps selling so well lol.

Another enhanced edition for GTA V will fly of the shelf.

GTA 6 aint coming for a while sadly.

Seen lots of Clubhouse adverts during December, Nintendo was pushing it a lot.

Nevertheless that performance in Germany is pretty impressive!

Thought this was a good reminder of Nintendo's position, in the UK especially, just over seven years ago:

Super Mario 3D World will also be finally able to lay the spectre of Knack to rest in the UK.

Unless there's a Knack Deluxe for PS5 we don't know about?

Now 3D World will break the charts, set them on fire and blow them up into space.

Europe has been lagging behind Japan and America in terms of Switch adoption rates, so there's a lot of potential for growth left. Only 20.7m units of Switch and Switch Lite have been shipped in the region by the end of December 2020, so there's still a long way to go to hit 50m.

I think they'll manage to sell over 40mil units in Europe, maybe even 45mil, but never 50mil. Not even the PS4 got to 50mil, it's at 47mil now. Only the DS and the PS2 got sold over 50mil times in Europe, the Switch will just come close.
The Other regions will make up for it to surpass the DS and PS2 ww.

Very good start for 3D World, especially since the UK is under lockdown, i.e digital share should be higher than for past Mario titles.

great start, but yeah i can see how being released 5 months after 3D all stars might have slightly lowered people's excitement for another 3D mario game.

I wonder if there'll be some Mario fatigue at some point. I feel like there's a bunch of games in the charts (3D World, NSMBU Deluxe, MM2 and 3D All-Stars).

Unlikely, since they are all quality releases and they target different sections of the audience.
If they were shitty games...maybe, but if anything the opposite is happening. Switch is the first console for a lot families and gamers and they have some catching up to do.
