Overwatch is Blizzard's first new IP in 19 years and is a multiplayer FPS that pits two teams of 6 against each other in short, objective-based modes. The game is available on next-gen consoles and PC and currently has 4 multiplayer modes: 3 asymmetrical (one team attacks, one team defends) and 1 symmetrical (king of the hill). There are 22 heroes, each with unique abilities to choose from and fitting a specific role: Offense, Defense, Support, and Tank. Heroes have 2-3 abilities and an ultimate, which is charged up by doing damage to enemy heroes (it also charges up slowly over time). All abilities function on a cooldown and do not cost any resources to use, so you are free to use your abilities whenever they are off cooldown. There is also no ammo to pick up or run out of. You do have to reload when your clip runs out, but you have an unlimited supply of ammo. This helps focus the players on playing the objective rather than rationing their ammo during intense firefights.

What makes Overwatch unique is its hero selection and the ability to switch heroes in the middle of a game. This allows teams to change tactics on the fly as a match is progressing, and often a change in team composition can be the impetus for breaking through a defending team's chokepoint or halting an attacking team's push!

Lore
Overwatch takes place in a fictionalized version of Earth, in which humanity lives alongside a race of robots called the Omnics. However, this peace was not to last. 30 years before the start of the game, the Omnics, many of whom were military peacekeeping robots, went rogue and turned against humanity. This marked the beginning of the Omnic Crisis.

In response, the United Nations scoured the world for the best that humanity could offer and formed an elite strike team called Overwatch. With its strength and expertise, Overwatch managed to beat back the Omnics and end the Omnic Crisis. This ushered in a new era in which Overwatch expanded into a global peacekeeping force, operating all over the world. Over the next 30 years, Overwatch grew to become a vast coalition of the world's best soldiers and scientists and was revered all over the planet.

Under the surface, however, cracks were beginning to form. Accusations of human rights abuses began to surface, strife between members of the group led to an internal civil war, and a UN investigation along with an explosion at the Swiss headquarters led to Overwatch being officially disbanded. The world had lost the organization that saved it so many years ago, and all its members went their separate ways...

Until now. The world is once again in peril. Dark forces threaten world peace. The world needs its heroes. Are you ready?

As you play games you earn XP, which is applied to your profile after every game. You earn 4 XP for every second you are active in a game, as well as an XP bonus for the highest medal earned in a match. A gold medal is worth 150 XP, a silver medal is worth 100 XP, and a bronze medal is worth 50 XP. If you receive multiple medals, you will only get an XP bonus for the highest medal earned. For example, if you earned 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal, you will only receive an XP bonus of 150 XP. You also receive a 500 XP bonus if you win a match, a 250 XP bonus if you lose a match, a 200 XP bonus if you complete consecutive games in the same lobby, a 1,500 XP bonus for your first win of the day, and a 20% multiplier to all XP gained in a match if you're grouped up with friends. You do not gain any XP if you quit a match before it ends.

Every time your profile levels up, you unlock a loot box which contains 4 random cosmetic items. These can include skins, voice lines, sprays, victory poses, profile images, and Play of the Game intros. In typical Blizzard fashion there are rarity tiers for each cosmetic item, which range from common (white) to legendary (orange). You can also sometimes get credits in a loot box, either as its own drop or as the result of a duplicate item. Credits can be used to purchase any cosmetic item for any character, and prices for items vary based on rarity. At the high end, you will need 1,000 credits to purchase a legendary skin.

At low levels, leveling up is quick. The amount of XP required to level up increases up until you hit level 23, at which point it remains constant until you hit level 100. You will receive a new portrait frame every 10 levels. At level 100 you are "promoted," which gives you a new portrait frame theme and resets your level. Your cosmetic items are never reset. Overwatch also has achievements, which can be earned for performing various tasks in-game. Certain achievements will unlock general and hero-specific sprays that can be equipped.

ENDORSEMENT LEVELS
All players begin at endorsement level 1 and can progress to a max level of 5; every endorsement you receive impacts your endorsement levels. You will also receive a small amount of player experience for endorsing another player. Higher endorsement levels can help you get better groups in the Looking for Group tool.
MAINTAINING YOUR ENDORSEMENT LEVEL
Your endorsement level can decrease if you do not continue to receive endorsements or leave games before they're finished. Punishments within the reporting system may also strip players of their endorsement level and place them at level 0.
ENDORSEMENT REWARDS
You can occasionally earn Loot Boxes based on your current endorsement level, with higher endorsement levels resulting in more Loot Boxes. During special events, you'll receive event Loot Boxes (for example, Summer Games Loot Boxes).

Major changes were made to competitive play.
Blizzard introduced role queue on 7/18/2019

How Role Queue Works
With Role Queue, we're updating the matchmaking and queuing systems in Competitive Play and Quick Play so that players choose which role they want to play—tank, support, or damage—before a match even begins. The matchmaking system will then match two tanks, two supports, and two damage heroes to create a team, and upon entering match, players will select heroes within their chosen roles. At the end of a match (in both Competitive Play and Quick Play), players will return to the main menu and select their role before queuing for the next game.

Role Incentives and Queue Times
Each of the three roles will have its own queue, and players will be able to see estimates for the wait time for each at the role-selection screen. Several factors go into those estimates, but they'll generally reflect the number of players queuing for a particular role. To help incentivize a more even distribution of players across all roles, players who queue for roles that are currently in high demand may get a reward.

April 13, 2020

Starting April 13, we intend to address this by having a single, unified Hero Pool, allowing both the Overwatch League and Competitive Play to mirror each other as closely as possible and making a more consistent viewing and play experience. Here's how this will work:

  • To determine a week's Hero Pool, we'll compile hero play rates from high-level Competitive Play matches from the preceding two weeks. Heroes with play rates above a certain threshold will be eligible to be removed; the higher their play rate, the more likely they are to be removed. Based on that, one Tank, two Damage, and one Support will be randomly removed from play. (Note that heroes will not be removed two weeks in a row.)
  • At the end of each Sunday's Overwatch League matches, we'll announce the Hero Pool that will be used that upcoming week for both live Competitive Play and the Overwatch League. That pool will go into effect in the game Monday morning.
  • This process will occur every week of the Overwatch League regular season; during weeks that there are no Overwatch League matches, the same data will still be used to determine the Hero Pool and you will find out Monday morning.

No more Map Pool Rotation.

Ooh, shiny new OT just in time for Echo. Can confirm OW is still the best game, it just has something that other games don't.

After Nano-ing Mercy 2 times in the same game last nite, I am soo happy they added confirmation lol. 👍🏾

Yeah, that's hella helpful too, but I meant the skins glitch, some of those are impossible to get haha.

Reposting from the OWL thread, since people will be interested in drops and they will be enabled here:

Exhibition tourney with a 25k prize pool for NA and EU each. Open to everyone. Drops enabled, OWL/Contenders elegible to enter, but only 2 max per team. Every team must run Echo at all times.

Stocked to jump in and try some games with Echo.

Also lately I've been playing less around the meta, or one-tricking heroes to climb in ranked and I've been having a lot more fun. Losing more often is frustrating because I'm not as good at certain heroes, but at least I learn more which then gets applied universally. For example if I look at my positioning now compared to a couple months ago, it's crazy how much improvement I've made.

Pretty good that they put a no role lock competitive queue in for the nutjobs who are whining about role lock.

Have fun alternating between matches of 5 DPS and 1 tank, or GOATs.

Would we mind if this option was kept in inside Arcade? Seems like not only a good way to bring lapsed players around who hate 2-2-2 and a way to decrease DPS Queues overall, since they could go bananas in that mode, and still have an SR ranking to chase.

They added a Middle East servers but I don't see it as an option on PC.

Also, gonna be horrible on console since we can't pick servers so less players overall. I guess I can just join a EU party for comp.

There is no option to switch severs only region, you can hit shift+Ctrl+N to get the network graph and top left should be the server. Would imagine it starts with me.

You can also look at servers around you in the custom games in the lobby settings

Figured. I guess it will only switch to ME once there are enough players which is hard to imagine, I think. Game is kinda on life support.

Also, I played one comp game and felt it was QP. I destroyed enemy Echo with Bap but I just didn't feel it was comp at all lol. Multiple ults, flying moths everywhere. It was chaotic.

Will see ya guys next week.

Haha, play the "Competitive Open Queue" without role-lock if you're a dps player, just be prepared for 4-5 dps players on your team lol.

The moment Blizz added role queue this was the fate for every game mode ever without role lock.

Before role lock you would have dps heavy games in ranked or quick play but I still had people switching around most of the times aside from the occasional Hanzo main who refuses to switch. Since role lock was introduced I don't remember when I saw a classic quick play game without like 5 dps on both teams minimum

I'm not a fan of Echo's ultimate, but how do you design a character like that and somehow not have one of her lines be "♫Anything you can do, I can do better...I can do anything better than you♫"

Update bugged the game, at least on Xbox, can't connect to it after I see highlights, have to restart.

Anyway, Echo's so fun, I might be okay with how overtuned she is considering it's a very fun hero to expectate and play as. Did this nice little three 3K on my first match, still getting very used to her gun and projectile speed. Same match I doubled a Hog and ulted them off point for the win.

The 20+ minute queues might not be worth it, though.

Also, Ashe buffs came through right? Cause she feels so damn smooth.

Join dps queue for 25 minutes, someone on my team leave. Game cancelled.
Queue for another this time 30 minutes, that leaver is now on the enemy team, he left. Game cancelled.
Quit the game.

Adding a role-queue free competitive mode tells me they knew role queue was a mistake but don't want to admit it. At least the map rotation system is gone now.

Hell yeah they did,
st,small,507x507-pad,600x600,f8f8f8.jpg

Most fun dps got even more fun

although this happened a few days ago not this patch

Echo is fun

I just did 24K damage with Ashe in a match we lost because our Moira was inting. Legitimately inting, like, she wasn't purposefully healing. I was popping off so much :(

Who's that emote from btw? I might need to drop a sub lol

the next experimental card changes are targeted at CC reduction across multiple heroes.

we're not currently working on bastion changes but are happy to listen to any feedback you have.

Well there is also the fun factor and those no role lock games had more hero variety, more people switching around, every game is a different comp etc.

Yea the fun factor of having 4 mercy 1 tricks, the zen solo heals, waiting till the last second to fill for the last person to give us our 4th dps with the solo zen heals the running across map because we're on defense and I'm pissed before the fighting even starts.

There were games I gave up before the first fight because we had bad team comps, I've had far more fun in role queue then before it.

They already nerfed CC a couple of months ago (Brig stun is less, Mei slowing isn't the same etc).

What do you think this will be? And will they adjust high mobility heroes like Hammond as well?
