Cut planet talk at 14:55. Note place spoilers for game...

They talk about overland map for Terra 2 was planned as big as monarch and how game kinda ends quickly which is how I felt.

Scylla replaced the cut time instead and they added content there.

Love this game. Amazing how soon they had a working game eg stealth system given the small team size shown at video below.

Kotaku ran an article with concept art for the game a while back, and this piece stuck out to me. Perhaps this was the cut planet? It could also just be an early version of Byzantium or another area in the game.

They had about 6 months of work done on the planet. It wouldn't surprise me if they end up repurposing it for the DLC.

Among other things, there was also a cut companion. SAM was added later in development as a replacement.

The No Clip documentary is a fantastic watch. It gave me a new appreciation for the game.

I've watched the no clip documentary and I appreciate what they tried to do with this game - I absolutely love their past work on Fallout, some of my favorite games ever.

Unfortunately I think this was a giant dud of a game, I liked practically nothing about it. The game was just entirely flat and bland with boring quests and characters, topped off with unbalanced game mechanics, shitty itemization and a worthless perk system. Sometimes mediocrity can feel worse than a straight up crap game, because you can see how much was poured into a game that just didn't come together at all. This was one of the biggest disappoints for me in a long time.

I think Obsidian will have more time for their next projects. Outer Worlds was a fun game but it could have been a lot more. The game started off pretty well on the first planet and all up to The Groundbreaker, but once we reached Monarch things fell quickly downhill. Maybe Monarch should have been cut :P

That being said, while I look forward more to their rumored spin on an Elder Scrolls-type of game, the Outer Worlds IP has a lot of potential for Obsidian if done right. The studios might need to be bolder about which story of capitalism they want to tell though.

Same, Tim talks in one of the Noclip docs about how if they biggest complaint they hear is there's not enough then they're happy, but for me what is present is just dull and lifeless. And outside of one or two characters, how the hell do Obsidian mess up the writing?

I was surprised how few people actually worked on the game. I can see how its disappointing to people since other games have a lot of "man" hours put into them but I personally thought as a new IP with a small budget it was a great result and really look forward to the next release

I agree, the difference in quality between this game and their more recent previous projects (Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity) is staggering. I have the impression they tried to make a smaller version of New Vegas but the only aspect they managed to import straight from 2010 is the combat system. The world feels lifeless and unrealistic, the writing is one dimensional and stale and everything else from the enemy variety to the progression systems is just...not very good. It's probably the first Obsidian game that I really disliked.

Tyranny was also a new IP on a small budget with a lot of creativity and risks and that turned out amazing. In contrast The Outer Worlds, ironically, feels like it was made in a factory.

It was also held back by current gen consoles, in world design and npc content:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/04/the_outer_worlds_was_held_back_by_console_memory_budgets

Based on this, I guess they want their next project to be next gen only, although it does not go hand in hand with xbox releasing no next gen only titles in the first two years, which is to me a major bummer. However since development of a new major game takes at least 2-3 years, we probably can expect their next game to be next gen only.

Very interesting. Speaking of Outer Worlds, I wonder when they will have news on the DLC. Maybe it was planned as a stealth release for Microsoft's E3 release?

Absolutely loved the game, one of my favourites last year (even if the Perks weren't anything special). I specifically liked their confidence of making a shorter rpg instead of another 100+ game.

The doc is cool, no clip are good at this and it's good to see people speak passionately about their craft. I wasn't aware the team was smaller, but I don't think it changes much just because it was impressive that a small team produced it. End results were the same for some of us.

The game was too easy, so easy that it made everything just feel pointless. Combat soon had you decimating enemies without thinking, upgrading skills was too generous and soon I had enough to be able to bypass most obstacles without having to choose, and exploration rewarded you with so much stuff you can sell that you could buy out shops too soon.

No challenge, no meaningful choice elements, kind of sealed its fate for me.

Taken on its own as a game, it's fine I think. Your mileage will vary depending on how desperate you were for a new WRPG. But taken with the context of creating a new framework under the Unreal engine it's really exciting.

I really enjoyed it and thought the story/quality of dialogue and character was exceptional.

Really looking forward to a sequel / DLC.

I recall in the end credits there was a bunch of personal messages from the dev team which was really cute.
