A black man who was a guest at a hotel in Portland, Ore., was asked to leave by police and hotel staff while he was making a call in the lobby.

The Oregonian reported on Wednesday that Jermaine Massey, who is from Washington state, was visiting Portland for the first time to attend a Travis Scott concert when he received a late phone call from his mother.

Massey, who was reportedly registered as a guest at a DoubleTree Hotel in Portland, decided to return his mother's call from the lobby before going up to his room. While he was on the call, a hotel security guard asked him to leave and later called the police.

In the first of a series of videos, Massey can be seen sitting in a chair as a security guard named Earl calls the police on him.

When he asks the guard why he is calling the police, he says "to escort you off the property."

"Because what and I'm staying here?" Massey asks.

"Not anymore," the guard replies.

"I didn't do anything to you," Massey goes on to say, "I'm sitting here taking a phone call and you interrupting my phone call."

"Did you interrupt any of these other people here?" Massey can be heard saying before turning his camera to show other guests in the lobby.

Police can be seen arriving to the hotel in another clip and questioning Massey and hotel staff about the incident.

"They already had in their minds that they didn't want me there so I waited for the cops to show up and when they did, I explained my side of the story and they didn't want to hear it," Massey wrote on Instagram.

"They told me that since the hotel requested me to leave, that if I didn't I would be considered a trespasser and would be thrown in jail. I complied and cooperated and was not issued a refund for my room. I packed my stuff and went to another hotel."

There used to be a law where it was illegal to be in Oregon while black so maybe they were looking at old laws.

What are filing this under y'all?

Checking on loved ones while black?

Based on Funyarinpa's quotes, I think it's safe to file it under "Racist jerk hates black people."

Given that the guy had a paid room, I'm shocked the hotel was able to just have him removed with no refund.

He should have a slam dunk case against Double Tree for this.

Sometimes, hitting folks in the pocketbook is the only thing that makes a difference. If it makes life tough for this hotel owner, too bad, so sad. Don't staff your hotel with racist shits.

I think what's always amazing about these is that these people must, at some point, even for a split second, think, "This could look bad and cost me my job." Even that doesn't stop them. The urge to be a racist piece of shit is so, so strong.

This is baffling. Cops didn't really have a choice because it's private property (once they ask you to leave and you don't, you're immediately trespassing), but I can't even imagine what was going through the dude's mind. The cops could actually have cited the guy for wasting their time. Unless there's a separate two hour video of something else, Double Tree is going to have a rough Christmas - probably a franchised location though, so the franchise owner is the one on the hook for the non PR aspects.

Management of the DoubleTree hotel told The Oregonian that the incident involving Massey was likely a misunderstanding and that the hotel staff does not racially discriminate against people.

Sue, get everyone involved fired, and use the money to move somewhere less white. Make sure their names stay connected to that video on the internet forever.

By now it is obvious that being black in the US is a crime.

I called and asked for Earl.

Had a very long pause followed by the receptionist telling me he isn't working today. Lol.

I don't fucking get it man. They straight up scammed him out of his room.

I hope he sues the shit out of the hotel and gets the asshole (and his bosses, since it seems like they'd rather try and paper over this than take action) fired.

Great fucking joke.

Much smart you are.

Hey, the joke had more effort than the zero content OP. Not sure why you'd take offense, unless you're a fan of drive-by posts.

Management of the DoubleTree hotel told The Oregonian that the incident involving Massey was likely a misunderstanding and that the hotel staff does not racially discriminate against people.

Was the guard on Ambien?

I don't fucking get it man. They straight up scammed him out of his room.

This. I'm not seeing any claim of him having broken any law or even a hotel rule that would give rise to evicting a paid guest.

If you're drunk and disorderly, no one's going to cry when the hotel kicks you out and keeps your $$$.

But by all reported accounts so far, this guy was on his phone, in the lobby. Which is an exceedingly normal thing to do.

I don't get how this could be a "misunderstanding" based on what has been reported.

Shit like this is a regular occurrence for Black people. The emergence of cellphone cameras means a lot more people can see first hand what we go through, and make it a lot harder to deny the ingrained racism in American society.

the guard probably was using race in his decision to interrupt Massey in the first place. The whole situation could have been resolved without calling the police and getting him kicked out but the guard had an axe to grind. You don't remember your room number? What's your name? I can check with the front desk. congrats to Massey on his settlement money.

Fuck Earl, but also, fuck the police here.
It's so bullshit how they act like they must follow the orders of a hotel security guard.
I hope he sues everyone.

Hopefully "Earl" loses his job and they have to call the cops to escort his ass off the property.

Saw this earlier. It puts into perspective what happens when you just follow what you're told.

Man is kicked out without refund from a hotel he was staying in for no reason at all (I know the reason, it's not a reason to me). The man complied with every request at the same time making his grievances known along the way. The response from the hotel is FUCKING BULLSHIT!! Give that man hiAs money back, accommodate him for a weeks stay in any of your hotels and fire that prick that singled him out. Anything less is insufficient and should be put on blast until they fix it.

Nothing in the article about the hotel trying to make it right.

Wonder what lies they'll make up to try and get out of this.

Its scary to think how relatively calm the victim took this because if this happened to me I would not have left calmly.

Hope Earl loses his job and this impacts his employment in the future.

Then they should give him his money back. All they're saying either way is that they fucked a customer out of their room for zero reason.
