Setsuna was wildly disappointing, and while good reviews could have gotten me to drop cash, I'm afraid it's a no go.

Sorry, RPG Tokyo Factory. I wanted you to succeed.

I really wanted to like I am Setsuna after hearing so many comparisons to Chrono Trigger. I gave it maybe ten hours or so before I just couldn't keep going because of how boring it was. It felt like a paint-by-the-numbers JRPG with only some basic combat mechanics that reminded me of CT. The audio visaul presentation also felt like a phone game.

Was Lost Sphear any better? I have to admit this game looks intriguing, but so did I am Setsuna before I played it.

Played the demo. It was solid but definitely not worth the cost of a full price AAA game.

Hopefully TRF gets it right next time

Watching a stream and it looks good. Combat seems to just get better and better (which is no surprise). Music and presentation seems great as well. I really wanna buy it, but as has been stated the price seems a bit high for this type of game? Was the same problem with the other 2 games though this ones seems to have a bit more production value to it.

Will just save my points and buy it on sale in the future.

Well, I've put about 10 hrs into Oninaki now but I am dropping it for now; I also kind of enjoyed the demo but so far its been more or less exactly like the demo; the same four enemies, same three types of maps and even though I have opened up the skilltree of one Daemon quite a bit it doesnt really make a difference; The combat feels super repetive. Out of boredom I figured I should just try casual and play it like some Diablo clone, even the combat seems to behave the same regardless of difficulty setting.

The combat just starts to feel extremely clunky and boring and you get more and more annoyed by shitty hitboxes, no cancelling and the fact that everything takes forever. Its not really hard, just super grindy and boring.

I figured there would be more to it than whats in the demo but there really isnt.

I enjoyed Setsuna quite a lot and sort of liked Lost Sphear even, but this is my first buyers remorse in quite a while, and I mean, I bought Left Alive....

They just don't have a comparable the budget to what the old days had.

That's a poor excuse. With all the improvements in engines & tools, you don't need the kind of budget they had in the old days to replicate them. And I can guarantee that they had a drastically bigger budget than we did with Cosmic Star Heroine (which was 2 full-timers working for about 3-4 years + a couple of contractors who did the audio, plus an outsourced Switch port).

I played the demo and felt the combat was not very engaging, for those of you who played it a lot since release does the combat get any better later on?

Also is there some sort of endgame?

Man, reviews are all over the place. As someone who liked Setsuna, I'm guessing I'll probably like this more than most, but I think I'm still going to wait for a sale. Too many JRPGs to play right now!

I've played about an hour of the demo on the Switch and I actually find it pretty enjoyable so far.

I had no idea what kind of game this was and was pleasantly surprised they went with real time action combat over their previous two entries which were turn based. The graphics are nothing amazing but still a much better offering than what they showcased with Setsuna and Lost Sphear, for sure.

Still, I can already see why the reviews are inconsistent. I feel like this type of game with the way it looks should be targeting 60fps, yet I feel like this game can't even keep a solid 30fps, even in docked mode which is disappointing. This makes the combat feel a bit slow and sluggish. I would have also liked to see some sort of block button to diminish damage or a smoother/quicker transition from attacking and dashing away. I'm still early on so I haven't unlocked multiple Daemons and abilities so perhaps combat does open up a bit more the longer you play. Speaking of the Daemon function, I think you can clearly see Tokyo RPG Factory borrowed many ideas and the overall concept from Blades in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which isn't a bad thing at all because I loved that system and collecting Daemons in this and unlocking their backstory and abilities might be very fun.

I also have some other smaller nitpicks. I would have really enjoyed if all dialogue was voiced and if characters had drawn portraits on dialogue boxes when speaking. It's weird they did portraits for Setsuna and then abandoned it for the next two games. Perhaps Fire Emblem: Three Houses spoiled me with these two things because normally games don't have everything voiced like that, but I really feel like dialogue portraits are a must as they make me feel more connected to the character.

Also, the story premise seems very interesting and extremely somber, so I'm intrigued and want to play and know more.

I'll play the demo until it's over and like DQXI your progress carries over to the full game if you decide to buy it. Not sure if I want to spend $50 on this, but I will definitely nab this game whenever it goes on sale in the future.

I already got burned after dropping $10 on I am Setsuna and the reviews are pretty bad for this, hope huge pass for me. They should take a stab at SRPG in vein of FFT next

I dunno, the reviews look all over the place to me.

It is a clear love it or hate it game. The demo should give you an idea on how it will be.

Also not sure how spending $10 is getting burned? Like I have spent way way more and gotten way way less than what Setsuna offered.

Personally I have enjoyed the Tokyo Factory games for what they are, I haven't paid full price for them and I will probably await a sale here too.

I enjoyed the demo immensely, but I don't have the time right now.

In retrospect, I am Setsuna is probably they're best game and not at all a bad game. One problem with I am Setsuna is that it was cursed with being the next "Chrono Trigger" due to its battle system in the same way Octopath Traveler was cursed as being "Final Fantasy VI" due to it's visuals. When people start dropping those legendary names and you play the games they may not be bad games per se, but they're not Chrono Trigger and certainly not Final Fantasy VI.

Like I said that's just one problem, not to say the game was perfect beyond an unfair comparison because it wasn't, but from my demo impressions of Oninaki I'd put Setsuna as TRPGF's highlight.
octopath had many issues that were seperate from being compared to ffvi. And that comparison was only with the art style.

Looks like we're getting yet another mediocre game from Tokyo RPG Factory (fitting name btw). I don't think this studio will last much longer.

Time, Setsuna was a low budget and ultimately boring game. There are a lot of upcoming great games, if you like rpg there is trail of cold steel 3, greedfall, ff8 remaster, nnk1 next month and im getting them all. I just dont have time for a mediocre game

The demo has controller problems :(

I actually like the art style except how the female characters don't wear pants. The story feels very bland though.

Playing the game now, and I feel like there's no incentive to level up the other Daemons other than the first one. She has a dash and really good skills, and every time you get a new Daemon you need to start with them low leveled and no skills/passives other than the initial one. I'm up to five Daemons now and most of them are way too slow and their avoidance skills aren't as good as the first one's dash.

The scythe one is pretty solid. But the bigger issue is I'm just starting to hate the game. I enjoyed the demo but the combat, and especially bosses are just getting too tedious now. Shit just ain't fun.

if XP were shared it would help a lot, as it is you spend a lot of time eyeballing the skill tree wondering what to spend your colourless orbs on to get weapons up to the point where they're actually fun to use

my review hasn't gone up yet which is a bit annoying :T

I've only found a few Daemons that I like to use. But it seems they dump so many of these things on me.

Been playing this for a review discussion that will be going up soon. It's nothing remarkable at all, but if you're in the mood for what it offers (a pretty easy hack-and-slashy action RPG with nice visuals and an unfortunately budget soundtrack), it does deliver.

The story goes in some genuinely surprising places early and often, which keeps me coming back. Strong localization too. I haven't played Lost Sphear, but from what I've heard of it I'd say this is Tokyo RPG Factory's best game yet, although that's a somewhat low bar.

It's also a great game for when you're playing on handheld mode and are not in a situation where you can use headphones. What's there is quality, but the half-existent soundtrack ensures you're never missing too much on that front. Probably my biggest disappointment with this game.

It's unfortunate that the Square Enix studio so many of us were so excited for when it was unveiled has churned out content of a caliber that calls for barely over 100 replies in a review thread.

I feel like Oninaki actually is somewhat of a return to form for TRF. While Setsuna was solid, I found Lost Sphear to be really boring and disappointing. This on the other hand is solid again based on the demo, albeit a tad uninspiring overall. Still, with how Lost Sphear went and their games becoming more expensive, I'm really not all that inclined to buy it.
Add to that the upcoming high profile titles on the Switch and the lack (?) of a retail version... Yeah, no, thanks.
E: It actually has a retail version here in Europe, buuut only through the SE online store. That's still shit.

Sigh. I have to agree with you. I felt the exact same way when I played Setsuna. Very paint-by-numbers. I did play through to the end, but it's just a mediocre title. I'm so sad to say that.

Lost Sphear had, I think, one of the worst demos I've ever tried. Turned me off entirely.

Oninaki shows promise. I like the initial story setup, and the combat was fun. It looks gorgeous in my opinion but something tells me the overall experience will feel a touch mediocre. I hope that's not the case when I play it after it goes on sale for $19.99!

did anyone buy this? how did it get completely ignored like this? i guess this must have completely bombed and there isn't even a wikipedia page for it.

anyways, i tried the demo and it feels like one of those generic DS jrpgs. there's nothing interesting or exciting about it. they are selling this for 66 dollars CAD, which i find absolutely ridiculous.

I am Setsuna and Lost Sphear killed most of the goodwill they had. And then this turned out to be another middling game by them.
I will eventually get it, the game's problem is that people just have too much on the plate to make time for something that doesn't super stand out.

Lost Sphear and Setsuna had similar issues in that they just didn't stand out enough to justofy the time and money. I have enjoyed Lost Sphear enough for the price I paid for a cart but it is my in between game, and I wouldn't call it amazing by any stretch.

So I am taking the same approach here. Wait flr the cart to get to like $20

They were founded to capitalise on the success of Bravely Default, and were meant to make games that were like the JRPG classics of yesteryear and specifically on home consoles(which just meant PS4 at the time).
Their mission statement was, like, "We were all fans of classic SNES JRPGs and we want to make games as great as those ones were!", but from my experience, it's like they took the most superficial cues from that era or just missed the point of "what made those games GREAT". Games like Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler are MORE attuned to how the "classic JRPG" were like.

I didn't expect that literally nobody here will be playing it lol
Gave the demo a good go, it certainly was bad, just not inspiring or impressive, and, based on the level of reception it's getting on here, I know that isn't a harsh assessment. I'll probably play it over the next year or so, once the price drops a bit.

How many games do you think this studio has left? Whether they're turning a profit or not, their reputation is in tatters. They were very hyped up and now they're basically a Gust-tier dev without the loyal fanbase.
