Maybe I was just too young to appreciate it at the time, but this game is better then I remember. I'm having a really good time. Though fuck that water puzzle and roof top boss camera.

The only thing I'll say that this remaster has over the original release is definitely the soundtrack. The music felt somewhat more epic but what we've been given is still good though.
Yeah, I quite like the soundtrack, quite a few memorable tracks. I can't remember the original soundtrack, though, I'll need to go back and listen to it.

Anyway, about to S rank it. Only two more trophies after that, one for not upgrading anything or using jewels, and the other for not using any health items. Will take a bit more patience those ones.

Hoho! I haven't used any jewels or health items so I'll get those trophies but I've upgraded the weapons and orbs. On my next playthrough I'll just do a run through with the sword and my speed run with the Bishamon.

Was there any particular reason Capcom changed the soundtrack? Seems like an odd change to make. Glad the English voices didn't change up in the enhancement.

Here's comparison to Samanosuke Theme, I don't mind this one but still prefer original. It's the last boss theme I I don't like as much in the remaster where as the original has a build up leading to the fight. Original music gives a more samurai vibe.

I'm not a fan of that, bishamon sword ftw.
It's cool in the sense that all previous elements were represented and we got some new ones added as well. Idk what game had better weapons though, Onimusha 2 or Onimusha 3. Chigo, Kuga and Tenso + Raizen, Ennryu and Shippu might be better than Rekka Ken, Burraito, Senpumaru, Hyojinyari, and Dokoutsui.

Think out of all the weapons in Onimusha my favorite is Ennryu, just love the design. I didn't play 2 as much back in the day so not sure what my favorite would be, probably Hyoujin-Yari and in 3 I would say Kuga.

I was going to do it on this playthrough, but then I remembered you can only do it on Normal.

Also, I think it was because the original composer used a ghost writer. I think they also changed some of the VA too, but could be wrong.

The entire series is like that, with peak cheese being the english dub on Oni 2. You better hope there is a japanese audio option for that one. The story in the games definitely never lived up to the opening cut scenes.

Onimusha 2 has some reallllllyyyy cheesy and super-anime moments but I would say 3 is by far and away the cheesiest. It was the only story of the 4 that I didn't enjoy at all. The others have lots of cool/memorable cutscenes to make up for it. 3 just has the opening and the rest is crap

What about the battle where you fight hundreds of Genma? I think Onimusha 3 is 2nd to worst, only surpassed by Onimusha; Dawn of Dreams but yea, it dropped the ball hard compared to that teased ending at the climax of Onimusha 2. It read as if Sam and Jubei would meet and clash somehow, but maybe I'm basing that in part with the inscription of something you can read in the room where you get the Bishamon Sword in Onimusha 1.

Fuck, that guy messed it up for everybody. But I mean, what's the harm in a ghost writer so as long as they were paid and don't have any complaints? Doesn't change the fact that the music was good. Well good to know. I remember reading about that here but I didn't know that composer was responsible for some of the music in the original Onimusha release.

Also does anyone know what was different in Genma Onimusha compared to this one? Never played Genma but people keep saying that they should've remastered that one as opposed to the PS2 release.

Read this: http://onimusha.wikia.com/wiki/Genma_Onimusha:

There were so many good extras, it is a shame it wasn't the version that got remastered.

Cool, thanks. I saw that the magical attacks can be charged now, which is pretty cool. It's similar to the inclusion of charged special attacks in Onimusha 2 but I would've liked if this made a return too. That Tower Guardian boss fight looked good as well. Yea, I would've been in favor of this getting ported over instead. Not sure how I'd cope with not using any curatives or enhancers when green souls make enemies faster and stronger though. I'm trying tom get to the bottom of the Dark Realm without any curatives so I can get the trophy and its a pain in the ass. I've died at least 7 times.

I think I'm in a minority that likes Onimusha 3 the best. I loved going through France as Sam and Japan as Jacque. Seeing past-Sam with all of his Onimusha 1 weapons was awesome too.

I replayed all 4 games last year and I genuinely do not understand peoples' hatred for Dawn of Dreams. Outside of Minokichi there isn't anything super anime about the game and the story is far more grand/"epic" than the others in the series. *shrugs*

It has the worst Issen in the series and that's one of the main reasons I play onimusha games.

Yea...nah. Agree to disagree I guess. Dawn of Dreams completely abandons the formula and emulates DMC moreso than Onimusha itself. The game is crazy easy in terms of doing criticals compared to the prior games with the inclusion of magic criticals and such.

The English version of Dawn of Dreams was tuned out of whack. You get too few red souls to power up the weapons you find, so you constantly have underpowered weapons, knowing that you'll just get a new one in a little bit anyway.

The JP version is superior in this regard.

I don't think DoD held my interest long enough to beat the game. I remember quitting pretty soon after getting Ohatsu because it made everything ridiculously easy.

Been playing Warlords but I kinda feel like this isn't tuned for non tank controls. Hasn't been difficult so far and I just got Enryu.

Tank controls with the switch d-pad is horrendous. I like them with a proper d-pad, I replayed re-make and RE4 in the PS4 with the d-pad and had no problems at all...maybe I need to give them more time...

BTW, am I supposed to backtrack to the treasure chests with questions once I find the corresponding diary, right? I found the first chest and only had the first diary and they don't seem to be related at all....

RE games were awful on the PSP-1000 for the same reason.

For those of you on PC this game doesn't support 4K. Highest is something like 1440p. If you want 4K go to Steam\userdata\Number\761600\remote and edit PCConfig.dat file to adjust the width and height res.

Snagged this game on an impulse buy earlier tonight and am blazing through it. I dabbled in Onimusha 1 and 2 back in the PS2 days but only finished 3 and Dawn of Dreams (loved Dawn of Dreams at the time) so I'm surprised at how briskly paced this game is. It still has that exploration based Resident Evil template but the progression and item finding/usage is so much more simple and linear. I forgot how much nuance and satisfaction there is in the combat for Onimusha 1 though, and totally forgot that Issen was even in this game (I remember it from 2).

I just got to the part where you
play as Kaede and get the Red Key after Samunosuke gets trapped.

That's about the half way point right?

Also, I hate how fluid and natural the modern controls feel in this version. I'm sticking to the D-pad for tank controls out of purity, but ignoring the left stick is tough.

Even though I got quite lost at times, by hour 2:30 I had already finished the Dark Realm. Managed to complete it in under 4 hours with rank A.

This game is a gem.

Kind of glad I forgot almost all of it, it's like I'm playing fresh again.

Although I had that awkward moment when someone walked in on that early cutscene with the princess crawling away from the big ass demon ..... and the camera is almost positioned to focus on it's crotch ........

Bring on Oni 2, that one was the shit (and gorgeous at the time as far as I can remember, made me dream of PS2 developed old school Resi's and what could be .......)

The 3000 does. The 1000 does not. It might be better than the switch, but because they seem to be separate buttons, as opposed to one unit like a PS1 or PS2 controller, it's more difficult to control classic RE games on the machine.
I see.

In any case, Onimusha looks like the kind of game that would greatly benefit from actual analog movement as opposed to sticking with tank controls.

It would and does, but it's best to play with a mix, because otherwise it's not hard to run straight back into the welcoming and of a monster when the camera angle changes.

Dang, I did not remember this game being so short! Popped it in to mess around for a few minutes and then just ended up beating it in the same night. It holds up well but definitely "felt" much smaller than I remembered. I hope the rest of the series gets remastered, that was a fun trip down memory lane I'd like to take again.

Sorry if this has already been answered but does the Switch version have in-game trophies? For example, the Mega Man X collection has a list of challenges on all consoles, including the Switch, that corresponds to the trophy / achievement list.

I'm asking because the portablity aspect is tempting but I've always loved getting the Platinum on the Resident Evil games. I don't care about the trophies themselves, I use them more as a kind of checklist.

Is there a reason they only remastered the first game and didn't do an HD collection like Devil May Cry?

I'm gonna guess it's because Oni 2 also has prerendered backgrounds and it's more time consuming and costly to facelift, so they just focused on Oni 1. The third and fourth games are fully 3D so I imagine those would be easier to port over.

I love it too, I actually don't know which one I prefer between 1 and 3. 3 is also great on PC with the widescreen mod.

Besides what SirKai said. I also think it was a pricing thing. Having all 4 games would've been a $60 price point. Capcom doesn't really go past $30 for the HD stuff. So better to do them indiviually like they do Resident Evil stuff not called Revations

How do I not die/get hit in this game? I pretty much remember why I never finished it when I was younger lol, but I want to finish it this time.

It's a little easier with the new controls, but I have to fight the camera changes now.

First boss fight was easy, but I have trouble fighting the big pig monster with the axe.

Blocking works absurdly well against a *lot* of moves in the game. Multiple seemingly difficult bosses have their entire movesets neutralized by blocking, lol.

Some enemies have unblockable heavy attacks, and for those, there's at least a long windup and Samanosuke has a really agile side-dodge (and magic attacks are often sufficiently "heavy" and quick to initiate that they'll stun the boss out of their attack animation before it connects, if you feel like getting aggressive and conserving some of your magic for when it serves a defensive *and* offensive purpose instead of spamming it whenever available, though the latter has its advantages too since an empty magic bar gets you more magic bar refill drops from enemies).

I think the new non-tank controls actually make dodging trickier, for what it's worth, even if they make a lot of other stuff easier.

Got the platinum.

It was quite easy to run through the game not upgrading anything or using any healing items until the last two bosses, quite the difficulty spike. I ended up making a save near the end so I could upgrade some things, but still not use any health items. That was probably the hardest trophy for me. After doing that I went back to do it without upgrading anything but used health items, and that was very easy, did it first go.

Anyway, let's hope more Onimusha is to come.

That's a smart way to handle it.

The big Marcellus fight at the end is pretty much completely neutralized by blocking, btw, but yeah Fortinbras - simply by virtue of the fact that he's got a ridiculous amount of health, his attacks are all pretty easy to block or evade - is gonna be really rough on the special trophy runs if you don't get the Bishamon Sword (and finishing the Dark Realm without upgrades/without using healing items will basically be just as difficult as *not* doing that and going up against Fortinbras without it, so...)
