One Piece mangaka Eiichiro Oda has received a wave of backlash towards his recently announced upcoming interview with Nobuhiro Watsuki due to the Rurouni Kenshin mangaka's widely known child pornography conviction.

On March 4th, Japanese news site Oricon News reported that "a dialogue between Mr. Kazuki and the author of "ONE PIECE", Eiichiro Oda" would take place on April 24th to commemorate the opening of the 25th Anniversary Rurouni Kenshin Exhibition.

Following the announcement, fans took to social media to express their discomfort and disbelief towards the coming interview, with many specifically criticizing Oda for his continued association with a convicted pedophile due to Watsuki's 2017 arrest and subsequent conviction for possessing "multiple DVDs with videos of nude girls in their early teens and other materials."

It should be noted that Oda was once Watsukis assistant Mangaka.
Doesn't make his decision to do the interview any better though. Disappointing.

I mean doesn't really change how disgusting this actually is. And I'm pretty sure Japan has just as as many folks that are upset about that.

The sales numbers for the Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido manga, the upcoming live action movie releases and the very fact that there is an exhibition being held says otherwise, I'd think...

My view is that it's not really any of our business considering we don't know them personally (including their relationship) but hey, the Internet's going to Internet.

I was JUST thinking today "boy I sure am glad Oda hasn't been involved in some scandal!", while introducing One Piece to a friend.

Definitely not a good look :/

This place is always quick to judge people, except when their favorite video game is involved, so I'm not surprised.
It's totally not our business if Oda wants to conduct interview with his teacher, and there's like 0 harm in that.
Watsuki is disgusting, but I wouldn't expect his previous assistant to totally cut ties with him.
Oda might have owed him a lot for his current success.

I'd agree with you if they were doing this on their own time. But publicly holding an interview together means it's open to commentary, no?

Pretty much It's ordered from Shueisha to promote exhibition event.

So what was this guys sentence? A slap on the wrist?

200,000 Yen Fined.

User Warned: Inappropriate generalisation.
Given Japan's view on stuff like this, not surprising, unfortunately. Blegh.
Didn't they spend Christmas together, or was that last Christmas?
Not sure about that, but to celebrate the start of the Reiwa era, Inagaki (writer for Eyeshield 21, Dr. Stone) had a bunch of Jump authors over at his house to celebrate, and they also did a compilation of a sketches for his 8-year-old son.

Exactly. If Oda wants to stay in contact with the guy, go for it. But an interview like this? Nah.
So what was this guys sentence? A slap on the wrist?
$1,900 fine.

I thought Kenshin would have been shoved under the rug and given no attention, but the industry is celebrating it? Reminding me of all the celebs clapping for Roman Polanski's movies.

A few mean tweets doesn't really constitute a backlash. It's a super shitty decision on Oda's part to do this - and I don't support it and feel people are right to criticise - but until the Japanese fanbase pick it up and there's a noticeable decline on sales, all this is is a few prominent westerners tweeting out their disappointment.
Given that the two of them have a history together, I can understand the want for an interview, but I really wish it wouldn't happen.

Yeah lets blame Oda, and ignore the magazine shonen jump for still giving him work and doing exhibitions. If Japan society accepts him in then why are we holding Oda in a higher standard than the rest?

It's the second time that Oda has decided to not distance himself, at least public wise, from a pedophile.

I'm start to believing he is kind of shit.

You are making an offensive generalization.
Pedophilia is definitely not ok in Japan, and those so called otaku who likes loli are looked down upon there.

I mean Japan is the country who literally has loli porn not forbidden.
You can buy child idol dvds, where children are in swimsuits, licking white icecream.
A manga and anime industry which sexualizes drawn children and teenagers.
A world known mangaka, who got a slap on the wrist for CP and still continue in the industry and apparently not many in Japan see it as bad.
An AV industry who still has a "loli genre".
A pop idol industry with underaged girls in miniskirts.

I'm not surprised tbh, if the Rurouni Kenshin IP didn't die or the guy wasn't blacklisted after the sentence, then this is really a japan's society issue here.

Disgusting btw, but they consume loli crap so again, not that surprising.

Revised law banning child porn possession goes into effect

A revised law banning the possession of child pornography in Japan goes into effect Wednesday. Previously, only the production and distribution of child porn had been banned, not its possession. The Diet enacted the law in July 2014, but in order to encourage disposal of material, the penalties...
Producing, distributing and owning loli porn are all illegal in Japan.

Also as I said, people who likes manga sexualizing little girls are in extreme minority and looked down upon in Japan, just as it is everywhere else.
Loli section in AV is not only present in Japan. Child pornography also exists in other countries, including west.

Maybe stop with the offensive generalization if you have no clue what you're talking about.

Fairly certain they're talking about loli manga/anime porn and the like.

Now anyone who "possesses child pornography for the purpose of satisfying his/her sexual interest" faces imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to one million yen.

The ban excludes manga comics -- those aimed at adults as well as children, anime videos and computer-generated graphics, following calls to protect freedom of expression.

I always wondered why the whole loli stuff got so much popular in recent years and considering that the article is from 2015, I may have my answer now...

Are you stupid?

How can they be in the minority, when even long running Shounen manga series and anime sexualize underaged children.

tumblr_inline_p771p5WZCG1ub2929_1280.png

CFe23Od.png

Or one of the most profitable mobile games FGO with designs like Wu Zetian.

And loli sections in AV isnt present? Sorry, but seems you do not have a clue what you are talking about. These are not real underaged actresses, but petite actresses in titles such as "petite loli sister everyday" and whatnot together with Shotacon.

Furthermore you still have child idol gravure DVDs.

en.wikipedia.org

Junior idol - Wikipedia

oncerning the contents of the titles put on sale, these include, in general terms, pictures or footage of the idols trying out a variety of outfits, such as school uniforms, bathing suits, gym clothes, yukata or even maid, police and anime-inspired costumes.

The junior idol industry is a highly contentious one in Japan. Many Japanese criticise such depictions of underaged girls, including some Japanese politicians.[8] Despite such disapproval, stores selling junior idol-related materials proliferate in prominent areas such as Oimoya, an area located in Japan's well-known Akihabara shopping district.[8]

Fairly certain they're talking about loli manga/anime porn and the like.

Not just that. There are still child idol DVDs for sale where children are wearing bathing suits, licking on icecream cones, getting dirty with the "white melted icecream".
You have JDramas, where the "Oh you are a lolicon" is played for laughs.
Then you have the real AV industry, which also has a particular "loli" niche.

It really is undoubtedly disgusting. It isn't just Oda either it's the entirety of Shueisha that's giving Watsuki a pass. This just happened last year in May:

All of these manga-ka were at a party together which I believe was hosted by the Dr. Stone manga-ka but I could be wrong on the later thing.

I Don't sure this can count.
But Sanji x Pudding on WCI Arcs can consider being child marriage since Pudding is 16.

Recently which Toei show like Hugtto Precure and Ryusoulger have something like that.

It's fucked up to see this. There have been no real consequences for the RK author at all. Just other industry people being accepting of him.
