On the cusp of Pokemon 8’s reveal, let’s take a look at the reveals for X/Y and Sun/Moon

Back then, this blew my mind. It was everything I wanted—a brand new 3D Pokemon game, and we got to see overworld footage, battle footage, new legendaries, new starters, got to hear the music, it was perfect in every way! Of course, it's aged a bit badly. The sheer novelty of Pokemon in 3D was hype as fuck, but it's worn off now, and this reveal feels a bit quaint. Nonetheless, it was a better reveal than...



So here's the thing, I actually like this video a lot. It's really nostalgic, and a wonderful celebration of the franchise. However, as a reveal, it sucks. We get the names, and some concept art, and... that's it? We don't see any footage whatsoever. Going back to it is better because of how nostalgic it all feels, but as a reveal at the time, this royally sucked.

BONUS:


The "Legendary" trailer for Pokemon Sun/Moon came just a few months ahead of its launch, and this was what finally sold me on the game. This was perfect—we got a look at gameplay, overworld, graphics, music, story, legendaries, starters, the new gimmick (Z-Moves), it worked very well. Unlike X/Y, this one holds up, because Sun/Moon actually looked really good, and have aged better visually than X/Y did.

So, that's where we are: what kind of reveal do we want Pokemon 8 to have, and why? I imagine (hope) it will be like the Gen 6 reveal (the Legendary trailer style look will probably come far later in the year); while I really like the SuMo video in hindsight, I just hope it's not the format for the reveal they follow with Poke8.

I remember it being funny that half of Sun Moon's announcement video was to talk about RBY coming to Virtual Console. That said, I wouldn't poo-poo some older Pokemon titles becoming available for Switch either...

Fingers heavily crossed for something more akin to X/Y's reveal tomorrow. If it's just some concept art and wireframes of Pokemon, well, that's a bummer. It's where my expectations are set just in case, though.

I hope it's like the Gen 6 reveal. There's a ton of details in that video that can spawn thousands of discussions, predictions, conversations until we get new info.

Man, X/Y is really ugly.
Wonder if Pokemon 2019 will have that first gen on console stank to it of if that was what Let's Go was.

The Sun and Moon reveal just being logos when the logos were leaked ahead of time was really rough too, lol

The other first reveals are pretty underwhelming so I should know not to get my hopes up.....BUT THE HYPE TRAIN HAS ALREADY LEFT GRAND CENTRAL STATION!!!

I hope it's not like the Gen 6 reveal in that it ends up being massively disappointing once the game actually comes out!

yikes X/Y is hideous... it aged to badly omg, and the game is really great, they should port it to Switch with an HD texture pack and some touch ups.

Really hoping for a Gen 6 style reveal. That trailer was fantastic; and set people into a frenzy of speculation!

What's the point of doing another Gen 7 style nothing reveal? They don't need to bother with nostalgia bait this time, they already have Let's Go for that!

Wow, that X/Y reveal trailer smacked me upside the head with nostalgia I forgot I even had. I'd skipped BW2 (like an idiot) but got roped right back in.

These trailers make me feel so warm and fuzzy inside I want to Pyukumuku all over the place. X/Y were pretty great, S/M were ok but yea obviously the lack of any content was a bummer and I'm pretty sure I've seen better nostalgia milking from them before.

Yah I was just watching these earlier. Despite X and Y's visuals aging poorly and the games not being very good in general, it shouldn't be understated how baller that reveal was at the time. Huge jump for the series from a technological standpoint, and seeing those 3D battle models, which still look great to this day, for the first time was crazy.

These reveals is why I was confused why people thought 7 minutes wasn't enough. I think most people in the Pokemon Direct thread completely forgot about these. I'm hoping/thinking Gen 8 will be more of an XY style reveal. It's the first real new Pokemon game on the Switch

I think the SuMo trailer is better but it lacks actually showing off anything (while also inadvertently also showing things that wouldn't make it into the final game), I'd prefer if the new trailer shows off at least the starters and base trainers. A quick look at the region (but not region map) would also be nice. I definitely don't want them to do what they've been doing and over showing their hand though. Save some surprises for the game itself, you know?

Also unrelated to the reveals themself, but the ad campaign for SuMo was also incredibly strong with its ongoing narrative of a new kid connecting with other kids his age through Pokemon. I hope we get something on that level for this Gen.

The XY reveal had so much hype behind it, and then we finally saw what would be the first 3D main series games. And then XY came out and never lived up to the hype (at least not to me).

Sun and Moon's reveal was flatout garbage in comparison. All that nostalgia hyping and you end up with just the logo? Yeah, no thanks.

Also, I hope they stop nostalgia-wanking tmr, like we get it, Pokemon has had a rich and storied history.

Because a trailer isn't just its contents? The retrospective drums up hype really well, way more that "I have something to share with the world". Watching it now, it still got me excited.

Actually, imagine that for real.

100 players drop on a map, usual business. Find Pokeballs containing certain Pokemon with different movesets and held items a la Battle Factory. Eliminate players with Pokemon battles.

Obviously some things would need to be tweaked (I don't know how the closing ring would work in that format) but it could be done!

Never mind a Pokemon MMO. This is the Pokemon game no one is asking for.

Urgh, seeing the X and Y reveals just annoys me as at the time I was so excited and hyped...then the game were released and while I did enjoy the early part of the game. I couldn't help shake off the feeling that something wasn't quite right. Then I got to the third gym and the game took a major nose dive in quality dragging down the rest of gen 6 and 7 with it.

HA! It will 6 minutes of fluff and only 1 minutes of actual footage...if we're lucky.

Idk that X/Y reveal actually seems pretty rock solid to me. It covers everything. If we got that for Gen8 tomorrow I'd be thrilled.

Yeah, it's a good reveal, it's more that X/Y themselves actually aged poorly, so it looks quaint in hindsight, since so much of it was banking on "Pokemon, in 3D" to leave an impression.

Gen 8 is just likely with how long it's been since Gen 7 released, and with the way they do their marketing the next titles they're releasing are definitely "core" entries and we're about to enter a media blitz for something big. There's technically a chance it's still Gen 7 entries, but that seems super unlikely.
