If Insomniac was say Ubisoft, this comparison wouldn't be ridiculous. But it's not.

And if it was Ubisoft, that shit'd suck ass as well.
That's a false equivalency if there ever was one, heh.

Sony and Insomniac were publishing partners for decades... Ratchet, Spider-Man, Resistance... Sony owned a bunch of the IP Insomniac developed. Microsoft didn't own Fallout or Doom.

Sony/Insomniac acquisition was only $229 million... 1/32 the size of the Bethesda purchase.

There's a bit of a difference there.
I think the point being conveyed here is, it's a questionable thing to cheer for. Big or small.

In the immortal words from that one dude working for Blizzard, "Don't you guys have phones?" Xcloud ensures these games will remain broadly available for at least, everyone with good internet.

If I wasn't getting Xbox, there would be few things more unappealing than the idea of playing ultra immersive, sprawling open world RPGs like ESVI & Starfield on a phone. I'd literally rather not play them at all.

Ive never used gamepass nor do I even use Xbox/Windows so I have no dog in this fight.

I do not think a 7 billion dollar acquisition in ~$150 billion+ industry with dozens of competitors is even close to a monopoly position. It's prima facie absurd imo. Bethesda owns some great and very iconic IPs with a lot of output, but it's a drop in the bucket of the broader industry

To clarify: I do not think Microsoft just bought the entire video game industry by any stretch, but it's, yes, concerning. LOL all we want, heh.

We are seeing the escalation of IP/brand purchasing reaching crazy new heights today, though. Can you even imagine something happening at a grander scale?

Buying big and successful multiplatform games makers is just bad. I don't think MS will be satisfied until they buy Rockstar at this point.

People used to joke about Sony buying Capcom and Square, but at this rate it just makes sense if MS will continue to buy massive AAA studios.

Future Grandma meme " there used to be some multiplatform games*

Would you prefer I wrote it as "buy another overpriced console or build a PC to get the next game in a series you played on your console of choice"? The point is that locking down an entire publisher's catalog of multiplatform games as exclusives is bad for the industry and only good for Microsoft's shareholders.

People would be FURIOUS if Sony bought a publisher this big. "But it's also on PC, you should be happy!" is not a valid excuse for taking access away from millions of customers.
You have the right to be outraged for sure. But to be fair, the Series S exists, as well as Gamepass, which is probably cheaper than buying another branded console and paying for these games separately. The deal is anti consumer from a monopolies are bad perspective, but there are some wins here for the consumer.

This was something I was thinking about... any potential Outer Worlds 2 is probably going to have to differentiate itself further from Fallout (and maybe try to avoid stepping on Starfield's toes too).

I wonder about all of those TES comparisons with Avowed, too.
I don't think that will be a big issue. It's not like there is a new Fallout or TES every year. These games take so many years to make if there are other similar games in-between it should not be problematic.

Could have said the same about Minecraft.
Yup. I think they allow a couple of the games onto PS5 and Switch. They don't want to give up the sales and the mass appeal of some of these games, just like they did with Minecraft. I'd guess the next Fallout is still multiplat, but I do think they will keep a couple big guns just to themselves to further add value to Xbox and Game Pass.

Is this purchase bigger than the combined acquisitions of the last 5 years? (Not including Mojang)

Wow, this is probably the most brilliant play by Microsoft. Taking the one advantage Sony had over them which was the big budget single player narrative epics.

Xbox's first party reportoire is now unrivaled.

Being forced to invest in digital-only services in a world of asshole ISP monopolies and punishing data caps is not a win.

I don't have feelings on this yet but from a platform war perspective Microsoft has a sick first party now.

On PC Microsoft has very much embraced Steam as a viable platform and now that gamepass allows mods I really don't see the situation changing with EO/Fallout in regards to that.

Heck just look at Flight Sim to see their approach to modding on first party games.
They added mod support to the Xbox app. It moves the game files to an editable folder if you click enable mods. I'm guessing more and more games will support this feature.
I hope so, I think games being able to be modded was around when The Outer Worlds was out, but to do any modding in that game I had to get the EGS version after I had already played through the GamePass version. Obsidian was even open to modding The Outer Worlds but it was not possible to even touch the files unless it was the EGS version. I couldn't even add a ini file to make Supernova harder in the GamePass version.

For sure; philosophically, consolidation like this isn't a feel-good thing, usually. The Insomniac/Sony relationship is sort of a rare scenario, though, where people like Ted Price were working with Cerny/Sony since, what, 1994, on so many games that it just "felt right" for a lot of people.

Insomniac didn't bring IP to Sony with that deal, last I checked. It was the other way around.

Game Pass has 15 million subscribers.
I didn't mean necessarily the people who already have GP, I should've been more clear. I'm talking lost Playstation consumers who don't have means to get or want an Xbox or gaming pc: that's not a small market by any means. So my scenario is based off the idea that even if a staggering amount of these PS only gamers sub for game pass on their phone, tablet, etc, a non Xbox or PC (or at least gaming PC) then they'd definitely make Xbox some money, but selling it day 1 for $70 on PS5 would make a ton of money too.

basically why not have it on everything?

if next gen is another 100M PS5 to 50M Xbox situation (maybe it's won't be idk) then it would be strange to walk away from that money. It's all good to get people to sub to your services but if people are willing to pay $70 outright why not take advantage of that?

Because their team scored...Or something.

What a win for this team.

I THINK the big difference is PC.

When sony moneyhats something or buys a studio, you have to buy a PS console to play it or in some cases, wait for a exclusivity deal to end, with MS now you can buy an Xbox console or a PC, an "open" platform, and you will probably have the option to get it on gamepass or buy it on steam day one.

It really makes no sense they was getting all of these games anyway.

Your move Sony. Even if I don't think they technically need to, I still wouldn't be surprised if Sony picks up a dev or two just to lock in a few more exclusives.

Oh well, at least I'll be able to Game Pass PC Starfield on day one then. Never been a fan of their other IPs.
Still crazy to think that even though everyone keeps saying that the traditional console wars are over, both Sony and MS are entrenched deeper than they've ever been.

No, not in years. As easy as it has become, it's still more complicated and requires more work than I want to put in. I prefer the simplicity of consoles.
I can appreciate that. If ES 6 and Starfield are exclusive, I guess an X way down the line is in order for you. It's how I treat PlayStation. I only get them for exclusives, really.

Great for GamePass and Microsoft's AAA output which was shite to say the least, but really bad long term for the industry. Will just make Sony reply in kind and giant publishers just consolidating every developer is never going to end well for the consumer.

Personally other than the price MS paid I don't see what's the fuss all about. TES has become a running joke, Fallout is all but dead, the rest of the studios have games that people didn't buy, only Doom is great. Even if they decide that all of them will become exclusives to PC/Xbox I don't care. I don't think that anyone bought a console this generation to play Skyrim, or Fallout, or Doom, these games are not system sellers anymore, and I don't consider them as a great incentive to have a continuous game pass subscription.

How, in any possible timeline, these situations are close to be similar.
People were OK (just last night) with an hypothetical Bluepoint Games acquisition by Sony. But not OK with an acquisition by Microsoft. It's that simple. See the irony?

www.resetera.com

Should Sony put a ring on Bluepoint Games?

Even if they just focused on making remasters, it would be a great get, these guys are extremely talented. I would love to see what they could do with a totally original IP too. I imagine it wouldn't be very expensive to buy them, wonder if Sony is thinking about buying them. Bluepoint would...

Two things:

  1. ES6 is just one game on Game Pass. It is unlikely that a majority of people will sub for one month to play it and then un-sub immediately, especially if Starfield releases a few months later, and there's other games they want to play. This is what it's really all about - getting enough content that interests the widest range of gamers to keep them subbed long-term.
  2. How much will ES6 be sold for, new, a year after release? How about three years? It will probably approach the equivalent of a one month Game Pass Ultimate sub at some point. With Game Pass, it just becomes another game in the stable perpetually for new XBox gamers to experience when they get signed on. This is as much about the next generation of gamers as it is you or I.
Just pointing out that you have this backwards. Bethesda has said for ages that Starfield will be out before ES6.
