The convenience factor is a bigger hurdle to VR gaming than I anticipated so I think the standalone units like the Quest have the best chance at mass market penetration.

Lenses look to be much larger than the original. I'm right there with you & will need new lens inserts.

This is such a mystery. People on Reddit are mocking up sizes based on the known size of the USB-C port. If they're right, this thing is way smaller than Quest 1. Maybe it's just an illusion because the rest is so small. Still, they were redesigned for some reason. So fingers crossed.

do we know if this headset will be 90hz or not? Love my quest but 72hz aint it.

Tomorrow. All we know is Bloomberg was right about everything so far. Only thing remaining is the refresh rate. They claimed 90hz was the minimum and 120hz was being explored with certain prototypes (battery being the biggest issue).

We also have the promo video where they said the XR2 enables the fastest and smoothest games ever (while specifically showing Beat Saber and Eleven Tennis footage during this remark).

They can always disappoint, but there's no reason not to be optimistic about tomorrow.

This is exciting especially if it gets a launch within a week from announcement. I really wish Amazon was more reliable with product launches cause I can't stand dealing with Best Buy's authorization holds, may have to go to a brick and mortar location to pre-order tomorrow like I did with the first Quest to just pay it off in full.

True.

Hoping for an FOV increase. Would essentially be the only thing I have to complain about. I use a burner FB account with my current Quest & have had no issues so not too concerned about that being mandatory. Although I disagree with it.

I think I got my OG Quest on launch day from Amazon. Either that, or it was the next day. If the refresh rate is there, I'm prioritizing Amazon as my pre-order of choice.

I got mine from best buy because of a father's day discount :P

my first choice would likely be target for the red card discount, and then likely amazon or walmart if the preorder will take until oct to ship as my discover card category switchs over to those two next month.

I haven't been that interested in the standalone aspect but the fact that they're using a cutting edge soc suddenly makes the idea more palatable. I just love seeing the cutting edge of tech

Oho but I'm never using Facebook! I'm such a sensible consumer

I'm also never using amazon or google cos I'm such a galaxy brain I realise that all these companies monetise my data!

I also haven't figured out how to create fake accounts because I'm too busy being smart and ethical

gosh how do I have time to do anything being so correct?

people posting that they're opting to not buy a $300 device shouldn't bother you, even if you see it as being hypocritical

Keep in mind that the device in general is smaller and lighter than the original, according to the leaked videos, so the lenses will look larger compared to the rest.

"It's been streamlined and it looks great. But most importantly, it's smaller and lighter for increased comfort."

Has anyone pre-ordered from Oculus directly for prior launches (cv1, quest, rift s)? If so curious how quick you received it after launch day.

Haven't had a chance to sell my quest yet, so I think I'm just gonna hold onto it as a "backup" and get the Quest 2 at some point down the line. I need a GPU update anyway since this would primarily be a PCVR headset for me

For anyone wondering about where to order: a year ago, I ordered the Oculus Quest from Amazon.com for launch-day shipping within minutes of preorders going live. The night before it was due to arrive, it still hadn't shipped, and Amazon changed the delivery time to "by 11pm". So I canceled the Amazon order and ordered from BestBuy for pickup, got it during lunch at work on launch day. This year...who knows?

Also, for fun, here's my initial Oculus Quest 1 "review" for my friends after my first real in-depth gaming session of a few hours:

  • Thoughts: the Quest rests a bit heavy on your cheeks, not great for long sessions. Built-in audio sucks for music-based games (especially Dance Central, sheesh, the game takes place in a club, without headphones you can barely hear the music).
  • I really like being able to just pick it up, put it on, and use it (and take it off when done). It's weird how much better that feels, especially compared to the Pimax, which has a number of steps to get it going (including running the Pimax software, customizing settings for the game you want to play, then opening SteamVR). I figured the articles were exaggerating about the convenience, since that's the main selling point of the device, but it does make a real difference.
  • I need to maximize the space in my room, even after rearranging there wasn't enough room to make the Quest happy for what it considers the optimal size
  • Tracking is great, the only time I ever ran into tracking issues was a controller issue in Dance Central, where the interface is a cell phone. I held the phone up to my face, and tracking crapped out - right in front of the headset is a tracking dead zone
  • Loading times are horrible, the built-in flash RAM is dog slow, and there is no support for external storage
  • The displays are very sharp and detailed, great black levels and contrast (I played the Apollo 11 experience, so got out in space to test that). When games take full advantage of them they look amazing. God rays are present but far better than basic Oculus Rift, only shows up with very bright colors on pure black. Pixels (and the space between them) are present, but high enough resolution you generally don't notice them unless you are looking for them
  • Holy cow, Vader Immortal is sweet. Not the most interactive adventure, but just enough, and very immersive, seeing everything in scale is great, Vader is tall! Best graphics on the Quest (though with a cost, you can't physically move very far without it darkening everything and telling you to move back). The beginning reminded me of the old Disneyland Star Tours ride, or the Mass Effect ride at California's Great America

Thank you for your breakdown! I'm very into getting a Quest 2 all of a sudden.

Don't know if I should sell my Quest 1 on eBay. I could probably easily make the $300 for the upgrade cost but if I can't snag a pre-order before they sell out, I'm up shit creek without a paddle for a while.

I absolutely love my Quest, and if the Quest 2 was simply lighter and more comfortable I'd probably purchase it.

But hearing it's probalby multiple times faster, it's a no-brainer.

Not sure what the big deal is about a higher-resolution screen though. The Quest already renders games at resolutions much lower than native, and I assume the Quest 2 would too - not really a big deal either way IMO.

are you sure that's true?

even if that's the case, the upscaled stuff would still look much better. additionally pcvr would take full advantage of an increased resolution

From what I can tell after playing a lot of Quest games over the last year, yeah. Stuff like Beat Saber might render natively (except for peripheral vision which is always lower resolution), and other games like Pistol Whip and Sairento VR definitely render at a lower resolution.

But anyway yeah, I know upscaled stuff will look better, I just mean IMO the Quest's resolution is already high enough, doesn't seem like it needs to be higher for what it's trying to do. But I won't turn it down.

As a Rift CV1 owner, this might be a tempting upgrade. I already have a room scale setup, but the added flexibility and being able to take down my sensors would be nice.

To those with a critical eye it could have less screendoor from increased pixel density (this is not impacted at all from rendering resolution) and still be a notable downgrade in black level and constrast versus Quest 1.

I will not be at all surprised if high panel quality ends up exclusive to high end headsets.

And I don't think many reviewers will even give a shit and be useful to buyers looking for fidelity beyond resolution.

This could be the time to jump in honestly. The machine looks better in nearly every way. More powerful, better resolution and crucially much smaller and lighter. Now we need to get to a point where the software ecosystem matures. Devs need to be able to make better games and to charge more for them on the Oculus store.

Is Quest 1 supported by the PC Oculus store or do you need Revive to get it to access those games?

I already have a Rift S but it would be nice to have something with a higher resolution that would take advantage of the power of a 3080. Being half the price of the G2 makes this tempting although I'm really only interested in using it for PCVR. I'm going to need reviews for the ergonomics and screen/lens quality.

it's supported by the oculus store when you use the oculus link stuff (which doesn't require the actual oculus link cord but any usb 3.0 (maybe only 2.0 i haven't paid attention if they got that out) to work.

Steam also detects it as an oculus headset like that or even if you use virtual desktop.

Good to know, thanks. Seems fairly hassle free.

Virtual Desktop also sounds intriguing. For the most part I don't mind a tether but it would be nice to go wireless for daily Beat Saber and VR Box sessions.

I might make the jump to this, at some point. All I've ever owned is the Samsung Gear, which was neat.

How close is VR tech when it comes to crazy shit like eye tracking?

I never got beat saber to work over VD to a level that felt okay. (though it's natively on the quest as well and the dlc is cross buy on the oculus store)
that being said I haven't managed to get beat saber to feel decent over the link since an update like 6 months ago so results might vary, but VD adds just a tiny bit of lag, which for beat saber on anything above hard wasn't really any good. But pretty much any other game worked fine for me.

That being said all signs point towards the new chip in the quest 2 allowing a much improved wireless experience in general.

Hopefully there will be some improvements there but honestly I don't go near any difficulty beyond hard. I suppose there's really no benefit using a PC for BS anyways. What I'm looking forward to is super crisp high res for stuff like Lone Echo, Alyx, Squadrons, and Medal of Honor. Please review well!

Two reviewers to watch: MRTV and Tested.com. Tested.com goes into a lot of technical detail about everything, and MRTV is constantly comparing all the VR headsets and is brutally honest, once he gets a Quest 2 he'll go down into the tiny details regarding SDE, black levels/contrast, tracking, etc. (BTW, his pick for best visual fidelity among consumer vr: HP Reverb G2, though he has a prototype and they told him they would lower the brightness in the final unit).

Of course. And you'll get the Quest's full resolution with videos. So it'll actually be just slightly behind the Reverb G2 in video quality.

I believe any HMD capable of PCVR would work.

This is why I shall forever avoid the second hand VR market.

You don't even need that. You can either load the videos directly onto the headset, or just stream them from any PC (via Skybox for example).

I think I'm more excited for the new games they're working on rather than the hardware I want to see what those Star Wars, Jurassic World, Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed games are. Hopefully they still work with the original Quest and also come to the Rift as well.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere amidst the thread but is there any leaked info about diminished screen door effect? I love my Quest but it's something I'd definitely be happy to see improved with a Q2.

If they can make Quest 2 lighter, this could be a home run. As of right now, Quest headset is just too heavy and the head strap can be very uncomfortable.
