I don't really think this will backfire on him the way something like the deplorables comment did, he didn't seem to even get into specifics about who those 10-15% of people are.
And he also didn't name any specific base. I think everyone in America thinks at least 10-15% of the population are "bad people". Who those "bad people" are changes depending on your politics.Biden will be fine with this because A) it's a lower percentage and not as catchy as "deplorables" and B) the country is in a bad state rather than the public being on a high after 8 years of Obama.
That and he is a white man.Biden will be fine with this because A) it's a lower percentage and not as catchy as "deplorables" and B) the country is in a bad state rather than the public being on a high after 8 years of Obama.
"Do we really think this is as good as we can be as a nation? I don't think the vast majority of people think that," the former vice president said. "There are probably anywhere from 10 to 15 percent of the people out there that are just not very good people, but that's not who we are. The vast majority of the people are decent, and we have to appeal to that and we have to unite people — bring them together. Bring them together."
Mr. Biden's comments harked back to controversial statements by past presidential nominees who generalized in negative terms about portions of the population. In 2012, Mitt Romney, whose taped comments at a private fund-raising event were later leaked, said "47 percent" of voters would never support him because they were "dependent on the government." And in 2016, Hillary Clinton said half of Mr. Trump's supporters belonged in a "basket of deplorables."
He's not wrong, but he shouldn't fall in the same trap that Hilary did.
Good shit.
You obviously haven't read this thread. In this group 35% is the average.Everyone believes at least 50% of people are terrible, regardless of their background or beliefs
15% is unbelievably low
Yes he is, it's closer to 30%!
Their strategy is to twist the said and unsaid, so it doesn't really matter if he says it or not. They'll even make up shit to push their base, stop worrying about how they will take it.
I like Soledad O'Brien's take on the NYT headline. Twitter thread:
Yeah they loved it when Hillary did the same.
It's actually higher than 15%. But he still shouldn't say it.
