Is the 3090 the equivalent of an 2080Ti or a Titan in people's minds?

That is the question I ask myself.

Why did nVidia name it 3090 and not Titan, if it's really a Titan?

If it's not a titan, then why not name it 3080Ti?

Man, I wish I could read nVidia's internal marketing and see how they came to their decisions :)

My understanding is MS Flight Sim is very CPU-bound.
It depends on what you do in game. Digital Foundry did a really informative performance analysis. I'd be highly disappointed if LTT didn't account for that in their benchmarking. You can easily create GPU limited scenarios by picking the right location, time of day, and weather.

Flight Sim starts to hit the CPU hard if you're flying near cities and when it's streaming in stuff

But it's also a very GPU heavy game. It's super punishing in all areas

They explained it like this: The Titan wasn't meant for gamers, but gamers bought it anyway, so the 3090 is a card with Titan-esque specs designed for gamers.

Whether that makes sense or not, I can't help you with.

Reading through TechPowerUp's review, they say that overclocking is pretty limited on the 3080. Compared to their 2080 Ti FE review where they stated they got about 11% real world performance improvement from overclocking the 2080 Ti, by comparison for 3080 that was only 4%.

So it seems like a lot of the performance increase comes from increased power usage. Have any of you seen a review that compares 2080 Ti overclocked to the 3080?
3080 FE sucks for overclockers it seems (I kinda suspected this). It's power limited all the time. Hopefully 3x8pin AIB cards will be better. Also, seems like card runs into big diminishing returns at 1440p and especially 1080p, so it's basically a 4K card, over wise you are just wasting money.

Doesn't hit 4K60 on Control with RTX and DLSS on

Shit like this is why I have trouble shelling out $1000 CAD on a single graphics card. If I'm paying out the ass and still can't enjoy the "never thinking about settings" lifestyle then I might as well get something cheaper and upgrade more often.

Who's buying a 3080 to play at a low resolution like 1440p.

Me, for one, because my 1080Ti can't do Ray Tracing. But also at 1440p I'm even more future proofed than anyone at 4K, since I'll get all the features, Ultra presets, and frame rates (and more of them) for a lot longer. I'm also not a fan of 4K for desktop application/use, I still feel like 1440p is the PC sweetspot.

It does right now, but we're going to start seeing a generation change in games which is going to be great with the new horsepower. Especially with more games using RTX.

25% faster than the TI unless you're using ray tracing then it's more like 40-50%. Slightly deflating but still great.

Do note that Hardware Unboxed/Tech Power-Up is using a Ryzen CPU, while most of the rest are using Intels. That might explain some of the discrepancies.

The low 1% fps drops Steve is experiencing in his review with a small overclock are a little bit worrying. I wonder if that is due to power limitations

According to Computerbase dropping the power target by 50 Watts (320 W ->270 W) leads to a performance loss of only 4%.
Seems like Nvidia brute forced the last bit of performance. Not sure why they did that, given that AMD probably won't be able to catch up this generation.

Same, I have my current 1080 hooked up to my 1440p gsync and my lg C9. I just prefer the 120+ fps 1440p to the 4k. I can't really tell a difference visually so I just stick with 1440p.

So real world reviews are not showing the purported 50% leap over the RTX 2080 Ti, at least without RTX.
