GRRM is a fan. His review below:

Based on Bernard Cornwell novels of the same name, it follows the birth of England through the eyes of a half Dane half Saxon warrior Uhtred Ragnarsson.

I watched season 1 and part of season 2 a long time ago. All I really remember is the main character being insufferably annoying and stupid, and that the show was pretty corny too.

It's one of the shows on Netflix I've been meaning to watch.

This too. After watching it's now one of my favorite pieces of zombie media ever and I can't wait for season 2.

Tell me about it

My brother rarely watches subtitled shows but he is insanely hyped for season 2

It's my favorite zombie tv series atm

Without spoiling too much is there magical elements in this? Looking for something to scratch this itch
There is some viking witchcraft and skullduggery. But no wizards or dragons.

It's a really well made show. The battle scenes are really, really good. There's blood, gore, limbs cut off, heads smashed, etc.

Thanks for making this thread. I really hope more people find The Last Kingdom as it is such a good, underrated show and I want Netflix to keep going with it. Each season has been better than the last.

I've heard they're good. In fact I heard he's just a great writer. Tell me where to start with Cornwell's work
I'd start with the first book in the Saxon series and then tackle his Sharpe series if you get a feel for Bernard's writing.

Saxon series:

The Last Kingdom
The Pale Horseman
The Lords of the North
Sword Song
The Burning Land
Death of Kings
The Pagan Lord
The Empty Throne
Warriors of the Storm
The Flame Bearer
War of the Wolf

Sharpe series:

Sharpe's Tiger
Sharpe's Triumph
Sharpe's Fortress
Sharpe's Trafalgar
Sharpe's Prey
Sharpe's Rifles
Sharpe's Havoc
Sharpe's Eagle
Sharpe's Gold
Sharpe's Escape
Sharpe's Fury
Sharpe's Battle
Sharpe's Comny
Sharpe's Sword
Sharpe's Enemy
Sharpe's Honour
Sharpe's Regiment
Sharpe's Siege
Sharpe's Revenge
Sharpe's Waterloo
Sharpe's Devil

Or just watch Sharpe.

(everybody should watch Sharpe)

It even has Sean Bean in it! And he doesn't die!

More people should get into Last Kingdom. It's so incredibly overlooked.

I'd also recommend the Warlord Chronicles which as it's only 3 books long is very easy to get into.

I read the first five or so books of this series like a decade ago, I never got into the show because one day I was planning on getting around to rereading them and then the rest of the series. It feels weird there's a show now, like it grew up without you. I love Bernard Cornwall though, read his King Arthur series, a lot of the Sharpe novels, and some others.

So I'm kind of conflicted because reading the books will be a big commitment, and it'd be easier to just watch the show, but I kind of want to reread the books first. Or maybe I should just watch the series and be surprised again.

I loved the books though

Yeah, The Last Kingdom has been great. Season 3 was absolutely on point and I can't wait for Season 4.

100%.

The Last Kingdom is actually an extremely well-written and tightly-paced show, and only gets better as it goes on — basically the opposite of Game of Thrones qualitatively.

Anyone who digs Game of Thrones because of the earlier seasons' political maneuvering, character drama, an earned plotting absolutely owes it to themselves to watch The Last Kingdom.

Is it a star trek type show?

Not really. Star Trek's great and all but this is a more grounded look at space, if you'll pardon the pun. It feels visceral in ways that Trek/Wars tech doesn't allow. It feels like a genuinely possible solar future, complete with powerhouse companies, dissident human factions, and... well, a potentially supernatural subplot that gradually becomes heavier, a la ASOIAF. (It's written by George's assistants from back in the day!)

I can agree with that. Great show, The relationship between Alfred and Uhtred is incredible. Some fairly interesting battles which actually have more thought put into it.

Cool, I'll check it out. I've had it on my watchlist on prime for like a year but keep forgetting because I don't use it much. Ha

Yay! I hope you like it! Amazon saved it from Syfy's cancellation last year and they're already starting to promote it more than Skiffy ever did so expect to hear more and more as we gear up toward season 4.

Only watched Season 1 and didn't care for it. Was I supposed to hate almost every character?

It's an amazing show, but I feel like the show has already reached its peak. I haven't read the books, though.

For those who have read the books: Is the best still to come?

Season 2 and 3 were amazing, but I feel like after the events of Season 3 there isn't much left for Uhtred to do other than take Bebbanburg back from his uncle.

I'm done with serialized drama for a long time after how awfully GoT ended. The well is poisoned.

This will renew your faith. If it helps, there is no plot armor in this show for anyone other than Uhtred. Also, the characters do not make ridiculous or dumb moves where you scream WTF.

I'm kind of glad season four won't be out for a while. Entertaining and well made but after going through all of GoT's over the last month, I need a break from serialized drama too.

Also, GoT at it's best was considerably better than The Last Kingdom. But GoT hasn't been at it's best for some time now so, yeah.

i'd recommend the expanse over last kingdom
there's not much political intrigue stuff in last kingdom imo
