Chile Update June 22nd

+ 4.608 new positives, 246.963 total, 269.270 counting suspected cases
+ 23 new deaths (weekend lag), 4.502 confirmed, 7.571 total counting death with no PCR test
+ 1.726 ventilated, 403 critical
+ 18.645 reported tests, 982.353 total

24,7% positive rate daily
25.1% positive rate total

On Sunday, dear President Piñera attended the funeral of his uncle, a priest accused of child abuse, who is pretty much confirmed to have died of Covid19. Supposedly, Covid related funerals can't have more than 20 attendants, coffin can't be opened and the deceased can't be dressed and has to be in a bag.

None of this were fulfilled. Piñera demanded that the coffin was opened to be seen. To the funeral attended 20 relatives, plus 6 musicias plus 3 priests, plus several photografers.

Despite the video evidence, government just claims everything was fine. Said he didn't died of covid (yet in the video the President says it, and then the President's cousin in an interview confirmed it).

Health Minister said in TV that "since the coffin is sealed, the protocol was accomplished too", and after being questioned that "every coffin is sealed by demand of law" he just said, "I don't know". Health Minister doesn't know the normal health procedures for the deceased, and yet he claims that "everything is fine!"

A total Fuck You from the very president to the 7000+ people that has had to bury their loved ones vía zoom.

had a headache since Friday, started showing a few more symptoms this morning. no cough yet though, hopefully that doesn't manifest
been a good boy since March, even had my nose swabbed 2 weeks ago and tested negative
roommate still feels fine, so i'm gonna barricade myself in my room for now i guess

the worst thing so far actually is i'm having trouble sleeping. has insomnia been a symptom? i'm not super stressed or anxious about it, since my symptoms seem mild, but the ever-present headache isn't helping and i'm having crazy TLOU2 dreams when i do drift off, need to check for a fever as well i suppose

at least i can still taste
gonna order some grub and start rewatching hannibal
I've been having insomnia too lately. Two nights ago my wife and I were up till 2. I kept thinking I should just stay awake and play more tlou2. I finished it at 3:35 am and then woke up at 8:30 this morning.

I don't think insomnia is a symptom; it's maybe coming from stress?

I got a covid test and antibody test yesterday just out of curiosity. The infamous nasal swab was really blown out of proportion. It took maybe 6 entire seconds for both nostrils. To me, it didn't feel like my brain way being poked. It reminded me of that discomfort of when you inhale pool water through your nose on accident. I was surprised by how fast it was lol.

13 new cases in Slovenia, this is the biggest jump since the end of April. Seven of those were imported from Balkan countries.

Their R0 must be very high, at some point they'll have to impose a lockdown because the hospitals will be overwhelmed. It's not a matter of "if" but "when", it looks inevitable.
I imagine for these red states that are refusing to sacrifice their "freedom" that the only breaking point would be people literally dying in the street because every ICU bed is filled.

It's also a symptom of stress, anxiety, and depression. Look at the state the world is in, and specifically the state that the US is in. I've been going to bed later than usual for several months because it's difficult to reconcile with everything going on and lie down for a normal slumber.

As an European: good.
As an American: good.

In PA and numbers are still falling per capita, but while the number of cases in the Philadephia Area (Philly and Suburbs) continues to fall pretty rapidly over the last 2-4 weeks, other areas that deemed themselves a little more important then everyone else and ignored things have started to pick back up. Luckily for a lot of places, they are sparsely populated (but that also means lack of hospital care in some) so the numbers aren't huge... but that also neatly lines up with shitheel "muh freedom" Trump supporters.

I did travel to central PA last weekend and had to stop in a gas station in prime territory and was impressed by the fact that everyone in there was wearing a mask. Pleasantly surprised

Anyone intimately familiar with the Florida numbers? Seems like a huge drop from the peak a couple days ago. Was there a big backlog of tests that got completed to hit that 4k number?

This is pretty cool. Here are the numbers from the Mass. popup testing locations for those who participated in the BLM protests

Wear masks.

So I'm in a small town in Illinois with 1 small local grocery. The grocery store just announced one of their workers tested positive for Covid19. They sent this person home, and expressed how they were sanitizing everything and that they use plexiglass screens and everyone is masked, etc. But are we not supposed to be contact tracing right now? My wife was a customer there on Saturday and for sure she was in a short distance of this person. Shouldn't they be sending every employee that was in reasonable distance of the infected person home and quarantining them until they test negative? I thought that was the whole point of this phase.

So 425 people tested positive. Of course we don't know how much of that was from spread vs already having it. Currently Massachusetts has 217 new cases per day.
Not sure I would define that as "pretty cool".

It's inline with the current 2% positive rate in MA. And while 425 is a large number, they tested 17k over the course of a few days. I was worried it would be far worse. I'm just happy it wasn't, and that MA got out in front of it with free testing for everyone who participated in protesting.

Agreed very encouraging. Keep gatherings outdoors, wear masks, wash hands.

Opening up bars, clubs, and gyms almost immediately was such a stupid mistake for southern states. I'm still kind of perplexed at how bad the California numbers are considering they were one of the first states to shut everything down? Did they just re-open everything too quickly as well? Looking at the numbers it seems like they never really started trending down so guessing Newsom said screw it at some point which is baffling he's one of the most liberal governors in the US I mean the guy was mayor of SF. Also wondering if people are just not wearing masks because this seems to be a trend in states with hotter / nicer weather.

I think in New England everyone will be wearing masks this summer regardless because of how traumatized we all are from our collective loss. Sad to think that other states will have to go through (or more accurately are going through currently) the same exact thing before they finally take it seriously.

By my own unofficial recordkeeping, US deaths this Tuesday are up over last Tuesday for the first time in a long time. We'll see if its just a blip.

412 new coronavirus cases in Southern Nevada | Clark County | News | Politics and Government

The figures may be somewhat inflated due to a reporting backlog that typically occurs over weekends.

Nevada (Vegas) is going to enter the chat reeeeaaalll soon
It's very upsetting because we were at a 50 person case moving average at the end of May, but we opened up Casinos June 4 with only like a week notice. The Gov originally said Casinos would be the last thing open and it would be WEEKS if not MONTHS for them to open in early May, but I think CA opening up forced our hand as well. From my understanding people from CA and AZ are visiting and we know how those states are doing...

Had the covid test today, someone in our office last week had it so work made us. I don't have any symptoms and didnt have direct contact with this person. So the nose swab isn't as bad as I thought but it still fucking sucks.

Taiwan marks 73 days without new local coronavirus case
Taiwan only has 4 patients still being treated for coronavirus, 435 released from quarantine

During his weekly press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Minister of Health and Welfare and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) announced there were no new cases of coronavirus. Taiwan's total number of cases still stands at 446.

Slovenia
Looks like mandatory mask usage will be once again applied in Slovenia, at least indoors

Two quarantine centers will be established for all passengers coming from countries that are on the 'red list' (newest additions will be Albania and Portugal)

If I'm reading Worldometers correctly, then yesterday was the third highest daily total of new cases in the US...

Trump's comments aside, how much of this rise could be mitigated by an increase in testing over the last few months?

Limited. The positivity rate of tests has remained stable/risen in a lot of states meaning that still a lot of more cases aren't being found. It is more likely the US previously simply had some bad epicenters, and that it now has spread widely through all the states except those previous epicenters.

It's hard to know what to make of the official death figures anymore. A lot of the worst affected states seem to be reporting a lot of their covid related deaths as pneumonia/flu which makes it hard to tell what the true figure is.

I still think we'll see a rise in deaths. The cases on the US are heading back to where they were at the peak.

Oops Belgium, one of the ministers scolded and one of the experts because the expert was tweeting his opinion on the discussion instead of discussing.
