That's the whole thing, it's not very responsible to do right now.

Plus, people wouldn't do it. Was out at the post office before, the postal clerk this morning said: "Trump says it will be over by Easter, so it won't be long." Ugh.

I didnt wear a mask but last weekend me and my wife had gloves when we went to our local CVS and a local indian store to shop....the glares we got...

There was a lady who was wearing a mask but she was glared at too by the other people...

Apparently its normal/ok for a medical professional (pharmacist) but not normal populace to wear it in public....

I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but do we have some peak date estimations? I feel I'm starting to lose my mind locked in my house with my Christian mom lol

Why do I get the vibe companies like 3M are sitting on warehouses full of masks and they will conveniently hit the market in 10 days at a higher than usual mark up?
They're not. I work for that company. We are producing as fast as we can at every site we can, running mask production lines 24/7 and staggering breaks to keep the lines running through typical break periods. We're expediting the creation of as much additional manufacturing equipment as we can to ramp up our production as quick as we can.

How 3M Plans to Make More Than a Billion Masks By End of Year

The company is using “surge capacity” to increase the production of N95 masks to fight the pandemic. Localized supply chains are a secret weapon, too.

I thought after our city sent an emergency alert asking people to stay home my roommate would stop bringing his girlfriend over, but that is not the case

I get the impression it will be a rolling peak, moving from area to area as regional outbreaks happen. Other peaks around the country don't particularly interest me so much as the peak in my local area, which is probably still many weeks out.

I don't even know what people are talking about when they say the whole thing will peak in the next two or three weeks. Most of the country has barely scratched the surface of this thing. I can only guess they're trying to make everyone feel better by throwing a number out there. My worry is that people will view "it's peaked" as "it's on the downturn" which they'll interpret as "it's over". And then it all starts up again.

At least that answer the question how rich people keep getting tested.

www.nytimes.com

‘White-Collar Quarantine’ Over Virus Spotlights Class Divide (Published 2020)

Child care options, internet access and extra living space leave a gulf between rich and poor in coping with disruptions to school and work.

For about $80,000, an individual can purchase a six-month plan with Private Health Management, which helps people with serious medical issues navigate the health care system.

Such a plan proved to be a literal lifesaver as the coronavirus pandemic descended. The firm has helped clients arrange tests in Los Angeles for the coronavirus and obtained oxygen concentrators for high-risk patients.

"We know the top lab people and the doctors and nurses and can make the process efficient," said Leslie Michelson, the firm's executive chairman.

p.s.
Kodus for the NYT for finding real working class people to voice their issues, like this guy -
"This is a white-collar quarantine," said Howard Barbanel, a Miami-based entrepreneur who owns a wine company. "Average working people are bagging and delivering goods, driving trucks, working for local government."

Where is this guy's source at or are we to believe him because of check mark?
Business Insider was reporting the same thing earlier.
www.businessinsider.com

Trump reportedly called former Yankees player Alex Rodriguez to ask for his thoughts on handling the coronavirus outbreak

The call with Alex Rodriguez was reportedly part of a number of calls Trump made this week regarding the coronavirus and its impact on the country.

And yes: sources are important but can i just ask if it's really THAT surprising from him? :(

so theyre getting rich idiots to pay them 160k a year for very little benefit until now. Its not even health insurance, youre basically paying them to schedule things at Mayo or John Hopkins

In the Netherlands almost 80% of IC patients are overweight, that seemed like a hug statistic. Not sure if posted already.
To clarify, this is probably related to diabetes, high blood pressure and more difficuly breathing due to a heavier chest which are more common complaints for those who are overweight. Causation has not been found yet either, but it's hard to imagine they're not correlated at least.

Services like this helped Steve Jobs get a liver super quickly, and I'm sure that's not the only case.
When people say the US has the greatest healthcare system in the world they're not fully lying, it's just that it's only true if you're really rich.
And I would bet you anything this how rich people will get access to ventilators while normal people get triaged to death.

What if you cant find masks....?

Well, what iv been doing the last week, because im working in mandatory services, and using the subway to get there. Have any old tshirt? The part of the sleeves where your arms fit, i cut some old tshirt and my head fit in the hole, take it down to cover your face and nose, and it doesnt move. Perhaps before cutting, try it before to see if the arms sleeve is too tight and if the fabric is good enough to make you breath. Iv cut a few cotton tshirt, making sure i wont miss any for the week. And dont forget to wash your hand BEFORE putting it ON and OFF. Make sure if you have to take it down for some reason, use your little fingers on both side of your ears, not getting close to your mouth and nose.
Does it work? Well, im not 100% sure, not as efective as mask, but im feeling more confident travelling that way and feel it give me a better protection, and im wearing my glasses as extra direct protection for my eyes.

Huh?

I'm not familiar with the exact income distributions across the country, but the United States only has about 130 million households. You're suggesting that nearly a quarter of US households are bringing in >=$1M each year. That's pretty obviously bullshit.

Yeah I thought it was odd as well, but Google that shit... the site I saw said 13.5, but there are lots of others (CNBC, CNN, NYT etc) that put it at around 11+ as of 2018. Still a shit ton. Wikipedia says just over 7 in 2017. No matter how you slice it it's a lot of money, Even if I used the lowest number for my "stupid math" as I called it, that would still be $35 billion they could donate ;P

This is why I laugh when people say $100k is wealthy in America. You may not be living paycheck to paycheck, but no one in that category is paying $80k for this kind of access.

Keep the lower tiers fighting each other while pulling this kinda shit at the top.

There simply won't be enough masks, even with ramped up production, to go around, for everyone to wear one.
And wear a new one daily.
For two or more months.

Yep.
That's always the trick, rich people stay in power because the rest of us blame other people.
I hope this shit wake people up, but I am not certain that it will.

Can someone explain me what the rationale is behind everyone wearing masks? It's such a complete overkill. An infectious disease specialist here in the Netherlands compared it to wearing condoms all day long to prevent an STD.

I have some dusk masks for woodworking which I guess is better than nothing. They probably don't block much except for droplets.

At some point we need to get to "surveillance testing."

I just wonder how many months that will take.

Basically there are a lot of asymptomatic people going out and about spreading it around. Beyond that even symptomatic people going out but they can't get tested because testing is so restricted and thus don't even know if they have it. No one can even get masks in the first place. So it's kind of a moot point. But yeah wearing even a bandana will reduce the spread of respiratory droplets and help you to not touch your face.

Look at it like this- if they even prevent one person from getting COVID19, they've done a hell of a job. The crisis we're in right now? It started with one person.

If you have the virus, you're less likely to spread it if you're wearing a mask. You can have the virus and be a-symptomatic, it can only help. This "debate" is so stupid

Northern eu countries really are showing the worst of themselves in this crisis. You were a mask cause in the chance that you were infected with no symptoms you won't spread it. His stupid analogy is also wrong, it is like wearing a condom when you have sex, which you should do!

Florida AM update adds 565 cases bringing the total to 3,763. PM update may bring it to 1,000+ on the day. 54 dead (+8).

I was curious after your post, and one of the first comments had a picture of a dead child in it. NSFL.

The horrible thing is, if I were brave enough to go back to Twitter and wanted to report that, Twitter wouldn't do shit and just suggest that I ignore that user.

No. Don't go on a nature trail. Remember the pictures of crowded trails. Also, if something were to happen to you and you need medical attention because of it - you'd take up the extremely limited time of exhausted caregivers.
They are open for a reason

Lol I was just going to put this out too. Like the condom analogy only makes sense if you're literally fucking 24/7. You have to breath, you know all day long.

It spreads through coughing or sneezing or through touch. Not through breathing. If you're symptomatic, stay inside. If you're not, and if maybe you're asymptomatic, limit going outside to the bare minimum, wash your hands and don't touch your face. I'm just glad us "northern EU countries" are basing our policies on evidence based medicine.
