Well, you shouldn't go outside too!
It's ok to go for a walk, even according to the Berliner Charité virologist who created the COVID-test. (from his last podcast)

What is bad is going outside and meeting other people, that was a problem here in my hometown in Germany, young people just feel like it's extended holiday, so let's go outside and drink a beer at the river.

It is fun watching from my balcony how Finns practice social distancing. Finland already has one of the largest personal comfort distances in the world. Now people chat 4 meters away from each other. 😹

One of my housemates has a persistent cough. We're all in lockdown as a precaution. Is it still OK to go for a brief walk in a remote path near my house at like midnight? Or should I just stay in 100% for all 2 weeks? Obviously don't wanna be an asshole who makes things worse, just wanna know if that's acceptable or not.

In The Netherlands the government just pushed an emergency message to all phones. Telling people to keep distance. A strict reminder because people aren't listening. They're still visiting parks and beaches for example.
This might be the final warning for people to follow the rules, before full lockdown is ordered.

Since the weather is consistently nice for the first time in weeks, people are really taking advantage in Amsterdam this weekend. Can't say it felt less busy than usual when I went for groceries.

Wow, even with the massive death toll some Italian mayors think the real numbers are much higher.
Provincial mayors are sounding an alarm that the virus-related toll fails to reflect a spike in deaths in the general population among those who have not been tested. Last week alone, 400 people died in Bergamo and 12 neighboring towns — four times the number who died the same week the previous year, according to the Bergamo mayor's office. Only 91 of those had tested positive for the virus.
In the epidemic's fourth week, Lorini estimates that the true number of infected in the area is 5 to 10 times the official figure of 4,645. The current regimen allows testing only of people who show up at a screening area at the hospital with severe symptoms, missing people who are sick at home.

WTF @ numbers dead
This will eclipse italy numbers soon!
That's implying Italian numbers aren't going to skyrocket in the coming week, which they probably will. Though yeah, everything seems to point out Spain is gonna have it worse than Italy... until the US begins to rise up higher.

If people keep the necessary distance it's totally fine to be outside for a bike ride or a walk/jog.
As long as you do not group up it should be fine.

If they are telling you to stay home, stay home.

My girlfriend is a pharmacist manager and says it's back ordered and that she's having to turn away physicians who are prescribing this for themselves, their families, or their patients - it seems a lot of people suddenly have rheumatoid arthritis or SLS... if she filled those prescriptions, several of her patients with RA would be going without refills, and they still may if it remains backordered.
Wonderful :(

If they are telling you to stay home, stay home.
And if they tell me going outside for sports is fine, then I can do that.
It's also good practice to keep yourself healthy. Just staying inside can lead to other health problems as well.

(Note: I was under chemotherapy last year for roughly 4 months and was still allowed to go outside as long as I avoided large crowds to not catch any illnes, and was actually encouraged since it's just better for your overall health.)

Right now I am in a hospital since I got my tumour removed from my ankle so I will be forced to be home in any case for the next few weeks. Still. I will probably try to get some walks (on crutches) in if I can.

But wet markets are the highest risk places for such viral mutation and development? If the first patient was around November, in the same area as the wet market in question, then that still makes it a likely origin point, no? I guess perhaps we'd see more infections at the market sooner, is what you're saying?
SARS-1 started at a wet market selling wildlife and everyone said these markets should be closed immediately, but corruption kept them open. Now SARS-2 very likely started at a wet market selling wildlife, and corruption silenced the first whistleblowers, allowing it to spread to the rest of the world. I have a very, very hard time believing any government official saying maybe it actually didn't start at the wet market and really these markets are not a problem.

Cuban doctors head to Italy to battle coronavirus

Communist-run Cuba said it dispatched a brigade of doctors and nurses to Italy for the first time this weekend to help in the fight against the novel coronavirus at the request of the worst-affected region Lombardy.

I hope that was voluntary on doctors part as the photo seems a bit too propagandistic. Either way, Italy needs all the help it can get.

I know this sounds a bit petty, but I wish Biden commented on that story somehow considering he criticised Cuba for the most benign stuff before or rather Bernie's comment on Cuba's literacy.

Portuguese numbers:
- 1600 infected (+320)
- 14 dead (+2)
- 5 recovered (same as yesterday)

Though the number of infected keeps growing, based on the last few days the growth seems to be deaccelerating and stabilizing (today's number is once again a 25% rise).

You can still practice social distancing while getting some air or walking your dog, don't be ridiculous.

They're literally telling you "stay home" "please stay home" "god, people stay at your fucking home".
And now you just want to go out for a fresh air or walking your dog? This is really ridiculous. It's not an ordinary situation, you must change your behavior.

I think you need to take a break from this thread or something. Going out for a walk is not a terrible idea. Hell, our governor (Ohio) encouraged us to go visit our state parks the other day, and he's one of the few that actually took this seriously and made decisive action from the very beginning.

Both prime ministers of Canada and Quebec have been clear that we can enjoy a walk as long as you're with members of your household, and of course to keep a distance with everyone else. No group walks. My wife, kid and I have been doing daily walks since the beginning. Of course, if one of us ever shows symptoms, all of us are stopping the walks. I wouldnt want to endanger others.

They tell you, at least in Germany, stay home, except for specific reasons.
In Bavaria those reasons actually include:
- Sports and exercise outside as long as you do it alone (or with people of the same household) and not in groups.
- Walking your dog is totally fine. Dogs need to go outside.

People saying "it's OK to go outside for a walk" better make the most out of them walks and fresh air because you're gonna miss them when you're actually forced to stay home because people keep "going out for walks".

Over 350 people dead EVERY DAY here, don't forget that.

I'm sorry, I have a bit of a cough. I'm sure many other people do as well. I go outside shortly because my toddlers are bouncing off the walls, and try to keep a distance and stifle my cough all through being outside. But if I'm shedding, then this virus has a tendency to stay active for a full day. And at least I'm super conscious of my condition, I see groups going out for a run, passing by elderly thinking this is a good time for a long walk outside, and of course children everywhere who don't know how to socially distance themselves. There's nothing healthy about any of this activity. If you can stay indoors because you are not a toddler, you most definitely should.

I know this sounds a bit petty, but I wish Biden commented on that story somehow considering he criticised Cuba for the most benign stuff before or rather Bernie's comment on Cuba's literacy.

Dems are seemingly fully committed to their base tribal impulses after promising a little bit of daylight during the obama years, so I wouldn't expect much from Joe.

Meanwhile, Cuba has quietly been a leader throughout this entire pandemic as they are saving lives and exporting medicine, knowledge, and bodies from the island. From last week:
peoplesdispatch.org

Cuba leads global efforts against COVID-19 in spite of blockade : Peoples Dispatch

Countries from across the globe have asked Cuba for the Interferon Alpha 2B, a drug developed in Cuba proven to be an effective against COVID-19
A Cuban drug, known as the Interferon Alpha 2B, could save thousands of lives in the COVID-19 pandemic. The drug has been produced in China since January 25 and, so far, has managed to effectively cure more than 1,500 patients from the coronavirus. It is one of 30 drugs chosen by the Chinese National Health Commission to combat the respiratory disease.

The recombinant human interferon alpha-2b was first developed in 1986 by a team of researchers from the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) and has benefited thousands of Cuban patients since its introduction into the national health system. It is marketed as Heberon® Alfa R. It has been used as a treatment for HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, Herpes zoster or Shingles, Dengue and different types of cancers. The medication increases the natural production of interferon in the human body and strengthens the immune system of patients, thus, is effective in treating the coronavirus disease.
The drug, developed in Cuba, is produced in China at the Changchun Heber Biological Technology, located in Jilin province, in a joint venture as part of an agreement between the two socialist countries in biotechnology.

It has prevented thousands of deaths in South Korea. Out of the 8,000 infected peoples, only 72 died. Germany has also bought these antivirals from the ChangHeber to fight the pandemic. Out of the 3,156 infected people, only 3 died.

After the effectiveness of the Cuban drug was known and popularized, the country has been flooded with purchase orders for Interferon Alpha 2B from across the globe. Several Latin American, Caribbean and European countries have requested medical aid from Cuba in order to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

In a press conference on March 14, the president of the pharmaceutical company BioCubaFarma group, Eduardo Martinez, indicated that the production of the drug is set to increase significantly after receiving requests from a large number of countries. Martinez assured that the CIGB has enough supplies to meet the needs of the international market, without putting at risk the amounts required by its own country.
The governments of Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, have also requested that Cuban authorities support them by sending medical personnel, adequate infrastructure and a plan to treat the people infected with coronavirus.

The drug is a proof of the power of Cuban biogenetic engineering and biotechnological advancements, which has forced the world to seek help from Cuba despite the US imposed commercial blockade against it.

Cuba has historically worked to help some of the world's poorest countries with medical assistance. Under a humanitarian medical mission, founded more than 55 years ago in the aftermath of the Cuban revolution led by Commander Fidel Castro, Cuba has provided almost-free healthcare services in over 160 countries across the globe.

But Cuba isn't capitalist. And it's full of brown people. So they'll never get their just dues.

Some people are definitely abusing the idea of getting some fresh air but on the other hand this whole thing needs to be sustainable long term. If this was a situation where staying in place for two weeks eradicates it completely, sure, but it isn't. We may have to live like this or similarly for a year.

These activities really depend on area and situation. In my neighborhood walking my dog or taking my son around the block couldn't be safer. I rarely encounter anyone and when I do see them we're far more than 6 feet away. I'm not touching anything at all. In some dense areas that's not so possible so it's hard saying no don't do that when it could be beyond perfectly fine to do so.

It is NOT fine. If someone infected cough, droplets carrying the virus can be suspended in the air for a while before they land on the ground or any surface, espescially when wind get involved. Walking your dog is a necessity, but walks and bike rides are not. Just stay home.

At the end, I guess the walks is depend on how the situation is in your country, some places have less cases so you can go for a walk. In Spain, you'll get fined if you're found out jogging, even alone. Just pray you don't get our (or Italy) numbers.

Yeah, if everyone thinks "it's okay, it's just a walk", we're back to square one. Stay home people. For once in your lives you can watch Netflix, play videogames and sleep a lot to save the world. Use this opportunity, and don't play social magnets right now.

I was thinking about those hilarious photos of Finns waiting at bus stops and how they'd probably come out of this pandemic with the best record. By this time next week they'll probably be using megaphones to communicate lol.

I am just listening to the Podcast by Dr. Drosten (the German virologist) and he actually says it's totally fine to go outside for a walk, jog or bike ride. It's not dangerous.
He mentions it's actually important to do sports, not just for your physical health, but also for your mental health.

It really depends on the country by country rules. Some allow you to walk alone or with the people you leave together, some are totally forbidding any kind of "leisure", you should get outside only if strictly needed. So don't act like this. Just because your country still allows it doesn't make you more right.

You are not allowed BY LAW to 'go for a walk' here. So yeah, highly supported.
In Austria we are explicitly allowed to go for walks, but only alone or with members of your own household and obviously pets.
Groups greater than 5 will be disbanded by the police.
