they're still not testing anyone that hasn't come in contact with a traveller or an infected person, even if they have symptoms.

This is categorically false. I know for a fact they have stopped testing just travelers and ARE testing people with mild flu like symptoms which is considered a fever. I have seen the hospital emails.

Wait, why is the peak expected in 4 to 6 for countries/states in lockdown ? This is because of incubation period + progressive symptoms ? Still seems damn long.

I said if they're in contact with travellers. You need to learn to read.

This does nothing for ppl with symptoms that may have picked it up via community spread.

Testing is very limited here. It's on the assessment website ffs.

If you are feeling unwell with any of the following symptoms:
  • Fever, new cough or difficulty breathing (or a combination of these symptoms)?
  • Muscle aches, fatigue, headache, sore throat, runny nose or diarrhea? Symptoms in young children may also be non-specific (for example, lethargy, poor feeding).
And have experienced any of the following:
  • Have you travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days?
  • Does someone you are in close contact with have COVID-19 (for example, someone in your household or workplace)?
  • Are you in close contact with a person who is sick with respiratory symptoms (for example, fever, cough or difficulty breathing) who recently travelled outside of Canada?

All bars/nightclubs closed in Florida for the next 30 days. In effect after tonight so you know some folks are going to get smash tonight.

Restaurants still open but only half capacity for now.

For Ontario testing, it might depend on your doctor/hospital. I know the one near me, North York General, will test anyone with any flu symptoms for COVID-19, even if you haven't travelled or been in close contact with a positive case.

In all seriousness - how long will Americans need to be practicing social distancing? Until June?

I think it will be a gradual return back.

I work in QA for a major retailer and we work with a lot of chinese labs that work with chinese factories. China went from being completely shut down with an extended Chinese New Year, to being limited to local only areas. They are now being gradually brought back up to speed. The interesting thing is that we have inspectors able to go into china factories right now but we have restrictions for other countries.

So China is looking like it's about to stabilize and get back to normal. Roughly 3 months time. While they had the worst outbreak of all, they also had very intense measures to contain and mitigate it. No idea how it will progress in the US. I think we will still be seeing cases in the summer but I am hoping new cases are so infrequent that the healthcare system can easily handle it and they lift the ban on gatherings.

I had an overdue oil change (and 3 recalls) scheduled to get done today in Pennsylvania that I fully expected to be cancelled. Called in to check and they said they are open so I'm here now. There are definitely more than 10 people in the waiting room/showroom. I'm hunkering down in a corner hoping to not catch anything. I wanted to wipe down the table I'm sitting at but there aren't any disinfectants here and I don't even see any hand sanitizer. I'm a little concerned but it had to be done, and I figure eventually they may shut places like this and I can't afford to have something bad happen to my car due to bad oil or recalls.

We may be doing it in some capacity until a vaccine is available in like 18 months.
Yeah, with the peak apparently expected to happen in July / August now, I don't see how social distancing and lockdowns could get dialed back before September or October at the earliest? And even then, we might get hit by another wave.

Spain is set to put to use up to 200 billion € (20% of Spain's GPD) to fight the economic repercussions of the virus on companies and individuals.

117 Billion € from the government, and the rest from private sources.

All William Osler is also testing flu like symptoms. Etobicoke, Brampton and Peel Clinic.

Governor of VA just said they want everyone in the state to follow the 10 rule. Yet my company who employees over 15,000 trades workers to work in small areas on Ships are still requiring people to work or use PTO.

I can assure you their attention will be held in the upcoming months.

I'm not happy about it.

November is a long time from now.

There's absolutely no telling how voters look at Trump in regard to this crisis in November. That will fully depend on how it impacts the country over the next couple/few months.

Just don't assume this is going to do him in.

I don't know how that's sustainable. I get the importance of it, but unless something seriously changes policy wise (hint: UBI, healthcare, etc.) I just can't see how even though it's needed, people will actually adhere to it. Not everyone can work from home.

I assume nothing will do him in at this point. I mean just about everything that happened before 2016 should have done him in.

The fact that Joe Biden is pretty much going to win the primary already has me pretty sure that Trump is going to win again. I'll still vote for Biden if (when) he wins the primary, but I am not optimistic.

Coronavirus: Avoid taking ibuprofen for Covid-19 symptoms, says WHO

GENEVA (AFP) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended on Tuesday (March 17) that people suffering from Covid-19-like symptoms should avoid self-medicating with ibuprofen, after French authorities warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen the effects of the virus. Read more at...

Interesting.

First the French Health Minister said to avoid ibuprofen.
Then Spain and Germany denied it and said it was false.

Now it seems, for now, the WHO is saying

"In the meantime, we recommend using paracetamol, and do not use ibuprofen as a self-medication. That's important," he said.

He stressed though that if ibuprofen had been "prescribed by the healthcare professionals, then, of course, that's up to them".

WHO confirms two coronavirus cases among its staff

An official from the World Health Organization, the body leading the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic, said on Tuesday that two staff members have been confirmed to be infected with coronavirus.
It's a really dangerous job, it's sadly not unheard of for WHO staff to die in the line of duty.
I hope they get well.

Listen, I'm not saying everyone is going to change their minds, but I will tell you this much.

Older people especially, WILL likely have dead friends and spouses. The biggest voting bloc Trump has is going to get absolutely wrecked. I'm not happy about this at all, I have loved ones that I'm really worried about. But November is not far enough out for what is going to happen here. I could be wrong, but it will be a miracle.

This is going to change things forever.

1 death in the Muskoka, Ontario area apparently. they just announced over the news. Don't have a link yet.

Here's a news story reporting on it. Not confirmed yet.

www.nationalobserver.com

Ontario's first presumptive COVID-19 death reported in Muskoka

The person who died was a 77-year-old man in Muskoka. If confirmed, the death would be Ontario's first caused by the novel coronavirus.

Edit so I don't triple post:

Uber stopping all pooled rides in Canada and the US.

I would caution anyone against setting expectations relative to China. Their ability to basically lock down the country, force people to stay home, constantly monitor people that needed to go out, and test broadly accelerated their pending recovery in ways that the west just can't emulate.

Taking peoples' temperature at basically every entrance into public transportation and businesses and then quarantining those people with fevers for weeks in specialized clinics would be extraordinarily difficult to do for most countries.

Don't panic but set realistic expectations relative to your local societal context.
