I wonder how long it will be before the mask makers can keep up with the demand? It seems that in Korea, regular citizens are able to purchase them without much trouble. I haven't seen any in my city since January.
It doesn't make sense for a for profit company to ramp up their production 100 fold, because those machines will be idle once the pandemic is over, and they're making good money anyway now.
The US government can just stand up production lines for those things, it doesn't require some sort of super advanced machinery.
That's what Taiwan did.
But sadly, we have people who believe the free market will solve anything.

Things were already eerily quiet here in the Seattle area but now it feels like shit just got real. Streets are pretty empty but the few cars out are driving like they're Mad Max. I saw one woman in a makeshift (read: useless) biohazard suit. People are getting scared and when people get scared, they get stupid (more than normal). If you're out make sure to keep your chill and don't get yourself shot over a box of pasta

I was able to drive home during rush hour yesterday and hit barely any traffic. It was deeply eerie.

What is getting me really worried:

- recovery outside of China is ridiculous.... many people with mild symptons will move to critical soon or later...
death rate in Iran, France, Spain and Itally is really high so maybe some etnies have a worse way to deal with the virus?

Fuck, this will hit Sweden very soon, and my bank card is currently dead. Have food for a few days only, still waiting on the new card to arrive. Hopefully it will be soon.

There were things missing from some stores today, and the subway was rather empty.

I'd probably hit the bike or work from home for the next while if I were you (I'm assuming Stockholm)

This is probably going to be the norm for the rest of the campaign. Can't have the geriatric guy whose entire hopes of defeating Trump we're putting into getting corona.

With this, I can agree.
Wet markets in China need to be permanently banned and heavily penalized. If there is a country that can do it, it is China.

Wet markets are not gonna be closed (at lest the kind that is common across China and the rest of Asia)
Most don't carry anything exotic, normal produce you can find in the supermarket.
There will be changes probably as you still can find live seafood (i don't think that is a problem) and live poultry. (those might get banned, maybe slaughtered outside the premise)

The wildlife shit? ban them to oblivion i hope. It's time that Chinese learn to take Viagra pills for the erections problem.

After that it's basically become like farmer market that sell meat.

My chem final is now optional and if you don't choose to take it you'll just get your grade based on the two midterms. Basically 2/3 tests will be accounted for. I guess I'll check take it. Why the hell not? If I score worse no harm done.

Hmm, I have a few "non-essential" doctor/dentist appointments coming up this month. I'm in an area that hasn't reported any cases yet but wondering if I should reschedule them for a future time.

It begins.

SEAN HANNITY: Gateway Pundit points out that as of yesterday that the President's approval rating is fine and he's getting pretty good grades on everything else. There's an MIT guy I noticed on Twitter, and you know he's saying pretty much the same thing he does research nearly every single day on immune systems he said quote "coronavirus fear-mongering by the Deep State will go down in history as one of the biggest frauds to manipulate economies, suppress dissent, and push mandated medicines." May be true.

Day two of working from home and most people are not a fan..

But I managed to squeeze in a 20 minute Peloton ride in the middle of the day and plan to workout around 4PM so I'm adapting well. Plus I'm doing some Destiny 2 grinding between tasks.

Dentist is not part of the capacity that's responding to Corona though right?

Finally got a district email for the school system I work for in CT:
  • Winter sports are done, the state cancelled all tournaments
  • All field trips cancelled
  • Reviewing all potential large gatherings to determine how to handle that
  • Potential 2-week school closure. Would have to make up the days at the end of the school year. Planning optional learning activities that students could access.
  • Potential longer than 2-week school closure. Possible waiver to avoid the mandated 180 days of school required. Considering online learning and determining prioritizing what needs to be done by the end of the week.
Granted, some other districts have cancelled school for a day or are doing delayed openings to allow staff to plan lessons for these possibilities.

All in all, it sounds like we're getting school closures sooner rather than later.

China is the only major functional manufacturer for medical supplies left on this planet now. In other words, they have all the cards. Their market is also critical for the resuscitation of economy in the future should the pandemic keeps spreading. Let's cut the racist part and focusing on helping each other out, otherwise we will have the 2008 depression all over again.

Also, did I mention that on Chinese social networks people are suspecting that U.S. is the source of the virus now? It's not looking good.

I feel like I'm reading about another restaurant or business closing on my FB feed about every 20-30 minutes.

This is going to devastate a ton of people.

I'm going to be sad if a lot of local places around me close. Small business places have the best foods. Chains will always be ok due to them being in a corporation, but there's so much good Asian food around here....

Best case scenario is that some fold temporarily. Somehow, something will give if there's no business to pay rent/leases on a lot of locations. That's another problem that should be put in place, like how some countries will halting mortgages during all this.

fucking wild.

My employer in Germany (call center) asked us today if we could imagine working from home. I would never have thought they would even consider this just 2 days ago. But I don't know how this should work with security, we have several high-security clients and they just asked us if we have good broadband and a laptop/PC.
I know from other projects that you need the following for high-sec wfh:
- a separate room in the house that could be locked and you are the only one with a key
- either a (basically) malware installed on your own PC that logs what you are doing on the device or getting a company laptop
- a technician who will check your room and will set up your workplace at home

And here they just asked if we had broadband and a PC.

I have a not very bright acquaintance saying the coronavirus is less grave than the flu, is there a good resource that compares the mortality rates so far?

The normal flu is widely regarded to be around 0.1% fatal.

COVID-19 is "estimated" to be somewhere between 1.0-3.0% fatal. We don't (and won't) know the final # until all the cases are tallied.

But likely 10-30x as fatal (though still not a threat to kill everyone, as it's mostly older individuals who end up dying).
