Question about the first main boss, but also a general tactic question

How do you avoid the "wide swing" of the bosses without getting hit? Perfect dodge timing

Seems when I dodge to the side I still get swiped. Dodging into the boss works well, but then I run out of Ki and am vulnerable to melee.

Dodging away I get hit every time.

Any tips would be helpful.

Coming from FS games made me try to dodge everything, which resulted in many times getting hit. If you try to block some of those hard ones, instead of dodging them, and improve in stamina management, it probably going to save you some pain.

I definitely had to learn with the first Nioh that blocking is like way way better than in the souls games.

Game is definitely very punishing in regards to damage taken from hits. I got killed in 2 hits from full health by a normal mob soldier on the second stage in the purple wooded area. This was more a side mission level and it said it's level 4 area and I was level 8 but still can die easily in two hits by some enemies.

Armor helps more than levelling stats. Get in the habit of switching armors and don't even think about set bonuses yet; they get replaced so fast. If you're worried that you might look weird with different armor pieces, you can always go to the Smith to refashion each piece to whatever you want them to look like (pretty cheap to do so).

I've put around 25 hours in Nioh 2 so far since having it from Wednesday so I think I'm qualified enough to make a comparison. The absolute difference between the two is how difficultly is defined. In Sekiro difficulty is very much skill related whereas Nioh 2 has a plethora of artificial difficulty modifiers such as bad camera work, burst counters not registering and really questionable (read: pointless) AI. Good luck if you fight one of the jumping axe Yokai in an interior of a building.

I'm not saying Sekiro doesn't feature some of this, but it's far, far more polished and ultimately rewarding.
After having put more time in Nioh 2, I can attest to everything you're saying. What shocked me most honestly was the contrast between the two games when it comes to how polish they are. Nioh 2 almost doesnt feel like a sequel from the lack of it.

Thanks! Though blocking hurts Ki, is it expected to only get in 1-2 hits after blocking?

Edit: I see danhz answered my question already :-)

thanks all!

Also there are weight limit breaks point at 30% and 70%. Over 30% puts you in to B agility which doesn't feel like a big difference but lets you get armor with a lot more toughness which really helps improve your ability to block, and general bulk.

No shit? What do you get back?
You can get different soul cores back, I also got a kodama soul core which I think might be unique to that.

Oh shit, time to start keeping some of those trash cores. Thank you!

In coop, is there a way to regain lost blue bar?

In the first game, resting at a prayer shrine would restore the assist gauge. (But only the first time you rested there, after, you'd need to seek a new one).
This doesn't seem to work anymore. I read somewhere that dispelling Yokai Realm darkness zones would do it, but if so, I haven't noticed any substantial gains yet.

Ooh good tip! Works well. Thank you!

The point of the burst counter is to deal high amounts of ki damage as well as stagger the boss, the permanent damage you deal to the bosses ki gauge is far more useful than the 2-3 standard hits you can land in that timeframe.

Well for this boss, you need to control the when he would switch to dark realm. If you focus to much on using burst counter on every opportunity, you may end up facing him and 2 snakes in the dark realm, which is not good. I found that by hitting him normally, i would have enough time to kill the 02 snakes at the same time before he ran out of ki and deal a lot more damages to his health.

Anyone else feel like sometimes enemies are inconsistent? By that I mean you can encounter the same enemy twice (both outside the dark zone) and one can be significantly harder than the other.

Maybe it's just me.

Alright. I completed all of the main/side/twilight missions of the first zone... I think I'm ready for the second area. Or level 40 too low?

Does anyone know how sorting works? I can't figure out how it decides when I choose "Sort by Type".

EDIT: oh, Hammers count as Axes, that's why

The burst counter is a goddamn rad mechanic. Feels so good when you stuff a bosses big attack.

Eagle Eye Scroll is soooooooooo busted. I did 6k to a big enemy (one that dispels the Dark realm) with 3 arrows.

I admit I have no idea what is going on story wise, same for Nioh 1

Yea I'm trying to finish a replay of Nioh 1 currently before diving into the sequel fully, but the story is kind of a mess.

Nioh 1 is basically a big race for varying world factions to seek out Amrita crystals(not well described given you absorb tons of it from killed enemies...) but I guess England really wants sone specific master crystal or whatever to win wars.

So William(pirate merc I think?) is hired to search it out and happens upon a spirit that can lead him to Amrita, but she is kidnapped by the villain Kelly(tattoo mage) and flees to Japan. You escape a London prison(unexplained why you are there and why the spirit chose you), go on a rescue mission, and spend 50+ hours chasing tattoo guy across feudal Japan. You meet and fight the cast of Samurai Warriors as history and fantasy merge with Yokai infecting the country and William just kind of does favors for all the warlords as you keep on the trail.

It's poorly told, often nonsensical, and mostly confusing. But it doesn't matter. You slay and upgrade. That's the real story. :)

4th map first boss
Surprisingly easy considering what it is. Suffers from big boss syndrome though where "here's a weak part on my body" but he just turn around super fast making it pointless to attack anything but it's belly. Dual Blades God Wind is far, far too good lmao.

Man, I really want to pick up this game, but there's just too much coming out in the meantime. Maybe June. : (

I hope it does well. I prefer the system to Dark Souls.

Anyone else having issues with the items set to your quick use buttons taking 2 or 3 presses before they actually use? It's happening consistently for me now during boss fights where I have to hit up for medicine three times before it actually uses it.

Having played Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge recently, I have a pretty good idea of how bad a Team Ninja story can be when they decide to put an emphasis on it. By comparison, Nioh's incoherent Demonic Sengoku Murder Tour is at least light enough that I don't need to pay attention beyond "Oh cool that's Nobunaga, I guess."

I died to the first Karasu Tengu you encounter in the main missions about 20 times. I couldn't figure it out and basically would go down after three hits. You fight it on a ledge so there is limited room to manuever and watch the thing's moves. I summoned someone and he killed it for me fairly quickly but I couldn't see what he was doing differently. I guess he was just doing more damage. The rest of that mission was fairly easy though (summoned guy died early in the fight with the one-eyed oni), even the boss, which I finished on one try.

Does anyone know if it's possible to translate the demon language in-game? I'm genuinely curious at what they're saying, especially the purple Kodama.

For burst counters do they guarantee permanent ki drain and a stun for triangle attack upon successful execution ? Including bosses and normal enemies? What if I get hit too at the same time as executing burst counter does that still count?

Secondly, I killed Gozuki in the first mission but I died at the same time as I got the killing blow. I went back to the area he was in and only found a key. Did he not drop any loot? Have I lost his soul core or something by dying?

How important is familarity on a weapon? If I find a better weapon with better stats but no familarity should I then switch to that, or keep using the one with more familarity?

It increases the max atk of the weapon and that's about it I think.

You can use whetstones to increase familiarity too.

I always switch if I find a better weapon, or until I find one good enough that I can soul match afterwards and keep using.

Ok cool thanks. I played the first Nioh but have forgotten about all the mechanics.

I really should be playing this, as I loved Nioh. But I just have too many games to play at the moment, so I'll wait for the PC version. I also retired my shitty, noisy PS4 Pro that I played Nioh on, so I'm not too hot on playing a fast paced action game on my PS4 Amateur (It's fine for 30 fps-ish cinematic games and RPGs).

Familiarity increases the weapons attack and, when maxed, you may see a skill with a |>| icon. Those skills can be transfered to another weapon when soul matched (though it's only important in NG+ and beyond if you go for specific build) same apply to green quality armors/weapons in NG+.

Of course, you'll often find better weapons that have more atk with 0 familiarity than weapons with max familiarity.

Can confirm the Sudama/Soul Core thing. I have my highest level Enki core at rank 9, so the very first Sudama I found in the game, I offered it up a lower level dupe Enki Soul Core and got a level 12 Kodama Soul Core in exchange. Now I have a Kodama chilling in my hut whenever I visit or start up an Expedition. It'll do until a Scampus finally decides to drop a fucking Soul Core for me. Want my hut to be inhabited by a fat demon kitty instead of a Kodama or Guardian Spirit. Like I had in the trial from a week or two back.

Really enjoying this so far, even if it's suuuuper iterative on the first game. I will say that so far the bosses in the second region are much easier than the ones in the first region. That damn snake is the only boss that's taken me more than an hour so far.
