I don't understand why everyone is so keen to move BOTW to 2021. Seems like you all wish it would come later (don't get me started in the 2022 crowd). I think it could come in holidays 2020 and it seems like a normal expectation. A year and a half after the announcement, with the engine already done, and the main story fleshed out, seems more than enough even after covid-19. Maaybe they could do March 2021, you never know, but some people seem to want to wait.

IMHO Nintendo doesn't really have anything else that can compete with Sony and Xbox. I don't think Mario remasters are enough, sadly. And they have been disclosed already which makes it less exciting than if it was something out of the blue.

With everything that we know they could announce BOTW2 for November next week.

Trusted insiders have told us not to expect it for this year.

Also, Nintendo doesn't need anything to compete with next gen launches. I've never understood that argument.

agreed. i still believe it's this year.

Hmmm I remember it looking alright in the Direct last year but I may have misremembered it lol - that clip looks like its on a shoestring budget.
well, it IS a low budget game. believe it or not it looks a lot better than the original.

If anything it's the new consoles that need big guns to compete with the record breaking hardware that's currently selling out everywhere, not the opposite.

Nah, Zelda next year as the peak for the series 35th anniversary makes more sense. And i say this as someone who was in team 2020 for a long time.

Honestly, even those don't need anything big for 2020 and early 2021. They sell out on hype alone. No one really needs anything special this holiday season. ^^

If they delay BOTW2 to holidays 2021 but release WWHD and Twilight Princess during the year I wouldn't be mad. It's exciting to think the things they could add to it with a year more. But I'm still team 2020!

The new consoles don't need much either to compete with "record breaking hardware" lol. They'll sell off hype alone so there's no point there either.

Grabbed the Labo VR kit, kind of excited to try it out, I imagine I'll just use it for 5 minutes in BOTW but still

Ehhhh expensive consoles launching in a recession need a lot more help than a cheaper console with a massive library already breaking records.

Not that I think next gen consoles won't do great numbers at launch, but I just don't think it's gonna be anything Nintendo has to really worry about.

There's a component of hype as well. Even if the new generation doesn't sell much Nintendo wouldn't want Sony and Xbox getting all the press from September to December. You still need to announce something exciting to get the headlines.

Nintendo could release no new games the rest of the year and the Switch would still sell like mad.

I mean, even without new consoles launching they will want big games for the holiday season like they want every single year. Nothing about consoles launching changes that.

I expect we'll get a few other big games outside of just the Mario remasters/ports/whatevers. But probably not BOTW2 sadly.

I really really think they don't give a shit. Sony and Xbox will get the headlines but Nintendo will still sell more MK8 than anything comes christmas.

If I remember correctly no one knew that Botw 2 was gong to be in last years direct. Zelda is a property that Nintendo holds a little bit closer.

Man I'm craving Nintendo news like a mf this week, but I still doubt we'll get anything new besides potentially a Smash announcement

We'll disagree. I don't see this major impact when hype will be through the roof for next gen. It's not like there will be crazy stock for Xbox and PS5. Plus, Microsoft is giving consumers the ability to do monthly plans instead of paying it all off at once. I see all 3 companies doing fine.

Is a Let's Go Johto a realistic game? That could be a big hitter for the holidays, I think it would sell more than the DP remakes due to nostalgia.

I don't think anybody wants BotW2 to come in 2021 - quite a few of us thought it had a good shot at being 2020's big title. But that was before Covid-19 and before insiders said Zelda isn't coming this year.

Nintendo won't concern themselves with something 'big' purely to compete with next-gen machines which will be targeting a particular slice of the market (hardcore, early adopters willing to drop £500 plus for a console and games), while Nintendo will be targeting a different, wider market. They'll have something big for later this year because they always do - October through December is their major sales period, after all.

I think if this was happening, we wouldn't have two expansions for Sword/Shield coming. I think the expansion pass pretty much rules out a main-series Pokemon title - combined, the expansions are probably the equivalent of a 'third version'. It wouldn't surprise me to see a Let's Go Gen 2 at some point, though I don't know if it'd outsell gen 4 remakes.

Question is: do we get a Pokemon spin-off, instead? Detective Pikachu Switch? Pokken 2?

That's good news. They'll have more time for the next gen then!

Detective Pikachu would be cool.

Hey, I've been pretty disconnected from the thread these last months.
Has there been any rumors suggesting any kind of information from Nintendo in the following days or weeks, or will they be silent during the "E3"?

I think there has to be a little bit more, looking at the release schedule on the Japanese website, the only first party games with a confirmed release date are the new Paper Mario and Famicom Tantei Club.

Belatedly: I'm glad I'm not alone on the whole amiibo thing. RIP. Here's hoping for a renamiiibossance.

Maybe it'll be announced in today's E3 Direct!

They're announcing and releasing the next Smash fighter in June, so we're sure to hear something.

Other than that it's currently unknown but I expect we'll also get an August game announced (Pikmin 3 probably), and maybe some more info on Paper Mario.

I'm in a good amiibo spot. I have a ton of my favorite characters and would be totally satisfied if they stopped making them...after the smash DLC. I want a banjo amiibo.

No one wants to wait longer, I think it's more just being realistic with everything going on in the world right now. But even moreso, understanding the usual Zelda announcement to release cycles. Yes, it could come out this year, and they could announce that any day, and that'd be fucking awesome! Most people just aren't expecting that.

I'm in this boat as well. I own every amiibo so far (even the cereal box, even the Monster Hunter Stories ones, even Qbby) but despite enjoying this collectathon, I think it's time to pull the plug. ONLY AFTER the Smash DLC amiibos, because A. it would suck to have an incomplete Smash collection if they stopped producing them B. Give me Banjo you cowards

The next Smash fighter could easily be the end of the month, sure. Club House/51 Worldwide Classics at the start of the month, Isle of Armor mid-June, Smash Fighter late June.

Though equally, Nintendo sometimes don't give a hoot about the pace of their releases (I'm looking at you, the six or seven Switch games Nintendo decided to publish between August 30th and October 31st 2019).

Think they just prefer to release more in the back half of the year, although ultimate alliance 3 and three houses coming out a week apart was a bit weird

They also published Dragon Quest Builders 2 that month, and Mario Maker 2 right at the end of June, so 4 games in a month in EU/NA. And that after a fairly quiet first half at retail. Shouldn't complain, though - it was a great run of games.

Well tbf they probably didn't decide on the release of Builders they just published it, but yeah I never got around to ultimate alliance because too much stuff was coming out.

I lowkey agree with you but I've convinced myself it was absolutely moved to 2021 because my heart can't handle it being the 2020 holiday game.
